  1. One of the most important aspects of a work of science fiction (game or otherwise) is the ability for it to convey a sense of wonder. Wonder...it's a feeling of awakening caused by the expansion of one's awareness of what's possible (paraphrased from Wikipedia.)

Does or did Dual Universe ever give you a sense of wonder? To what degree? What could be done to improve the game's ability to convey this feeling?

I admit I did get a sense of wonder about building my first ship which was able to just even fly. After being stuck running and/or hovering on the ground for perhaps a few hours or days, I felt awestruck even just being able to create something that could fly. Once I was able to reach space, I had even more of this fabled sense of wonder.

I think the game does convey a lot of wonder but there could always be more things to add to the experience. As many people have said, the planets could look more interesting and have more varied environments - this would make exploring more fun. Space itself could also use more features to be able to convey this wonder.

  2. Regardless about you feel about Dual Universe as a game, I think some of you (myself included) can also consider it a "tech demo" of sorts (similar to other space games currently in development.)

How do you feel about Dual Universe, as it is now, as a "tech demo" of sorts?

I think it's a decent tech demo in terms of size and scope. It shows a big universe where you can move around a lot and build at least. The graphics of the voxels are decent. However, there's a lot of bugs that can hinder performance. Also, the planets and the rest of the environments are kinda bland with not many distinct features. And of course, gameplay issues are a big problem.

  3. One of the most important things about a sandbox game - or just about any game, really, is interactivity. To be able to influence the game environment through your actions, and in turn, the ability of the environment to have an effect on you...that is one of the most engaging aspects of games.

Do you feel Dual Universe is a very interactive game, currently?

What can be done to increase the amount of interactivity in this game?

I think Dual Universe is quite interactive, although the degree to which it is can still be improved. While you are able to change your environment in a variety of ways through the build mode, I still think there could be thing to improve the level of interactivity in the game.

Take for example, the presence of water. While some objects are able to react to water, not everything does. The avatar is unable to do things like swim or float in the water, for instance. But this is just one example.

  4. Question: Dual Universe is really laggy for me now - it wasn't like this for me before. It has made flying around a pain in the butt.  Do you think its time for me to upgrade my computer? I currently have 16 GB RAM with a GTX 1660 Super GPU (6 GB.)

Request: I just need someone to test if my surrogate pod is working. - if it is visible in search and accessible to all. It's name is "aliensalmon pod".

  5. I guess to start off, I didn't know it would really click with me because the game was primarily first person. I had a history of not being able to get into first-person games such as Goldeneye 007 and Elite Dangerous. However, this was balanced with my eagerness to find a good science fiction space MMO to call home. I was envisioning this game would let me explore the universe and encounter people and all sorts of things as well.

I also liked the concept because I was into Second Life, a sandbox virtual world that allows building. (I also found out about this game from a Second Life forum.) I also liked the somewhat vibrant colors - they seemed welcoming to me.

Despite it's faults I'm glad I played this game. I enjoyed my time in game and forums are entertaining as well. I am grateful for NovaQuark for this very unique experience they created.

  6. I personally enjoyed my time in Dual Universe so far (although I'm currently taking a break) but I'm worried about the size of the playerbase - after all, the community is what makes an MMO! It doesn't seem like people have much faith in the game in the game anymore. I was wondering if there is still hope for this game to survive and thrive. I personally hope it stays for a long time because I like the concept behind the game. If you think this game will die, what went wrong and hope could the devs prevented or be able to fix it?

  7. Yes, I know submitting suggestions is futile, and this may have been discussed already, but what do you think of having gravity guns in this game?

I think it would be cool. Should be pretty fun to mess with gravity and spacetime!

  8. Perhaps what Dual Universe needs to retain players are more tools to facilitate socialization, such as emotes, voice chat, actions, and stuff like that. It works using the idea that a main reason why people play MMOs are the social aspects.

Perhaps you can win them as prizes for doing activities in the game such as pvp or whatever.

    Do you guys agree?

  9. 3/14 or March 14 is Pi Day! (In Europe, 22 July, or 22/7, is Pi Approximation Day.)

How many digits of Pi have you memorized?

I have memorized 11 digits of pi in Base-Ten: 3.1415926535. I believe that's enough precision to estimate the circumference of a sphere the size of Earth (give or take a few molecules).

According to the wiki list, no mmo based on this engine has been released yet. All of them were either cancelled or stopped being worked on. I guess you will have a hard time finding qualified and affordable developers.

To your bonus question: Why? You want to jump from one crowdfunded game to the next, even though you have burnt your fingers on DU ? Even though I may be stepping on the toes of one or two SC fanboys and fangirls, the game has been in development for 8 years now, sometimes more, sometimes less progress.  It doesn't really offer you "building in open-space" too.

I would look at some alternatives like Starbase. Otherwise, I don't know what's currently hot except for the early access games on steam.

Yeah, I'm aware of Starbase and have applied for Alpha access to that game. The problem is they haven't accepted me yet.

I guess I should exercise patience....

  11. Given that this game is dying (or dead already), I at least hope that the "building in open-space" aspect of the game is repeated somewhere else. Maybe another company can buy the rights to this game and improve on it?

Bonus question: Should I pledge to Star Citizen? I tried a little but through the "free fly" events and it was a decent experience, even though I couldn't play very long. I've watched some Star Citizen videos and the players seem to be having fun.

P.S. As to why I asked about Star Citizen on the Dual Universe game forum? I figured since there is little moderation now I would just ask my question in the most active forum. I wanted to post this in a place I was familiar with and where I know they won't be any bias from Star Citizen fans.

  12. I first heard about this game on a Second Life forum. I've always been interested in virtual worlds like Second Life and IMVU, and I've also played my fair share of MMOs (although I tend to prefer eastern MMOs like MapleStory over Western ones such as World of Warcraft). Many people described this game as "Second Life in a space sci-fi setting" and I thought that this concept was interesting.

I've also always been a fan of sci-fi, and given the fact that most MMOs are medieval fantasy-based, this game seemed to be a refreshing change of pace.
