Agree with 90% of the post. Especially the part about players going to extremes to push the boundaries of the game. I too played EVE, quite successfully (we paid for 21 accounts with in-game earned money), for many years. My partner and I found every opportunity to eke out every last bit of ore in any way possible. If you make automation an option, no manual miners will have a chance.
Also agree with Singularity, fix the scanner and the detector to work properly. Even at maximum skills, they don't work well.
Most of all: fix the game so that mining and terraforming don't produce "pending operation", "operation failed", and massive lag spikes. It makes mining a huge waste of time on all but the most uncrowded of days. The delays and lag are horrendous. If the developers want a large number of players in this game, stabilizing this portion of the game will be crucial.
