The reason for the market is time related. Sure, everyone can make everything, but can they be bothered mining, to craft components to craft other components and spend a week getting a few items? Also those 200k items in market are the developers accounts to stimulate the economy, as they needed someone to have buy orders in.

I can't even find any information on how planet to planet travel is meant to work.
