  1. Highrises and underground bases need elevators. Mine shafts, too, if it's intended to dig into considerable depth for rare materials. And if there's elevators, the code's probably going to be reusable for movements at arbitrary angles, i.e. subways on a straight path.

  2. Eh, guilds will probably set up tiny vault constructs in the safezones of the respective planets* and do things via bookkeeping and wealth transfers between the planetary vaults, regardless of locality of the trade. Kind of like your current bank account works, the money is anywhere but close to you or the merchant. Yet if you go into the supermarket and buy things, it still works and everyone's happy.

(*: If there's none, it'll happen all around Alioth's one.)

  3. I'd prefer the EVE system. If you're not aggressed, insta-byebye, if you are aggressed, some modest timer until you go poof. Anything beyond that gets casual unfriendly, and you want those people, since they're going to make the majority of the playerbase, which you obviously want to be and keep as large as possible for the game to survive longterm.

Yea, god forbid someone's buying this game based on things advertised on the store page, just to suddenly be faced with idiotic conditions that weren't mentioned before. So either you suck it up, or you don't get to do it.

  5. I did mention these rose-tinted glasses, right? Some people have romanticized views about how certain things are supposed to go or be, regardless of the subject. Eventually reality sets in and they go "well shit".

If the universe is fully procedural and quasi infinite, I mean sure, have a go at a month long space travel, going for that really far off planet, for the sake of breaking some suspect record or roleplaying some weird fantasy.  If not, people should stop advocating that this idea supposing to become a general rule is actually good, because it is definitely not.

But anyway, last I remember, JC mentioned in one of the Youtube videos that the in-game universe is going to expand gradually.

  6. No, that's just rose-tinted wishy-washy high brow game concept stuff, that'll never end up happening. Realistically, any interstellar travel penalties in form of time will happen during the building stage of the spaceship involved in it all (i.e. making it hard to build). Making a bunch of players sit on their asses for two weeks on a spaceship is a dumb as hell move for any game company that advocates fun.

I mean, most people who play EVE are masochists, and even they want to slit their wrists doing cross-galaxy travel. And that just takes a fraction of a day.

  7. The issue with point 2 can be avoided by requiring a password while linking the profile hosting the hash. Either make the user specify one when starting the whole process, or have the third party service communicate one to the user initiating said process. If a hostile person tries to bind your profile to his account, he'd need to supply it for it to go through.

The problem with refining materials as a form of compressing them is that you probably can't reverse the process which is a problem if you needed to raw material.

I'd figure there's quite a few raw materials you don't want in that form. In the case of material not being destructible, the ability to turn dirt into a more compact refined material with a click or two would be interesting, before needing to haul it away to empty your inventory.

That said, if material were actually destructible, that'd be weird, because a guild could create a whole huge underground city and it'll go completely unnoticed.

  9. Took me a while to track that one down. In that devdiary, 1m3 of iron and 0.2m3 of coal turned into 1m3 of steel. So 0.2m3 of volume disappeared.

The thing I'm wondering about is how far this goes then, and if any sort of material can be compacted significantly that way. Say if I can stick plain dirt into a furnace and create stone out of it (for brick walls or whatever), if there's a significant reduction in volume in that process, and if it doesn't take long or eat significant resources (if at all), I can circumvent/optimize my way around hauling significant amount of excavated material away when building a batcave or something.

  10. How is this going to be handled? In other games, it's usually for X units of ore you stick into the refining mechanic, you get Y units of refined material and that's that. That usually comes with an implied inventory space reduction. Say if I stick 10 units of iron ore into the refiner, I get one unit of iron out of it, or something, and nothing else. What used to take up 10 slots now only uses 1. Given that with the voxel stuff, everything's measured in volume, will it still follow the same old mechanics, or will refining result in waste material you get rid of? I.e. for 10m3 of low quality iron, you'd get say 3m3 of refined iron, but also 7m3 of useless cinder. How I understood it, there's different material qualities to which you can refine.

  11. Eh, if it's part of a pledge, I guess that's that. Otherwise it'd probably be wiser to save it mostly until the supporter packs are available. If you have a mild interest in the game and YouTube picked up on it, then keeps shoveling these mostly identical interviews up onto you, without anything new (said packs), you might start dismissing videos, which YouTube again picks up on and when there's something new (guess what), it'll fly under your radar. That YouTube metadata also influences your Google searches.
