  1. I have to agree, the only problem is, it's not very easy to balance these kinds of weapons. As soon as an organization gets their hands on one of them, it could mean they hold all the power in the game.

We can look at eve for this. Sure it gives them some power, but nothing that cant be delt with with a bunch of other ships. And eventually they become common and sometimes a liability.

You could make the same argument against the first person to make a gun vs a fist.

Remember it isnt just magically making it. It takes resources which is time and effort, as well as upkeep.

What materials are required per shot, or energy based, how much fuel? If NQ doesn't add in a DD equivalent weapon the players will try their hardest to created on within the game. Look at all the railgun designs in SE that were made when rockets were more likely to kill you over the enemy.

  2. I may just mention here that LUA was the first languages that I learned. I was only ~12 at the time and was able to write decent codes and my ~16 y/o brother was writing several ~50 page codes, so I don't think it's one of the harder languages. Not at least like C or C#, which is what I am using now.

Really? you didnt learn a language until 12? Most people learn at least one by the time they are 2-3. Some know 2-3 by the time they are 5.

  3. Welcome to the forums!

To clarify what @Lethys said, it will be possible to build a structure as large as the Deathstar, but it will not be possible for it to function like it does in the movies. In other words, weapons of that scale will not be possible in Dual Universe.

I do hope they dont limit it to tiny little weapons. Like avorion, you can have a ship thats 10km long, but your weapons still only have a range of 10k.

There needs to be something equlivant to the dooms day weapons in eve. not planet cracker, but fleet destroyers. They just come at an enormpus cost, both to build and operate.

  4. I would agree other than the issues of what has to be done with these extra cores. If you build to max with one core, add another core, and then add a bit more material, what happens when you try to move/remove the core? Can you not until the material drops below the single core limit again?

Yeah, shpuld be an easy check to do. Theres a few other games out there that do the same. Or at least raise a flag and make the ship inoperable

  5. So shitposting is allowed? Well I love Neapolitan. It has the 3 main flavours:

Vanilla for that glorious chocolate syrup.

Chocolate for it's rich infused flavour.

Strawberry for an exotic and fruity taste.

Blasphamy, we all know moosetracks is the best. Who doesnt like chocolate and peanutbutter chunks in their icescream Just dont go ruin it by putting nuts.

  6. I'm a programmer also fluid in lua. But I'm not sure about getting involved into Organizations before playing the game (or at least the Alpha). I think I will only know what community I want to be in, after I found my playstyle. Those two should match. I will keep your Organization in the back of my head though.

Nice to see I'm not the only one who feels this way. There are some groups with interesting concepts and goals, but I wont bother joining any for now. I figure I will start looking in Alpha, but likely wont join any group until beta to see the direction of both them and I go.

  7.

I know this is old, but people don't get what e=m(c^2) means. The equation means that for any given matter with mass, the energy contained within the mass(in kilograms) is equal to the mass multiplied by the speed of light(meters per second) squared. Some examples include:

"modifying the geometry of exotic matter could reduce the mass–energy requirements for a macroscopic space ship from the equivalent of the planet Jupiter to that of the Voyager 1 spacecraft (~700 kg)[7] or less" -From the Alcubierre Drive article on Wikipedia

This means that according to the latter estimate, it would take e= 700kg * c^2 = 6.3*10^19 joules of energy to power the Alcubierre Drive.

Another example is a hydrogen atom has a mass of 938.790 million electron-volts, which, rearranging the equation e = m(c^2) to e/(c^2) = m, gives us about 1.7*10^-27 kgs per hydrogen atom.

No, accelerating mass to the speed of light WILL NOT turn it into energy. accelerating mass to C would take an infinite amount of energy since relativistic effects go up exponentially as you get closer to the speed of light.

    ......

I think it would be nice to have a drill, not a big one, but a relatively small one that you can attach to a craft to make a drilling truck. They would be power-intensive and heavy so you can't attach like 50000 of them in one ship. Also, dynamite for blast mining would be cool too.

    ......

Personally, I think we need to focus more on space mining. A lot of sci-fi tends to focus a lot on planets, even though from a practical perspective, that is much less efficient since you have to travel in and out of large gravity wells which take a lot of energy. Besides, I imagine the largest ships will be assembled in orbit, so having the materials right next to the site in an asteroid would be more convenient. Also, by promoting space mining, it would open up planetary surfaces to other uses.

Agreed on all points. Well for 2 I wouldn't hard code a drill limit, just make it impractical and ineffecient to do so.

And yes, planet bases and planet living is overrated for a spacefairing species.

  8. Will each core have a building limit? Like you can't have more than 100m diameter to your ship?

Im sure someone has more specifics, but yes. It seems that each core size increases the side of the build. Not sure if its a block count, I recall it being a volume build space. Bigger cores have larger volumes.

