  1. I think that only depends on the size and the elements of/in your ship. AI is able to run certain things, but I doubt we will get any voiceovers...

"Scripts, DPUs and necessity will dictate. Nothing stops you from looping a little audio that keeps repeating the same thing at the start/running/ending of an event. The developers did say that fan made music is not on their road-map to Alpha, but then again Nyzaltar did hint that it might be possible to do that. What the developers migh just do is provide generic audio clips that say the simples of things. You're free to speculate what those might be. "

  2. It's a game balancing thing if you mean the power-per line of code consumption. Cause, you know, DPUs, which are in-game CPUs won't be running on wishful thinking you know :P

I just don't expect the Devs to let you create a 4000 lines worth of LUA script coded ship without having power as a limitation to how much automation can go in, like how mass is a limit on a ship's size.

"There might be another way to specify the DPU limits. According to the blog, the image shown of the DPU consisted of outgoing connections/slots. They could classify the DPUs based on how many slots there are per tier. Of course, this is only speculation and ultimately, it's up to them to decide."

  3. i'd like to see the source of your persistent "DPU's require power" claims.

"Well, there has to be a limit of some kind. Higher quality DPU's should be more expensive than lower quality ones. A core i3 costs less than a core i7, for example.

There has to be reason why certain ships handle more function more efficiently than others. While the "cost per code line" does seem a bit extravagant, I fully agree with quality-tier DPUs.

  4. Clearly this won't appeal to 99% of the community, however...

I would like to have the ability to play a character under permadeath conditions.

Since this is not likely going to be an option, I'm wondering what will happen to a players name and contacts if they delete their character.

Obviously recreating a new character under the same name wouldn't restore a local contacts list, but would other people see the name pop up on their own contacts lists?

I am wondering if there will be a way to prevent a name from being reused after a character is deleted.

I suppose that question plays into my idea for an optional permadeath mechanic. I'd like to be able to play a character that only lives once, and in a way that will prevent me from ever being able to play that character again, or someone else pretending they are me if i delete said character.

"Contrary to popular opinion, I think this is an essential feature. Imagine what the poor server will be force to contend with in four to seven years' time, if people can't delete their character. Some players will get banned, others will get humiliated, organisations will fall and so on. Players will, time and time again, want to start over. I wonder whether the developers have discussed this possibility? Great idea."

  5. You only limitation should be how well you can script, and what computational power you have available to perform such tasks on board. By using some additional power sure you can add some realism and balance though seems largely impractical and limiting on other features. The best way for capitals to work is to automate as many simple systems as possible while staffing the necessary ones and some optional to create a seamless creation of life from the beast of a ship.

"With the importance of hacking coming to light, the less the automated scripts the better. Or you'll just have to secure your scripts with jargon and intelligence. You won't want someone using your ship to quality check into a star or finding out how many other structures your craft can ram through."

  6. I wonder if it wil be like minecraft where you can stack blocks verticaly and then destroy the supporting block without having the other books falling down a cuz I wana build some floating islands.

"You'll need thrust for that. A whole lot of thrust. That means you'll need fuel. A massive or even insane amount of it. Gravity is an active factor in Dual Universe which makes it impossible to have something floating in air without thrust holding up. Is it possible to make floating islands, probably. Will it be efficient? You're better off making powered platforms (you can sell the blueprints for revenue and still keep your floating glory)."

  7. I hope it will be like no man's sky where there are entire ecosystems with different plants and animals or even intelligent npc, I don't want it to be just players. :(

"The developers said there will be aliens--well, animals-- and they'll most likely be superficial active or  active (I borrowed a leaf from your book Kiklix). They just don't know if it will be ready in time for the Alpha."

  8. "Good day. After some eight hours of work, I'm glad to announce to everyone that The Aether has its own website. I sincerely encourage everyone to have a look at this beautiful piece of web data. As always, any suggestions and thoughts will be deeply appreciated.

Don't be bothered by the ads. Once Alpha launches, Beta is well underway, or I find we have enough members, I'll pay to move the site to the Premium Plan. Right now, I don't think it's cost effective to pay $12 per month for something that's basically still in its cosmetic stage. I'll be expecting your feedback. Thanks.

  9. That's why I said that the name change may be something that has a negative backfire and should be costly to be executed, material wise that is. Like, requiring some hardware to be built which are fried after the name change is done, thus, the whole operation costs a lot to be carried out, let alone, by someone of integrity who won't sell you out on your new name.

"That sounds a whole lot better."

  10. Hmm, maybe a sorta "hacking" specialty for people to hide their names, but the faciaal reconstruction should be a medical thing. Think of people running a "witness protection" service. You don't have to create a new account or a new character. You only need to change your name and appearence. A big org's leader should not do that, cause that would collapse the organisation itself, due to him not being recognisable as the leader at that point due to legal reasons. Possibly, the DNA/Player ID could be used by people with a "Tracking" skill to find you down, so your DNA should be a form of ID many orgs would need for you to enter their higher echelon. If you were to betray them, nothing would save you by Bounty Hunters, with, PERHAPS, a very costly material wise Gene Treatment solution to change the Character's DNA/ID on the server. That would give players inentive to specialise into being medics with a chance of high profit on running such services.

"Slow down, Captain! Hacking and tracking will be really intense, but, the game shouldn't be made easy for people to do commit crimes and get away. Only smart people succeed in that and smart people think and plan."

  11. Well, it would also make said "Plastic Surgeon" viable in-game, due to people might be going after your very name if you were to betray an organisation. With that, they should also lose track of you in a Friends List. That's some deep undecover stuff right there. Why create a new character? Plastic Surgeon can help with that. Perhaps with a "DNA" sample acting as an identification of your character's ID on the server. If the enemy has you in their databases, then, good luck withe infiltration going anywhere.

"Wonderful! Espionage would just be more interesting then. But, the changing of names should be present or the plastic surgery is all for naught. What do you think?"

  12. Well the further something is the less real time it is.  The lock on fighting mechanics may be able to adjust for this but not sure how something like shooting a ship in orbit from the surface would or even could work.  Your view shows it and you fire but in real time the ship already left for example.

"That depends on what the cannon is firing and the capabilities of the cannon. Something that large should have a zoom in view, or an intelligent long range IFF. Otherwise, it's just a good looking architectural piece to be blown to bits. Secondly, it depends on what the cannon is firing and at what speed. The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. Let's assume that the exterior of the planet's outer atmosphere is 300 miles. That means it would take the laser 0.00161290323 seconds to reach space. And lasers are known to have broken the record of lightspeed: read this article. However, if it was a solid projectile, it would of course take longer."

  13. Thats not "when the orbit is too high", but okay, that makes more sense.

"The point is that, an object within the gravitational field of a larger body won't be subject to the same strain as on object trying to enter the gravitational field from the outside. That's why satellites, though fragile maintain their structural integrity, in most cases, till the end of their lifespan. A probable factor could be that they orbit within or just outside of the earth's atmosphere. Both locations are well within the earth's gravitational field--an asteroid coming from outer space: not so much.

    I'm glad you understand."

  14. trees sit pretty comfortably very deep in our gravity well and arent being ripped apart by gravitational forces of earth.

What kind of gossimer strands are you using for bullets? :P

"Depending on the size of the object, I mean. Take for instance, comets/meteroids/asteroids that explode/fragment even before they reach the earth's outer atmosphere. A good example is what happens between Io and Jupiter for instance."
