By Civilisation do you mean organisations or cities built with heaps of players inhabiting them?
They're both fairly similar in outcomes, resources and time are lost in either case. An org could grow back a lot faster (Depending somewhat on the leadership) while the city would take a lot more to rebuild, if it wasn't scrapped by the victors/survivors.
Now, Say COPS and HMMR go to war against each other, they're spending a crapton of resources and time fighting each other, this can give a smaller group like DUA the advantage it needs to build up there resources while the two larger orgs are at war. War could easily mean a complete powershift in organisations/civilisations.
(Examples of orgs are just examples, not implying anything).

I can see further down the line in the life of DU, maybe a year or so, people having cracks at building Dyson's Spheres (Or more likely rings). I hope we get to this stage, huge organisations working to create this. Wether there is any actual benefit you get from building one or not I'd love to see on built.

While they're not asteroids something akin to the Warhammer 40k Space Hulks would be awesome to encounter while traveling around in deep space. A wealth of minerals and maybe some tech if you're lucky.

Politics will be heaps of fun, seeing how we interact with each other. And from reading these forums you can start to see some of these politics come into play already, alliances and coalitions being formed and people getting opinions of others.

I'm guessing how big you can span your empire depends on the people you have. If you have a large group with dedication and a good chain of command it could last a fairly long while but could easily collapse due to inactivity and members not playing their part.

For me it was the rest of HMMR but after having a look at DU I'm interested.
One big factor is the scale of the game. Groups will be able to control sectors and fly around in huge capital ships and it really appeals to me.

Hey all!
I'm Dark, I come from New Zealand and I was dragged into Dual by a group of friends. This looks to be a really fun and promising game, and I'm afraid I'll lose many hours to the universe.
I come from Hammertime Gaming and we hope to be able to grow a bit more here and meet some like minded people. I hope to meet all of you ingame, wether it be in friendliness or hostality.

Invetories can be built back up. A loss of skill sounds like a good incentive to not die.
