  1. There may even be Organizations set up purely for that.  Training.Org.   Pay to join, get to a certain level then move on.  That could accomodate the more casual player that doesn't want to be part of a large active Org.

  2. I know the Dev's want to bring new players up to speed quickly with basic skill sets.  An idea:

You start the game with a choice, remain asleep and arrive at the planet with basic skills functioning following some cutscene about the knowledge being implanted while you slept(not recommended) and take it from there or,

You have the option to be temporarily awoken for Synapse Familiarization, muscle memory whatever.

During your waking phase you get the usual tutorials you get from games, this is how you move, this is your inventory, this is how you shoot, this is how you mine, this is how to add skills, this is how you craft etc.

As it's during the journey, maybe on the old holodeck, nothing it permanent so you get to mess around with options a little before commiting yourself to the live shard and making a mess of it.

Once the tutorial is complete you are put back into stasis and arrive with your new knowledge.

  3. I wonder if items in DU will decay over time, perhaps requiring repairs by using elements (repair machines) that could only be operated by someone with the appropriate skills.

or by someone using a token made by someone with appropriate skills.

  4. I stil think some sort of rares system could work, even if its only cosmetic. With so much building going on it would be nice to be able to collect things to make your constructs unique. Similar how on old beach shack might have bits of old wreckage nailed to it or some weird ornate piece on the wall.

A 'rare' event could be something like a Comet, once a month or whatever it passes through some sector of space, Aphelia pre-warns of its arrival, give people enough time to get their battle gear ready, then it becomes a fun battle to try and gain conttrol of that sector temporarily so you can harvest whatever is either on the comet or what is tail leaves behind, or even just a free for all scrap for the materials/items.

  5. Will this be a thing? I mean other than just free for all.

Some player makes an arena on some planet, or a track around it.

We could have organized events, inter-organization, one on one, group vs group.

Use it for training new players.

  6. How is this going to work. Will we have multiple charcters with the same name allowed with an invisible number assigned to them or all unique names?

Also will this just be your forum name or will be able to choose an in game nickname?

Sorry if its a repeat I couldn't find a thread on it.

  7. 1. The devs can't do so, it would create an uber-toxic enviroment for the players Do what I did in most MMOs with chat channels. Turn of any "trade" or "local" channels, so you won't have to tolerate the spam

    2. What you can ask, is for trial accounts to not be able to whisper to people in the game That's something even better

The problem with 1. is that you lose the legitimate chat too. I would also consider the spam/different languages you get in most games far more toxic than any environment that resulted from the option to tune out the unwanted stuff.

And on 2. yeh that is kind of what I meant with the account age thing, it stops alot of the gold sellers.

It's a shame you have to rely on addons for this kind of function.

  8. Whatever communication method is used, please for the love of Ice Cream put in some kind of spam block function from the word go, one that preferably is editable so you can block phrases, words, account age etc. This is always left out in games releases.

  9. The single Shard model will probably open up a whole bunch of its own social issues. like If you don't get on with a person or a group, there isn't really anywhere to go other than offline. So it will be intersting to see how this impacts the gameplay.  Keeping both Rookie and Veteran players active will be the tricky part because of various issues that already existed in MMo's, adding this new model will be interesting.

We all know how poisonous the online community can be.  It will be a huge job policing such an open game, which will probably be the cause of a load of forum grief and inevitable rage quits.  The only way to avoid most of the issues will be to give players other activities that won't involve direct contact.

As with all games, any content thats put in the game now will be absorbed in a ridiculously short time. This is often padded out in MMO's with some sort of grind.  The only way to avoid the 'burn out' you get after years of a game with a grind mechanic is to change or add something.  No-one will be happy with change so plans to add stuff for veteran players now will only benefit.

Make the destination worth the journey.

  10. What are the plans looking forward years when it comes to new players?

I've played numerous MMO's, a few of them for several years and they have all pretty much followed the same path.  At first you play the game and level up and learn the ins and outs of the game, you reach end game and start getting the high end gear/vehicles. You get to stroke your Epeen knowing that you have some nice gear from your time and effort.  After a couple of years, the playerbase starts to separate into hardcore and casual players. The blitzers have left by now(the ones that will probably post their reviews on release day), and your left with your core player base.

Then the drive to get new players kicks in and what happens more often than not is the game starts to get dumbed down to accomodate the new players. As a result the gameplay suffers too.  An influx of inexperienced players into a complex game usually creates some sort of drama,  your original core player base starts to get fed up and drifts away from the game, either from frustration at not being able to find enough knowledgable players to play with or because it isn't vanilla anymore, boredom or some other game tweaking their interest. Now your heading towards a core player base that is largely new players, as a result more dumbing down and eventually you end up with an Arcade game allbeit one that makes alot of money because its a great business model.

The worst part of all this from a player side(for me at least), especially on a MMO's is that it no longer matters how much time you put into a game, you just pay, skip the levelling and learning part of the game and jump straight in at the deep end locking horns with other players that have spent time and effort to develop their account over years. It's when the dumbing down starts I usually start to lose interest in a game.

All the pre-planning and all the amazing ideas and designs are then wasted and forgotten.

Do you have any thoughts on trying to keep the veteran players, either rewards for time played(e.g. gameplay tokens, unique skins) or maybe using some of them as in-game Authority(teachers, guides, moderators etc) or trying to maintain the 'vanilla' gameplay.

Getting new players up to speed will be pretty important, a strong in game help system, automated or otherwise would help alot.  Educate the player don't change the game.

  11. On the Issue of 'safe building zone ideas'.  One method that worked well was UO's building model. On going into edit mode on your plot of land, other players were unable to enter that space or see or interact with the player or the construct.  From inside the zone you could see the world as normal around you, other players etc and you had options to Save your design and Commit.  Until you've hit the commit button it appears and behaves as an un-edited space.

The option to save designs without commiting is nice for the practice.

Ofc I have no idea how this sort of construction 'bubble'  could work with this technology but it's an idea.
