  1. How can this game not have a larger following? We've been griping as a community for a game like this for years. Years and years.

    The game will grow a larger community, when more infos will be known to the devs and communitcated. What do we have?

     

    • A game with full groundbased pvp and fully destructable environment on ONE planet (while most people dream of exploring a space sim)
    • A game which only offers tools, but no real content. People tend to consume content, most don't like to do something to be entertained
    • Many interesting questions in the current Q&A thread offer "we might add in the future" answers to things quite vital to a game to succeed

    All this combined is quite underwhelming. DU seems to sound great at first glance, but it simply does not offer enough to get people hooked. I was looking for a space sim. I don't care for groundbased pvp hacking my way around to collect ressources for weeks to build a ship which can't even leave the starsystem. I see the option to destroy everything not as an advantage, because it will discourage people to build something, when they have to fear it will be destroyed after they log on next.

     

    Pvp on ground is offered in a wide variaty of games. Destructable terrain will only hook so many. DU can only score with its customizable spaceships at a large scale and of course something to do with them other to bring them down again.

     

    Currently I get the feeling the devs only have some ideas but lack the big picture of the game. And after talking to other potential customers, I am not the only one with this feeling. Fanboys will cry "Pre-Alpha, what do you expect", I know, but currently DU is not much more than a vision and it will show at the kickstarter. DU seriously lacks many different types of content(either way the game is intended to go) to get much more people interested. You have only so many people interested in raw pvp and onyl so many interested in minecraft like building and both type of players don't mix well, if you ask me.

     

    I don't want to rant, DU intrigues me, but currently (pre-alpha, I named it) there is not much to it to attract masses.

    Well, if voxel planets make everything possible, think about what kids love to do with sand and water...

     

    Someone will fill your underground city with the water of the nearest river ... at least, if everything is possible B)

  3. But if they make the food just a buffing thing, I think the buff needs to be quite strong. I mean, if it isn't strong then cooking / growing crops and such will basicly fall to the side as "useless" or "not worth the time".

    You would be surprised for what little buffs people buy and use food in MMOs B)

    It would be a good moment to start a new thread to compile all the most pressing questions with all the new members who arrived in the last week. Prepare your list, and we will discuss soon about it. However, keep in mind we can't promise to give you a precise answer for all questions as, as always, we are just in pre-alpha and many things are far from being finalized ;)

    I am sure some of the dev team read along in the forum, since it is not too hard too track currently. I guess the hundreds of users here now will grow to many thousands by the end of the year and by then it could be hard to read all we 'mess around' in here.

     

    So I suggest, you just pick the questions you are able to answer, perhaps even in a new dev blog so everybody can see, even if he is new to the site. :)

  5. As long as the game will be released for pc, it has to offer mouse and keyboard control. Simply because many people don't like or even own joysticks or gamepads. When you use them, you have to realize, the game is split between cockpitmode and walking somewhere. Your UI and your options will be different. Who(nobody?) wants to use totally different controls for either playmode?

  6. I do like the idea of biological ships. You could find new ingredients on different planets to upgrade your options, growing your ship components. Or you could find very special fertilizer to make stuff grow faster/stronger.

  7. I'm against it, this is supposed to be a builder/scifi mmorpg, not a survival game. I definitely dont want to be forced to regularly eat food, its only a chore without benefit.

    It is quite funny, but the food to survive question comes up in nearly every early stage of a MMORPG. Everytime there are enthusiasts voting for it and (nearly) every time it will be cancelled or ignored because of a simple fact: it generates frustration and offers nothing. It is a sci-fi game which will - as we currently know - play more on planets than in space. You will spend more time struggling to get back to space, defending your properties or attacking other peoples stuff than cruising harmlessly around picking flowers and cook a meal.

     

    This is not picknick in space, it is a fully blown all against all anarchy universe. It would be as vylqun said: only a chore without benefit. Which is the reason almost every game skipped it during development.

     

    Most games use food to buff you in some way, but it is not necessary to play. Food could make you faster, more effective while harvesting stuff, clever food makes you research harder or something. But don't ever make it a necessity.

  8. Blueprints could be really interesting :P But I doupt I would use them that much as I LOVE the idea to craft my own things :D but we will see in the end don't we?

     

    But the idea of selling blueprints are also quite interesting, I mean if someone managed to create the OPTIMAL type of ship, then all would like it wouldn't they?

    Understandable. But not everyone is into crafting. Creating a big ship will use up not only loads of ressources but also quite some hours of designing, testing and adjusting. I am sure not everyone is willing to spend that much. Especially the big ones are worth a blueprint.

  9. The issue with not having a monthly is they often have to make a shop. Whales then dictate the direction and content of the game.

     

    Relating question. If DU will be as player made as it sounds I wonder what can be offered to us as per expansion content or cosmetics. 

    Easy one.

