Can your make a floating city

Yes and no.

Based on real life physics, you could do this. All you would need is to put the city into an 'orbit'

Now, how you can achieve this in the game may be subject to opinion and it also depends on how high you mean when you say "floating" If you mean just above the surface, you will need lift exactly enough to counter the F=gMm/r^2. Assuming we don't have anti-gravity, that would mean a lot of really strong thrusters operating around the clock burning fuel to keep the city afloat.

Assuming anti-gravity, than of course, it should be possible.

If astrophysics come into play of orbiting, then you can have an orbital base in orbit around the planet and just make it look like a city where the buildings rise up away from the city as it arcs around the planet.

But but but

if there's no floating cities, where would I go to capture rebels and attempt to persuade my long lost son to help me conquer the galaxy????

In all seriousness, sure you could do it. Whether it's worth it, or you have the in-game capability to do so is another matter entirely. (talking about power/thrust requirements Ghezra mentioned above.)

Just make sure to build them less than 1 kilometer off the ground because territory control won't help you protect it any higher than that.

Actually, it's possible to claim a bubble in space.

After rereading the article, we won't know how space bubble territories actually work until they release a Devblog on it.

I was also previously under the impression that space was not going to be 1 kilometer from the ground, but reading the phrase "partitioning the sphere completely" shows my impression was incorrect.

So I say to my previous statement, "nevermind"

Dont see any sence in floating city. It will cost more, it will be easy to destroy it, and I dont see any advantages of this. But floating city can be useful on planets with high atmospheric pressure, and where nothing can survive on it surface. So planets like Venus can have floating city.

Something like this sounds like it would fit right in. It depends, however, on if the game manages to have a decent physics engine. You could easily do it without physics, however it would be unrealistic. Especially in a game that is planning on being somewhat realistic.

it should be possible as we do have the anti-grav tech however the power requirements might be a bit high for anyone to do until we get better more efficient reactors latter in the game but I could see them working in this kind of game though more as a in planet space station or to defend itself from a hostile ground (and fully land based attacks for the most part)

Actually what I'd like to see in the game is a city that floats.....   on water.

There could be resources (like hydrocarbons, fish or algae) beneath a body of water and you would need a floating platform to exploit them.

That would be cool.

That would indeed be pretty nice. However, I'm more interested in an actual floating city. Perhaps someone manages to find a nice ratio of mass and thrust required to propel and make a city float via thrusters.

But what if it's like minecraft where you just place a tall stack of blocks build what you want to build then remove the supporting blocks and BOOM! You got a floating city :P

Except it would probably crash. :D

But, I think you just gave me an idea for a game of Jenga in DU on a planetary scale. :D

This will work at the moment.

They said this in a devblog article somewhere.

They are not planning to simulate physics at this level because it is too much taking on server CPU. It would prevent the game to host 1000+ players at the same place.

So, you could just do that.

Beware, Territorial Control Unit are planned to extend only 1km above ground level.

im in. I don't care if we are "enemies" in game....you best invite me to this lol

Of course!

But only if you bring several ships with lots of materials and resources... to help with building the Jenga of course. Oh, and no armed escort either. You might scare the other attendees away.
