  1. There is *always* going to be a time when there are players on, so the only thing you can do is pick the time with the lowest server population. in Eve, it was (is?) the ozzies that got hammered, right in the middle of their prime play-time hours. Speaking as a software dev with a 24/7 server infrastructure, you're always going to have to balance the requirements of patches/fixes/updates and operational uptime. In games it's not so bad, and you can usually rely on a single backup power supply to cope if external power fails, but if our network lost power for even a second, we'd be in serious trouble, so we have backup UPS, Generators, and even a backup power line if it's needed (never been used yet). DU's servers are going to be of a similar size to Eve's I would imagine, so the backup power requirements would not be inconsiderable.
  2. I'm not going to say I was a T******st (because who'd say that on a forum... hey FBI, stick me on another watchlist please), but I was. In Eve me and a bunch of friends became freedom fighters, our cause (because you have to have one) was to gain the release of a subjugated race, and boy did we play the part. Never stay still, attack the unsuspecting, cause chaos, hit normal Joes, hell, hit the high value targets if you think you have an opening, make the white knights come to the aid of their vassals, then have a pop at them if you can, and then? you run, because running keeps you alive. You're never going to have the shiny ships they have (unless you have an extra source of income they can't find), you're probably not going to have the intel they do, and even if you do, always assume they have more than you, and that every plan is compromised from the start, because some will be. Hit em hard, hit em fast, then fade. IMHO. Now if you want to be a spy, and do things all shady like, then go for it, just don't call yourself a Warrior.
  3. I can't tell you how to run a corp, unless you want to be a Terrorist / Freedom Fighter I was Vicarrah, Combat Pilot for the Peoples Front of Minmatar, later Matriarch of the Tahiri, Member of the High Council of the Ushra-Khan, and between half a dozen of us nutters, we started the Ammarrian / Freedom Fighter war I wonder if Rodj Blake is going to turn up here, he usually seems to pop up in the same places as me Anyway, I played Eve for the (back then) small community and open playstyle, something it lost as it grew past the first thousand or so players, as people powered their way into bigger and better spreadsheets ships. I hope the diversity that DU brings will be able to engender the same sort of community spirit and story creation that Eve had originally. As to everyone else that's welcomed me here, Thanks Vic
  4. From a crusty old veteran of many dashed hopes and desires. I was Vicarrah in Eve (beta and the first 5 years or so, transferred her to someone else after that), and have been either Vicarrah or Vicomt in many other games since. If you know me, shout out, if you don't, I'm pleased to meet you all. Being a software developer during the day gives me some insight into what's being built here, and I applaud the devs for taking the "open architecture" route they seem to be heading for, give people tools, and as long as they have fun doing it, you're doing something right. I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops, and if it works, I'll probably end up sinking FAAAAAAAAAAAR too many hours into it. (yeah, really too many, 1000+ hours on KSP f.ex.) can I throw my money at you yet please?