    • We have to use several premade stuff to build our constructs. They could offer cosmetic variants to them or even new ones, only available with the shop. As long as they would not be more powerful (noone likes pay to win) this would be interesting.
    • Keys to some ancient vaults found throughout the universe
    • All things cosmetic we could look at (clothes, armor, helmets, weapons, capes) - offer an appearance slot and you have a truckload of opportunities for your shop, your spacecraft has stylish flames trailing it? Your engines are yellow, red, violet, sparkling pink :lol:
    • Convenience items which let you mine slightly easier or in style, hover you around instead of running, bigger backpack, greater resource load?

    If we collect ideas or look at other games shop, there will be plenty of options for any possible game without hurting the game balance. Yes some people will cry at every shop, but some will cry at everything, always, everywhere B)

  10. I have heard one of the arkships has been compromised. Some unknown type of parasite infested all human in the ship. The arkships last message has been, they found a suitable planet. Can't be far off...

  11. It is a game and games exist to provide fun. Nobody (with a sane mind) will see it as fun to be bullied or mistreated. People will just get angry and angry players are the worst type of customers. But if your out for ransoms, try your luck as a bountyhunter, when you are about to kill your target far away from the next ressurrection point. This might work out. ;)

  12. Dual Universe is intended to work on a cycle of creation and destruction. Environment -> Resources -> Materials -> Equipment -> Destruction/Loot. Without the destruction phase there is no need for the resources. However it is only one stage of many and it is heavily dependent on the other stages! Combat oriented players are dependent on the builders for equipment just as miners, builders, etc are dependent on friendly combatants for protection against enemy combatants. 10-15% of players being combat oriented sounds reasonable to me.

    So it is intended to work similar to EvE, which will not work, because it has different rules. First: EvE has savezones for every type of playing, where soloplayers can dwell, grow, contribute to the game. With all open with the exception of the arkships area and some randoms spots, which have been somewhat arkified, soloplayer won't be able to do much more than build a small ship. I doubt, they will ever leave a system on their own in that setting.

     

    You might say: hey, but this is cool, its a PvP game. Well might be the case, but this will drive loads of potential players away. There are many MMO gamers out there who like to play on their own on a evening or two, then again joining their guild. This works well in nearly every MMO, it won't work here. What good is a space sim, when this sim does not offer you to leave you startsystem?

     

    The next point is: everything is made of voxels and the human being is very destructive in nature. No guild of a reasonable size will be able to protect their stuff. I sincerly doubt there will be such things like cities of outposts in space without arkification. In EvE even this high security areas have seen raids, killing each and everyone though this was rare and expensive. In DU this is quite simple. Big guild -> many or big ships -> big destruction. You are not online, protecting? Great. I can't believe in any real buildings and greater structures with human players in a game where everyone is able to attack everything an any time. And they will...

     

    Do your unlimited open PvP in space, but don't be sorry, if this game will never grow to a notable success. There have to be limits, or most people without big guilds behind them will leave within months. Might be wanted by the devs, to only get the hardcore PvP audience, who knows :)

  13. Wonder if we can have AI in our ships :P Would be really cool to have someone talking to you when you fly your ship.

    I think that only depends on the size and the elements of/in your ship. AI is able to run certain things, but I doubt we will get any voiceovers...

  14. So it seems the sleuths on Reddit are claiming that the ships from the E3 trailer are not in fact made in engine but are actually bought models, is this true?

    Does it really matter? I don't decide if I will buy the game until the end of the Beta. Come on guys, its a preview of the most early stages of the game. Most of the people are offering some eye candy for a con like E3 in this stage will show up some creativity for a hot ironed video. That's nothing weird or unusual.

     

    Calm down, ignore the troll and see what the next months will happen on the news and feature front. No sane gamer values a game by a pre-alpha video for a con. B)

    If they are lying for that... They can lie about everything ! They are talking about "their" in-game engine "voxel technology"  did they show anything else ? There is like NO information about that "technology" it could be anything ... 

    Charming, really. This is a pre-alpha state of a huge project. Ever been to software development? In this forum are only enthusiasts, easily hooked be the sheer amount of opportunities this Dual Universe might offer. Do you think some bullshit crying youtuber will cause the very first fans of Dual Universe to run away in shock? Yes I viewed at least 20 minutes of the video trying to find the reason for his 'hard truth' B)

     

    So am I shocked? No. They summed up a video, to have something to show on E3 and their tiny loyal fanbase in this forum. So what? They work on the very foundation of the game. I am not surprised, noone found the time to build big capital ships on their own up to now. So they bought a few models. Does this hurt you? Bullshit cryers will always find something to cry about, or haters gonna hate? Ever heard that?

     

    The only thing you try to achieve are clicks on you youtubechannel. I would advice the moderators to delete this user and his content. Does this advertising a youtube channel not somehow violates the forum rules? :huh:
