  1. Sociopaths? Splendid! <_<

Good thing there are other sandbox MMOS out there that attract less or no sociopaths thanks to their well thought game mechanic.

It's not a question of being a carebear (to each his own playstyle) but rather of being griefed/ganked by your average 12years old moron (no offense, just a stereotype but somehow true), without consequences, just because they can.

I think I'm done here, have fun!

  2. Well, it's really simple. The punishment will come after the "crime". In other words, if a group of players decides to grief a faction's outpost, that faction will send out its fleet and level the griefers' crib. It's really that simple :P

Maybe it would be simple if everybody would be more or less on the same level power wise but what about when faction A is 10x or more faction B? Faction B could ally itself or something but zergs will always rule at the end.

Imo it would be so much better if there would be a game mechanic that would actually make consider pros and cons of attacking someone form a strategically point of view and not just for the lulz of it.

Balancing a game play well is far away from "simple" and something most MMOs are still trying to achieve.

  3. I've never played EVE but I've read/heard lots about it and seen many vids and I concluded it's not for me. So if DU will be too close to EVE it won't be for me either. No problem there, to each his own game.

I understand the nature of an MMO/sandbox risk/reward etc. but I don't understand when trolling/griefing/harassing (and most important ganking) is not only allowed but encouraged, even if indirectly. I know those things can't be totally eradicated but at least they can be dampened. And to leave the player community to self-regulate is madness imo, as zergs will prevail every time.

I'm a casual player and play for fun. Fun! I encounter enough jerks in RL and in my job, and to have them in  my games as well... no thanks.

I will still follow DU development and see how it evolves.

It's a great project, but like some will be driven away by the subscription model I will be driven away should the game play be too loose.

I know, I know... I go play the Sims now... ^_^

Thanks for opening the discussion GIJhen. This very subject was on my mind as well.

  4. I agree they are two different games (never understood the apple/oranges thing, after all they are both fruit so it should be good j/K :) ) and that SC won't have proper crafting/creation as DU will. However it will have tweaking/overclocking of components which coupled with the modularity of the ships should be interesting enough.

As for the flying mechanic hopefully it will improve, it isn't finished yet. And I'm not so familiar with Second Life but that's even far away  than apples and oranges imo.

  5.

Maybe it's the alcohol or the voices.

Or the voice of alcohol? :P

I'm equally hyped for both games. Last SC presentation was really convincing imo and DU looks even more promising, which is a lot.

I'm waiting for Infinity: Battlescape by I-Novae Studios. Smaller scale (solar system) and centered on pvp if I'm not mistaken, which is not exactly my thing btw, but still worth checking out.

    Edit:

about Battlescape maybe it would be more exactly to say small focus instead of small scale because iirc the solar system will be in scale, so pretty huge, but  it won't have infinite star systems. And "small" is quite relative here. ;)

  6. Sorry if I sound dumb in my insistence about this topic, but I want to make absolutely sure.

If DU will get on Steam will it be on Steam only or both on Steam and the website?

I'm not sure that it should really matter. I have played a lot of MMO's through steam, and I still have to make an account on the MMO's website. I usually also have to download the game from the launcher that downloaded from steam.

For me, it's an extra step in what I have to do to play the game. On the other hand, steam would help get it even more attention. So, it is up to the devs to determine what they feel is best for the game and community.

I'm not sure I understand properly. Afaik you can add non-Steam games to its library and play them through the Steam layout anyway, but others require the Steam client with all the bells and whistles, if only for the updates and DRM protection.

Few games, like i.e. Kerbal Space Program and No Man Sky are available from Steam but also from their own site the first, and from GoG the second.

I guess that KS backers will get the full released game regardless of Steam?

  7. Yes, 100 players seem to be the limit, per instance. But depending on need there are supposed to be several instances at once accommodating more players, seamless between one another. But again, how exactly it will work if ever it's unknown at the moment. And one of the major obstacles seems to be the  net code.

  8. Well, I am lucky I am retired and single now so I  guess I could go back to some sleepless gaming nights. I managed it when I was working and married and I have some nice memories from that time. Should it happen again I wouldn't mind as I miss a great game in which I can immerse myself without even noticing the hours passing by. ;)

  9. I searched a bit here and on google about DU and Steam but didn't find anything, in case please point me to relevant thread.

I don't intend to discuss the pros and cons of Steam, I simply would like to know if DU will be needing the Steam platform or if it will be independent. Thanks.

  10. Hello all,

this game looks amazing and I would like to learn more about it and follow the development.

I am a long time space sim fan and of other genres as well. Lately my gaming time has dwindled to few hours a week.

English is not my first language so please excuse the mistakes, sometimes even the spell checker doesn't help. ;)
