  1. As Lethys has mentioned, R&D is all about focusing on game mechanics, how to get the max output out of anything, whether it be ship design, scripting the ship and so on.

Why R&D is needed, first of all DU is a MMO game, while you will find solo players you won't find players who are the best at ship building or fighting or flying or trading all at the same time, its about how the community gets together to create something. So lets keep TU as an example, TU will need a R&D org so that the people in TU who want to build ships or script or something get the opportunity to come together, create together and make something that they can be proud of, get on some new ideas and stuff like that. Now people who don't want to build ships don't have to as the ships are being built by the R&D dept. Its not just about R&D but any other field of interest like trading, exploration, military all essential for any org out there.

When we talk about innovation, creating new ships, finding new ways to do things, I think the game structure basically endorses that, orgs might want do things differently, what may work for a 10 man org may not for a 100 man org so they need to find different ways to do different things.
As far as paying people goes, well some orgs will pay some may not, how an organisation works is entirely upto them so yea.

As far as protecting property goes, lets say Blueprints of a ship, now there are two kinds of blueprints. Master Blueprint and Copy Blueprint, a Master Blueprint is owned by the person or the org who made the ship, using a master blueprint you can break apart the ship to see whats going where and then there is a copy blueprint which doesn't tell you how a ship is build and you can sell a copy blueprint on the market so you can protect your design, though keep in mind scripts installed on a ship can not be kept hidden.

Or maybe you say own a ship already, now a ship has a control unit, and the beauty of RDMS comes here is that till the time the control unit is yours the ship is yours but if one hacks the control unit or replaces it with his own well bye bye ship.

Same with territories, there is a territory control unit which needs to be placed to mark the territory as yours and well if you have read about it a bit then territories come in shape of hexagons(am not sure about the dimensions yet), so one needs to replace your TCU(or maybe hack?) to steal your territory, I think devs also said that TCUs placement and all takes about a day so you have plenty time to defend your area.

But hey, what about your containers or stuff? well using RDMS you can define who has access to those containers which may hold your goods and all so that is that. but keep in mind that nothing is completely safe so yea.

    Happy Gaming ;) xD

  2. Also, try to make it colorblind friendly...or at least add an option to switch to colorblind friendly for those out there that are...like me.  ;)   Ideas, use patterns or symbols with or instead of solid colors for certain functions.

A novel idea and definitely something the developers should think about.

  3. The simple fact is that there is no hardcore quest system like in normal MMO, a "quest" is formed via a contract system, for example I post a job on a local job board that I will trade 100 iron for 5 gold, you accept the job or "quest" so to speak, and then lets also say that you have to come to my location to trade the iron for gold, it is totally okay for someone to steal your iron while you are coming to my location, there is going to be no safety net for such job systems so the risk is definitely there which I think will make the game more immersive, atleast thats what I understand.

  4. As others have mentioned before, Alpha and Beta you will see a lot of going around, people testing all kinds of things, flying, building, mining and so many more things and based on how things turn out and the current interests of the org you will see different priorities for example SLI will work more on R&D. Terran Union is a nation org and thus it will have different interests and will probably try to do work in all the fields considering TU gets enough man power and if they don't have enough man power at the moment to work on different fields as they intend to do the work will probably be outsourced so as to get the nation up and running.

Though I would imagine infrastructure, defense and R&D would be three major factors when it comes to the initial development of TU.

Oh and also welcome to the forums :)

  5. I am quite interested in how this project turns out, while I would prefer a human leader myself, the power of an administrative AI can not be ignored and can help any org a lot in their procedures. I hope that with the system available to us in the game we can come up with some awesome and I would love to be part of this project :) though I am not a programmer so if you need any other kind of help :P

  6. Indeed, while orgs like Alpha Academy are there to help people, the main goal is till the end of beta, Alpha Academy has members of various different orgs coming together to test out the game but when release comes, they will put their and their group's interests first and so you can expect a lot of competition even on release with each org trying to get out of the planet, developing the fastest and gaining power before others.
While the goal of having players cooperate together, not fighting is good on paper, it is unrealistic and in my opinion quite boring. Political games, direct warfare, sabotage, espionage are quite a big factor in a game like DU and I think it will be as kurock put it "glorious".

  7. As others before me have mentioned that there is no limit to how many orgs you can join but its better to join orgs which you feel strong about and which supports the style of play you want, for example if you wanna be in a close brotherhood/family kind of group then Aether is a great choice, but lets say you want to be in a nation kind of group then you have many options like Terran Union and so on.
Basically find out which org suits your interests and find like-minded people, this way you will have an exciting game time with them, even the pre-alpha experience is different in different groups so its always cool to be in a group of like-minded people. :)
As Dhara mentioned, some orgs do not allow membership in other orgs so do take note of that.

  8. As lethys mentioned there are no npc's in the game and the limited npc interaction we will have in start will be to get the economy of the game going, other than that I don't believe there will be any interaction with any sort of npc's in the game unless ofcourse NQ do a special event or something like this, who knows.

As far as you wanting to launch quests and stuff, its pretty much RP but I am sure you can hide little clues for players to make them go for something, it will be all meta but I don't see why it won't be fun. I would recommend people who are looking to do RP and I am sure if you find some like minded people you will have a much more fun game experience.

Still my best wishes to you and your goal of creating amazing quests for people :)

  9. From what I have gathered so far, when you purchase something you need to physically either pickup or deliver the product to the desired location. JC did mention in "From Barter to Economy" Dev blog about something like this. I also think the job board system will help in this regard as due to this we players can make our contracts and thus we can simply make a hauling contract.

This brings the question of security, we know that using RDMS system we can apply tags on the container so that only the owner may open it.

When you’ll buy a good on a market 1.000km away from where you stand, it will show up in a local inventory physically attached to that particular market container. So, you have to factor in the cost (in time) to get there and collect your good. This is extremely important as it will give birth to local markets in remote areas, which only purpose will be to save you the efforts of organizing the logistics of acquiring goods from afar. This service will translate into higher prices, as those who take the risk of convoying these goods for you have to maintain a sound logistic chain, protect the area, etc.
