Netherspark
After watching the new building gmeplay video it struck me, that on all the footage and screenshots we've seen so far the voxels are essentially blank and untextured. Sure they can be coloured but they're still just 'flat' and devoid. Is it actually possible to give them some actual texture/pattern, to make them look like metal etc? You want the voxel to have a metallic hue? You need to use metallic materials. Patterns and bump-maps are yet to be announced. Painting an object can't change its properties, you can't paint a wooden ship to look like a metallic ship. You can paint good gray, but it won't glea like iron for example. The voxels used had a color, it was a polymer color. And JC did paint the ship at the end of the video with those two red stripes. So yes, altering textures can be done, you just can't cange a voxle's properties visually, just its coloring for now.
ATMLVE
Different materials such as wood and metal will be available eventually. They just aren't focused on that right now, more so on more important aspects to make the game functional.
