  1. I think everything including large ships should be able to be placed in some sort of cargo container.  They can come in multiple sizes... Nesting smaller ones into larger ones should be possible as well.

What...How would you fit a large ship into a cargo container?  How does this even make sense?

I think having a cut off on what fits into a cargo container is a smart idea...the only difference between small/med/large sizes should be quantity.  Lets keep things reasonable...this isn't a magicians hat...only certain items of certain size are capable of fitting in a box.  The whole idea of a box in the first place is to carry numerous smaller objects...games cheat a bit and say well you can fit 100x metal plates and a gazillion other things and I think this is fine.  But we have to cut it at some point.  I think having the death star in a large cargo box or a Star ship Enterprise in a large cargo box is beyond that point.

  2. I hope so too, but they may implement it by using boosters instead of dampeners. Just like in real life, reverse thrust stops forward motion, and as for as in-atmosphere, you should be able to stop/hover by having vertical boolsters.

This is, by definition, what an inertia damper is.

I hope they have an inertia damper option.  Otherwise this game will not be fun...it's amazing how much gravity, friction, and pressure assist us in everyday life.  I have accidentally hit 'z' so many times in SE and turned off my dampers and paid a serious consequence for it!

I know you think I have made a brash and serious accusation by saying it won't be fun without inertial dampers...but spending 3/4's of your time trying to stop your roll and xyz momentum is NOT fun.  If you think it is then you probably have too much time on your hands.

  3. I want a star trek bridge.

I get what you are saying CaptainTwerkMotor...and I understand the urgency of being able to hear ships in space to be able to target them or avoid them.  But I think using sound is the wrong way to go about it.  I think ships, as modern fighter jets do, should have computer based targeting systems that would show up on a HUD.  Fighter jets (modern) don't hear the tanks that they are about to wreck...they don't hear the jets they are about to squash.  In fact, if you hear another jet in a jet you are way to close to them or they just burst the sound barrier.

I know you don't want it to be a silent game and I don't either which is why i suggest hearing your own ship and guns...which I find to be palatable and plausible.

  4. I think hearing anything other than your own ship is cheating the people who buy the game.  Hearing another persons ship implies that their is atmosphere which is incorrect; even if that other ship is right next to you.  You should hear your ship and your weapons and nothing else.

  5. you have more questions....

    - Why not?

    - Nothing, except fun building it

    - Lure people to it, then kill em there - they will stay forever

    - Megalodondollars and Raretium

Just have to say...I lol'd when I read "they will stay forever" ...touche my friend...touche

  6. You'll be able to rent land as far as I know, why not ships? Should work the same way, since it's all part of the "duties and management system". Not sure though if the ability to ask for money will be in this module or in the "contracts and jobs" (and you'd be able to ask a collateral in case of damage/steal/destruction).

Shit...that sounds very second life now.  Will we not get land for free?

  7. Oh,

And at a certain point, there's NO NEED to transmit player positioning that is "too far away."  I don't care what JC said in the interview.  I have no need of knowing the player positioning of someone in another star system.  You can't see them, and cant interact with them.  Other than text chat or other non critical events, which could still be sent.

Unless theres a reason the player needs to know about every online player's positioning (highly doubtful), then it's just a tremendous waste of bandwidth.

I am almost certain the server guy will have a cutoff point in order to maximize bandwidth.

I agree....but at this point this is essentially the same as instancing.  I am 100% okay with instancing ...anything to improve my frames.  But if I can have 10000 people all at once with good frames and no instancing I obviously prefer this.

  8. Exactly the technology they developed they call "dynamic area splitting". There is a video showcasing the tech.

And once more I'm going to link the wikipedia entry for JC the creative developer for people who are unfamiliar with him. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Christophe_Baillie

As you can see he is a well known scientist. With quite a few accomplishments to his name.

JC said that the mmo genre needs to be disrupted. And he developed the tech to do just that. I'm very confident that his claims will work out. At least on the tech side.

As for CvC not being in at launch, if NQ is able to deliver on the free expansions as they envision, I'm sure DU will grow over time. Like it should be. Like it used to be and that is a good thing.

By no means guys am I opposed to being proven wrong....I actually would prefer that I was.  I have just heard all of these claims for way to long...maybe I am a bit pessimistic.

There is no doubt that if JC pulls this off it will be revolutionary in terms of gaming.  It will be MAJOR...maybe as big of an advancement as VR is going to be.  I'm actually kind of giddy now thinking about the ramifications of him pulling this off for the gaming industry.

    Best of luck JC!

  9. Read the dev blogs, watch the videos.

Due is single shard with NO INSTANCES. Like on eve, there are NO INSTANCES. A sol system in eve can be run on one server/cluster (which is part of the single shard) because there are gates but you DON'T HAVE GATES IN DU. This is ONE world

Oh I read it...From a programming and networking stand point this is not likely going to happen without instancing or servers.  As other backers have stated, even Eve uses instancing.  I am not about to load in an entire infinite universe into my ram...just saying...No one has enough memory for this.