Now we had a discussion recently regarding this. It was mentioned having unlimited build size. So is this done by having the largest core infinite in build size (seemed to be the suggested mrthod when first brought up last year), or can you tack on more cores to increase the size where needed. I dont know which, and I dont recally anyone having a confirmed answer.

  9. Even if they don't release automated Nano farmers or wait until way after game release to implement them! This is not a bad thing and would give new players a good chance to catch up with some of the more veteran players. Harvesting by characters only also forces Organizations to really work as a team when harvesting materials so they can build the biggest and best structures as a group! I am still not sure if there will be a character skill tree and if so what it might look like?

There are other trades geared towards skill training, but in short it seems we will have a system similar to Eve. Nothing will be locked out based on a particular path you follow, but it will take real world time to train skills.

The low level of a skill will be quick to train, the higher levels will take a lot more time. I would expect a similar scale to Eve, something following the 80/20 rule. You get 80% of the max with 20% the effort and the last 20% takes 80% the effort.

  10. will it be possible to make rockets? i wanna fire ICBM-like rockets at invading space fleets <3

It has been said that drones wont be possible. A pilot will always be needed.

I hope however that this is just for having a ship run itself. I hope at least dumbfire missiles like this are possible and ideally ICBM type guided missiles.

  11. ok, thx for your answers. So i will wait until the release because 120 € are enormous much money for a game what isn't ready In the approach.

Well alpha isnt ment to be a playable game with all the features. It is for testing individual aspects and troubleshooting the game, making sure features work. Dont expect an open server to play on or expect it to be the same as some of the playable Early access games out there.

Beta is where you will really get to play the game and get a feel for it. There will be some bugs and issues, but on the whole you can expect to experience what the final game will be like. But expect all progress to be wiped at release.

As stated, Alpha is sept 2017, beta was scheduled for early 2018 and release around late 2018. With the delay of alpha and anticipating usual development delays My bet is on Beta being mid to late 2018 and Release being early 2019.

  12. This would be a really cool idea. And I think it might not be as niche as you suspect. Considering DU is designed to be a long term game, it makes sense to think about the future and 3D Printers are only going to get more widespread as time passes. I'd love to print out models

Look at eve as an example. With the availability of 3d printing increasing more and more players are printing ship models. And those arent even their own personal designs

  13. Dont pledge alpha expecting to play the game like most early access allow. It is ment for bug tracking and troubleshooting.

The begining of alpha will be a lot of specific test on certain parts of the game. It likely wont seem much like a playable game until late alpha. And remember, even in beta everything is expected to be wiped. But thats where youll beable to actually play the game

  14. What if Dual Universe started releasing toys/figurines. Just a thought.

Well that would be nice. But what cpuld they do? The ARK, native creatures and plants? Everything else is player built.

What he wants, and I think would be cool, is to export and print your personal constructs. That cool fighter you made or your personal battlecruiser that no ome else.

Sure DU may pull a popular ship or the first player stargate, but there will be millions of player constructs. You can expect hundreds if not thousands of designs to be popular amoungst alliances.

  15. What's with this "eye-protection" scheme made by the government?

The sun is actually a flat disk of light. And the moon is a projected hologram.

I see the Solar Eclipse about every day, because these huge cotton balls keep flying across the sky.

    So yeah! Beat that, Scientists!

Not another one of you conspiracy theorist. The moon is not a hologram, we've landed on it.

Its a giant hollow alien base used for amplifying and focusing the mind control signals sent from Juipter.

  16.

This. And also it is unlikely that a static construct (aka a building) will be able to extend over territory boundaries. If it could, who would own the building if the neighboring territory changes hands?

By the above I assume you mean claims in space which are very much *not* a thing. Though building a static construct outside claimable territories (aka "space stations") will definitely be doable.

Now assuming that planets may do that spinning thing, you would need to cover the entire planet in a ring to "roof" a territory.

That sounds like another good reason to have revolving planets, besides sunrises and sunsets.

It could be that voxels from neighboring chunks physically couldnt connect due to alignment snaps. Think of starmade planets. But as DU is using a more advamced voxel system over cubes, I dont think it will be an issue. Besides that would mean every kilimoter has a disconnect in the landscape.

So lets assume its possible, what wpuld happen if it was in 2 territories. Simple, you have access to modify the portion only in your territory, just like the ground. I do expect building, static constructs to be different than mobile, in they dont move. So doing this should be no harder than dealing with territory claims.

If it is, just have it so the teritories have to be merged, and controls linked.

Besides, we know there will be mega buildings greater than 1km.

  17. i dont think that would make sense tho? how would the lore explain just randomly not being able to claim certrain lands

Space time interference due to res nodes?

Its magical tech that allows you to restrict access to modifying the land, who knows what governs it. Could be an issue with the TCUs not being able to function properly that close to eachother with so little mass.
