  1. Welcome to DU, skylord!

Glad to see another interested party joining the game (no pun intended). Might I suggest first starting with the various Devblogs - they offer a wealth of information and should help you get fairly acquainted with the general concepts and mechanics present in DU.

I'm afraid your wait for the perfect space MMO isn't quite over yet - there's still a while to go before alpha :) but in the meantime, make yourself at home here in the forums.

As for organizations, there is a whole multitude of them to explore...oh wait! What's that down there? Oh my, one organization already conveniently linked below! What an excellent starting point! In all seriousness, however, there are many many organizations to explore here. Peruse them at your leisure!

Happy foruming - it's all you'll be doing for the next week.

  2. Would have been nice if someone screen captured and uploaded the video of it working with those few thousand players though.

Just to clarify, that didn't literally mean thousands of actual players. It was the server testing a load equivalent to the load of a few thousand players. Still, I agree - would be very cool to see some of that :)

  3. Bleuprints could partially exict in someone's brain.

By creating a neural connection either in a friendly manner or by force, which of course should be quite difficult.new bleuprints could be reawakened.

Perhaps by joining a group your bit of knowledge (bleuprints) could be added or even be substracted to the group. when that person allies with another group their bit of knowledge goes with them.

This will of course greatly stimulate alliance's and hostilities

    as knowledge is power.

The movie Elysium used this concept where John Carlyle's reboot program was stored in his brain, and upon being injured, the neural program was destroyed, but not before it had been transferred out into Max's brain. Interesting idea - could prove for some fascinating gameplay, but not too sure on the practicality of implementing it.

  4. It's an interesting question, because although players are supposed to be able to create their own weapons, the actual visual effects (lightning bolts for an arc laser) and actual damage effects, as well as the energy input required to power them would still have to be coded into the game by devs.

  5. This is how I would imagine it as well, its all just ships until we classify them, most ships fit into classifications based on mission, not tonnage.

Actually it goes even broader: It's all just constructs until we classify them as buildings and ships and Death Stars. From there we can futher classify ships.

  6. Here's an idea: If you are captured enable respawn without suicide.  This would mean whoever captured you still gets an NPC version of your character that they can imprison/ransom/enslave/etc while whoever was captured can still continue playing with the same penalties normally associated with death.  If the player ever returns and rescues their NPC clone (which may be done by trade, effectively paying a ransom, or by force) then maybe the quantum reality trickery that they used to respawn in the first place can also be used to re-combine the two duplicates and reverse the original death penalty.  Of course this only works if the penalty for capture/death is severe enough to discourage people from allowing themselves to be "captured" and cloned as NPC prisoners so I'm not sure what kind of penalty that would require.

This would just be so paradoxical that I'm not sure it would be worth it to implement.

  7. Awh :( I want to be able to design the inside. It would be so awesome if we could like choose to have maybe a Hologram of the ship to the right, where the diffrent info would be and so forth.

The interior layout can also be custom-designed. Some elements may be premade, such as consoles or cockpit seats, but nothing prevents you from decorating the interior and placing elements wherever. Note the Tweeted picture below:

  8. Just the space whales would be cool, reminds me of a Doctor who episode....

Notice the scale: perfect for the planned epic scale of DU!

That is the episode - Starship UK in all its glory - granted, they had captured the star whale and were torturing it into moving when the star whale had been supporting the ship of its own will...sad story.

  9. Stellaris has these "space whales" that fly around aimlessly. They actually "eat" the gas from gas giants. I think something similar that you would build onto them would be cool. Then you could fly them through a gas giant before a long trip. Not sure if this mentioned already, but....

This is almost exactly that one episode of Doctor Who - "The Beast Below", where the Earth had been burned up and the entire U.K. population was flying in space on "Starship UK", a city-spaceship built upon the back of a star whale that they had captured.

  10. I hope to one day bump into ISS Wandering Mountain by chance during my travels. Looks like anyone who signs up for this journey has to be committed for the long run - unless they just want to be left in some asteroid field somewhere :) Best of luck to you in this endeavor!

  11. Hmm, pretty old this topic, but let me put my oar in.

Ingame marriage should be mainly cosmetic, the only thing that they get from the game should be the knowledge about the partners position. Simply you know ever where your partner is regardless the distance between you two. Other benefits like tax reduction should be depending on the faction in which you are.

Just like in real life, you could theoretically marry in a church, but as long as you weren't at the registry office, to register your marriage, you're not married in the eyes of the state and receive no benefits accordingly. At leat here in germany that is so, to my knowledge.

To think about the idea further, as Faction leader the Question for you is: Want you married couples in your faction and how should they look?

The answer is yes: okay give married people just a little tax reduction, finish.

The answer is yes, but only straight: same her but the benefits are only applied to straight couples and you could theoretically apply punishments (extra duties) for gay couples, to prevent them from happening.

The answer is no/don't know: do nothing or punish them, its your decision.

This is simply made via the rights and duties.

The only Question left is: Will people that are marry via the game mechanic get an automated "married" tag, where the "Marriage Law" of the faction applys to or not?

As faction leader I would have no stance on it, and would probably leave marriage as a personal thing rather than one that is regulated and recorded...it would have no impact on the faction (whether good or bad), so the faction will not intentionally have an impact on marriages either. People can do what they want with relationships - I myself would not care if I were a bigshot up-there leader figure.

  12. I'd like to see all sorts of clothing options, with players being able to design their own clothes and equipment :-)

It would kind of be like Second Life in that aspect.

I'm going to guess this is one of those things we're probably not going to see though.

In the alpha definitely not. Hopefull this will be a later update.

  13. Maybe it could be a ship type... Like the biological "classes" of ships are more menouverable (since they are alive and can partly react on their own) and can sort of regenerate with time without repair... But they have much less armor and take damage easier due to them only having a sort of biological armor?

And they would need some sort of biofuel - instead of normal gas or rocket fuel, perhaps organic compost or...meat (like animal carcasses)? This brings to mind the Combine synths from Half-Life 2.