  10. Yea I know what they said.  But I don't see it happening...It just isn't feasible to expect to have 100k players or 8k players and all of their stuff being constantly updated by moving players.  It is fine if no one moves, but as soon as movement occurs, all locations have to be updated and that requires data; albeit small amounts of data.

Being that it is a space game, you have your standard x,y, velocity variables to tell other clients...but you also have zulu and trajectories.  Then you have health information, shields, and other bits of information.  Each of those aforementioned items will probably be stored in a unicode format which could take up to 4 bytes a piece.

So then we have something called polling which I am sure all of you are familiar with.  It wouldn't be a good game if the developer decided to handle network traffic by only updating the clients once a minute.  It might be okay if it was once a second but a lot can happen in that second and I am sure anyone landing would prefer it to be a lot higher than once a second.

So already we have at least 60 updates a second...and this goes for all of the clients online.  I am not sure how they are wanting to do the server...if they did a distributed server then all of the clients would tell each other all of this information 60 times a second.  If they used a traditional server then we would all tell the server this information 60 times a second and the server would tell all of us 60 times a second the updated information for our clients to draw on our screen.  It is also possible they use more of a cloud style server where nothing is actually ever on your client except what the server tells you...but I really don't see this one likely.

Regardless, I think you can already see a pattern.  We haven't even gotten to the static objects either or the re-spawns or the regrowth or anything else....There is a lot more that goes across the network.

Now network programmers have a lot of tricks up their sleeves to mitigate everything I just mentioned but despite all of this, it is still a ton of data when you consider the number of players that they are wanting to bring together without instancing and servers.

We will see...I would love if everyone could play at one time, I just don't see how it will be possible as a software engineer.

  11. I guess you plan on being a loner without friends or an organisation that you can delegate to keep your building running, right?

You can always do an AirBnB on your buildings, ren them for the period you are on vacation, or hire people to look after them on your stead. Pay them with DACs or whatever.

I at least, will be having some friends of mine to look after my crib when I'm offline. Or even better, I won't even build a base somewhere. It's not a mandatory thing to have a home in the game, you can always roll as a space nomad. The only thing you need is renting parking spots.

Yea I'll watch your crib!  Build it under mine or above or w/e ...then we can take turns!

  12.
Warning: The following Blog Post implies you already have some basic programming knowledge.
If you don't, some parts may seem a bit obscure or difficult to understand.

    JC Baillie,
    Project Lead.

Not to be a pain in the butt...and not that LUA would be that hard to learn...but could I write these scripts in C or C++?  Do you know of any online converters that would take C or C++ code and convert to LUA?  LUA looks like it might be similar to python which I also know.

  13. Yea I don't remember pets being exclusive to KS.

Honestly though, it doesn't matter.  I am almost certain that the non KS folk will pay a higher price for their DAC's.  I, myself, paid 4 dollars a DAC or less when you figure in that alpha and beta access is worth something (maybe 20-50 bucks).  Final price for a DAC for me was 2-4 dollars.  Final price when game is released, 10-15 dollars a DAC.  In fact, i bought almost 5 years (plus the two years of testing) of DAC's for the price (almost) a single year will cost when the game releases; that is a 7:1 return...a stellar deal if you ask me.

I understand your point.  If they said something they should stick to it.  But they didn't say exactly how it would be exclusive (if they did...I am not conceding on this).  If I said this but determined I needed to fund more I absolutely would open the KS back up and make your item gold or give you some special skin and raise the DAC price on the noobs (this single point right here is why KS is worth its weight).  I hope as a society (we are a society), you guys would forgive me as producing a game is what we have paid for and not having a game would be a complete waste of our money.

You act like because someone else has a level 4 pet that funded later than you, that you have lost your entire investment (such a horrible word choice...this isn't an investment) and I am simply not buying your argument.  I don't know what level backer you are, but you certainly got your DAC's cheaper than anyone else who comes in, in the future!

  14. I was trying to prevent from having a ton of line items....but you are right...I probably need a south Pacific line item for New Z, Australia, Philippines, Taiwan, etc.  I will consider adding it.

Glad to have you in here...you are our most future living world citizen!  So far until someone from Guam gets on.

  15. You missed Sweden,  so yeah, i'm from Sweden. I hope we have more Swe here.

I am sorry...editing the poll is no easy task either...it won't let me edit the line items.  I have to delete it completely and then re add it forcing everyone to re vote.

It is nothing personal....i had a lapse!  I forgot probably 30 countries.

  16. Ah you see I did say EU but I mean Europe.

Despite all the brexit stuff I still see my friends from the UK as europeans. Politics just doing what it likes to do, dividing people. ;)

I agree, note taken, and changes made....I guess I lost all my UK players though :(.  Sorry guys...revote please?

BTW Falstaf, what group are you part of?  I might join you!
