  1. The list of names idea was just up there ↑

Not really the same idea. In mine the name chosen would be the permanent name. The first to discover/claim it would be the one to pick a name from the list. Then that's the planets name forever. It sounds ridiculous to me that a planets name would constantly change. Ownership and control changes sure but not the name.

  2. I just feel like it shouldn't be left in players hands. Now I'm usually not one to claim OMG MY IMERSIONS!! with stuff but yeah would MUCH prefer to have planet names that actually fit the universe.

Maybe as a compromise the Dev can make a HUGE list of names and then when the planet gets claimed/discovered w/e the player can choose one from the list.

  3. no seriously guys, spaceships wont be premade fully scripted meshes, and most of it, you ll be living inside

so if you are happy with a sspaceship built in minecraft, and have enough time and imagination to animate it with your own dreams, thats good for you, then go back on  minecraft right now

and dont reply to a pre alpha game mechanic topic if your dont understand what pre alpha or mechanic means

Well to be fair its also the pre alpha forums of a KS project by a small indie Dev studio. There's a limit to what they can do. Also take into consideration the type of game they are making. Some mechanics and features might not fit the vision of the project.

Also if you're going to suggest ideas and ask for things, then you open yourself to have others state their opinions on your ideas. So its not really good form to get personal and condescending when others don't agree that your idea is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

  4. Don't see the issue with that function. Although if talking about a large ship like a cruiser or battleship I don't think all guns should be able to fire all time at that same target due to positioning and such. I mean would be rather cheesey IMO if you have a gun turret on the ships right side and your target is on the left and your gun turret fires through your own ship?

So yeah the function is something that could likely be done with the LUA but it should also respect physics and line of sight.

  5. As far as scripting weapons fire, is it expected that in times of war a commercial hub is always going to have players manning the anti-ship batteries just in case there's an attack?

Automation would also have it's vulnerabilities with the future hacking mechanics that'll be introduced. It would be a bad idea to build a fully automated facility when a skilled hacker may be able to shut it down himself. That would be a result of competing organizations trying to gain an upper hand, of course.

I don't think its unreasonable at all to expect miners and such to have combat capable allies and friends with them. Want to mine and gather resources alone that's fine but do so at your own risk and be ready to defend yourself. But bottom line this being an MMO I don't see anything wrong with the expectation that some activity's will require groups. Like others said above automation takes out the interplay between players and thats bad because again its an MMO, the whole point or rather a major point is in fact relying on and interacting with other players.

  6. If the Dev was going for a full economics simulator game then sure automate away. But that doesn't seem like the game they are building. There still has to be reason to actually PLAY the game and not just input numbers and wait for the result.

Combat especially would be a HUGE mistake to automate. I mean how would that even work? You just stand near an enemy and your rifle shots and finds targets on its own...? That sounds fun?

  7. Greetings all. Just discovered this project when someone posted the link to the KS page on another KS project I've backed and been following called Crowfall. Really looking forward to that game BUT my roots are in sci-fi based games and sandbox MMOs and been looking for a new place to call home so to speak since SWG went belly up. Kind of a big sci-fi nerd in general whether its video games, movies or TV shows.

Haven't pulled the trigger on backing yet, still getting info and getting a feel for the Dev but so far I like what I'm seeing and hearing. I'm really liking the old school sandbox vibe with the Devs own personal touches to it. Adding their own flavor to stuff and not just rehashing cliché ideas and tropes. To me its the little details and things that makes a game really stand out above others.

So yeah looking forward to learning more about this project and maybe even becoming a backer.

  8. People who hate Star Wars? *shrug*

I would really like to see something like this. I also have some elements I'd like to see so I can totally relate.

People who hate Star Wars shouldn't be taken seriously anyways. :P

But yeah seems pretty much common sense to me to have various types of land travel we can build.

  9. As long as the Devs are honest and transparent about their reason for making choices they do I don't think people will be as put off by having their pet features delayed.  They clearly laid out their timeline to add the feature. If they would have said, "yeah maybe we'll add it later if we have time or money or hopefully its in the plans" then be very concerned but nope they stated the feature is part of the plan and they want to put it in but it'll just come after other features.

Like said earlier the foundation or base of the game is most important then can build on that. So yes the "ground game" IMO is the base, get that running, get ground structure building and voxels working then the space stuff can come. Besides by the time they do get to ships and CvC the experience gained from developing the earlier parts of the game will be of great benefit to the later parts.

  10. Found some of the unfo on the wiki, and here is how it sounds like it'll work.

Territory Units (TU's) are what will allow an organization to claim an area. Once that TU is in place, seems like that org will unilaterally get to decide how that zone will work. Laws, building rights, mining rights, etc. This makes sense from a "we want players to be able to build civilizations" standpoint to prevent random players from walking into your metropolis and turning it into swiss cheese with sphere voxel deletion, or crashing their ship into your base.

This also makes it sound as though in a hex with a TU, unauthorized players won't be able to edit terrain at all, so no mining or digging, no greifing whatsoever.

But before you pvp folks flip out over this, I don't thing TU's will be safe zones, i bet structures can be attacked and damaged, just not built or edited by outsiders. So you won't be able to walk in and delete the wall to my vault, but i'm willing to bet you could shoot it up and eventually destroy components that can be locked onto. We might see a system like rust where attackers can damage strictures, but it would take a good ammount of time and resources to break through defenses. A seige should take long enough that an all-nighter can't undo enough work to shrek people who have day jobs.

Good info. Yeah with what we know so far seems like theres some room to have things to prevent/minimize the 4am raids and have it be organic ie not solely relying on stuff like timers and prearranged battles.  Use of force fields and turrets, scripted defenses are all things that could be put in place.

Besides having WoO -Windows of Opportunity whereby structures are only vulnerable during certain times, isn't the end of the world and have been used quite often to great effect. I mean even SWG back in the day, IMO one of the better sandbox games to exit (before the killed it) had WoO on base raids where it could only be destroyed during certain times.

  11. Speaking from experience with another indie Dev KS project ie Crowfall, I can tell you that they simply can't include everything in the base package. There are some things that either have to wait or have to wait until they get funded. I think having it as one of the first stretch goals speaks to how much they do want to include that part of the game.

Besides 2 years is a long time like other said and they will continue to raise money beyond the KS campaign. The could also start making and the game find out that certain parts weren't as difficult as they thought so varies other parts will get more iteration time. Can also go the other way and stuff then get pushed back and delayed. I just think if you go in willing to follow and support a project like this you have to just roll with the punches and not to get excited about stuff, as well as not get too apathetic either.
