  1. Scanning and mining devblog was added recently. And this got me thinking:

One of the base ideas of all the mechanics in DU is to make it easy to use but hard to master. There is mastery in the form of both character skills and player experience.

Can mining be made more interesting than point and click and the better the tool the more efficient the mining will be? I am not talking about the logistic of moving the material after it has been mined which could be an issue all on its own but rather this is about the mining itself.

It has been mentioned elsewhere that the deeper you mine there is potential for heat dangers (Such as minecrafts lava pools). Other natural hazards such as gas pockets could also be an issue. I feel these should be done very carefully as they could easily become an annoyance and not actually make the game play any different.

How about an increased or decreased efficiency in mining at a certain angle or from a certain direction, like with or against the "grain" or strata of a certain resource. Why this is interesting is that hand mining will more easily follow the changes of the resources strata while a digging machine will lose some of that efficiency.

Can you think of other ways to spice up the mining?

  2. Scanning and mining devblog was added recently. And this got me thinking:

Could scanning for constructs be done similarly? But instead of the type of resource dictating what type of scan is required, the elements on/material of the construct itself dictates how susceptible the construct is to the various scans. Similarly to prospecting one could use the radial scan to detect the absence/presence of a construct and then use a directional scan to get a better idea of its location. This is especially useful for finding an active construct. Inactive constructs will be much more difficult if not impossible to find.

Another thought perhaps dedicated long range directional scanners pointed out to space could give an indication of the presence of another system. Through triangulation, this could give an indication of how far away that system is. Detecting the presence of another system is the first step to going to it.

  3. The hardest part is the waiting....

To while away the time Alpha Academy is holding a small competition.  Join the Alpha Academy discord to take part.

    Competition details:

Task: Create Asteroid base. You ask base of what kind? Use your fantasy!

Limits: Core of your asteroid must be sphere with diameter of at least 64 blocks (you can make it bigger, but keep in mind that 128 is limit of the tool). You are free to modify it or it's surrounding space any way you want. Ships, stargate, debris, smaller asteroids, whatever you want.

Delivery: You can post your creations in #competition, one picture allowed per participant (you can keep updating it).

Date: You can post until November 15th, I will allow pretty much all creations made before I wake up the day after.

Allowed Tools: MagicaVoxel and/or MagicaVoxel Renderer

Allowed Formats: Any picture you can post on Discord, but I recommend you to make it PNG or if you want it more fancy, try to amaze us with GIF sequence

Rewards: Good feeling for every participant. Even better feeling for winner and those really close behind. And we will be sure to share your efforts with DU developers :-)

    Extra notes

    - you can edit your post and if you need help with deletion, just send me message

    - you can also reserve your post and let us know that you are going to participate by posting "RESERVED" in the channel and later you can replace it for real image

    - you can discuss the posts in #competition-chat

    - if you accidentally post to wrong channel, no worries, we can handle that:-)

  4. Just trying to see what kind of community this will be. Are the majority of players wanting to live a live of peace, or do they have a lust for blood?

The game is built for both. Neither is more valid than the other. The warmongers will need ships and weapons to war with. The ships they have will need repairs or replacing. The arms race will ensure that the best ships will be in demand.  Sure, warmongers can have their own ship yards but they won't be quite as good as those provided by organisations concentrating solely on ship building.

Hate to say it - but the majority are here to break from their peaceful, monotonous real life, just to cause hell... and feel good about themselves while doing it.

Civilization will allow for more civilized and constructive outlets for raising hell, such as the glory of arena battles, hovercraft races or treasure hunts.  I am sure there will be those that wish to watch the world burn, and for those there is a military answer.

  5. Player run banks are built on trust.  If players find out a bank has taken their goods and fled, that banker will be hunted down and definitely won't function in a banking capacity again.

Same goes for loans a bank gives to another player.  What prevents that player from just taking the money and running?  Because not only will there be a bounty happening, but that player will not get another loan from anyone.

And those are the mild consequences.

  6. I can see player run treasure hunts working quite well DU. Now I am thinking of setting up a few myself. Anyone else interested in creating unique riddles, tasks and clues for a few treasure hunts of varying scope, drop me a PM.

Build it and they will come.

  7.  So how I see it ...

This is either being massively over sold or there are some "gotchas" that are still being overcome (and I seriously want them to be) but these guys must be on to something that through years of digging around and researching this particular technology (Voxels) I have not found anyone that can do this or anyone who even remotely has an idea how to do this on this scale.

That on it's own raises questions does it not?

I really don't want another no mans sky ... but I do want to know that this stuff really is possible so a little insight in to the tech would be really nice to have if the devs over at NQ are in a sharing mood (just a little technical peek ... please!).

Honestly, I don't think your questions or skepticism can be answered here. Any reply will just lead to more questions and "but what if"s. The media released by NQ gives a good indication of what they have now. How it works beyond that is unknown.

Are there concessions? Yes. Constructs will not be able to break in half: the two halves will just float together. There are more covered in various locations.

  8. I see the Order of Meru is a religious organization. (I'd like my Order of Meru to have a side of Cthulhu please). That is easy to understand.

DU Explorers says it's a fan based organization. That makes it a bit more difficult to define exactly. So you are saying that this organization won't exist as an in game organization when DU is released? It does contain prominent members of many other organizations (even Twerk is there). So what exactly does DU Explorers do?

  9. All good points. Same points can be used for ramming: small ships do minimal damage while larger ones are more substantial but hurt themselves too, so a ramming ship could be usable but only once, because it's front fell off on the first impact. Sacrifices in the reality department will be (and has already) be made to make the game function as a MMO. Small starships bouncing off massive space stations, I am not entirely happy with, but I can live with it. Overloads would be nice, but if they hurt no one else but it's own ship, I can live with that too.

  10. Some good discussions here (between the trolling). I like the idea of self destructing ships and ways to prevent it as already outlined.

Though it has been indicated that the reason JC does not want ramming in the game is not only because of voxel deformation but to prevent "missile ships". I don't see self destructing ships affecting anything else for the same reason. Sure they can be made expensive but for a large corporation how expensive can a small ship really be, without making small ships out of reach for the average player?

  11. So here is the rub: You will have access to other organisations stuff anyway through the RDMS, without having membership in another organisation. As stated previously, this will not stop players from interacting with those orgs as if they were members.  As long as they have the rights of members, actually being a member doesn't matter.  So preventing anyone from joining other orgs is pretty meaningless.

If membership isn't legalized, it will be done secretly or unofficially.  Then again, nothing stops a spy from doing it secretly anyway.

So what is the end result?  Forcing members to not be able to join other orgs will only bring a false sense of security.

    YMMV
