For anyone who's not aware, you can download a free 3D sketch program called Google Sketchup so that you can start designing your constructs. It's free and easy to use with a very small learning curve. Check it out and show everyone your designing skills. There It's also a 3D warehouse that you can download as upload other peoples work. So Check that out as Well to get some inspiration. I'll post both links below.

Just be advised that modeling things in 3D applications like Blender, Sketchup, etc, do not translate properly to working with voxels, but of course those programs could be used for concept phase. On the other hand, good old paper and pencil can make the job done too ;)

I think Zbrush resembles voxels a bit better then a sketch tool or hard modeling tool like blender.

You will find a 45 day trial on that page.

Although I'm sure someone on the internet has found a way to bypass that. ;)

Zbrush is a digital sculpting program.

If you can imagine it you can build it.

It takes some getting used to. But in my opinion it gives faster results if you are not trained to work with programs such as blender and 3ds.

Zbrush has a huge learning curve, I'd suggest Blender for everyone that wants to "have a go" at modeling.

There are thousands of tutorials on YouTube for beginners to advanced, and the Blender community is excellent, always happy to help new people!

Oh I agree. I moved from blender to Zbrush.

I just wanted to add Zbrush because although it takes some learning. It is in my opinion a lot more flexible. No need to worry about topology etc.

Want a wing? Just grab the surface and pull and sculpt and so on. Although hard surface modeling is indeed a bit more difficult.

But options are always a good thing. ;)

Well, ZB has nothing to do with voxel :) And yeah, learning curve is soo huge that by the time a person starts to use tools included there fluently, that person would become hired in a gaming company and forget about voxels in DU ;)

But...3D-Coat is actually using voxels for sculpting, so someone could use that -> http://3dcoat.com/home/

I know that. I said resembles because of the flexibility. You can add and subtract shapes and so forth.

I didnt say it was easy either.

Just wanted to add another option to the pool of options.

Eventhough I feel basic Zbrush is a lot easier then blender.

  • 4 years later...

I feel like the main impressive factor in seeing an amazing voxel creation is that the person spent time and effort making it...out of voxels. While I can appreciate a beautiful 3D model converted into voxels I feel like it would be somewhat less impressive as an achievement
