Remote processing

According to the promotional videos, there will be a limit to the range within which you can run LUA scripts. So that for example if you want to build automated mechanisms, somebody has to stand next to them or they won't work. I'd like to see the possibility to connect two blocks so that if someone is standing next to the other one, their processing power can be used to run the other one regardless (or perhaps regarding, based on item level) the distance.

There is a lot of talk about drones, which would very much depend on this. However, I don't know if drones planned by people were short or long ranged ones. The cases which I'm most worried about would be guided missiles or a larger ship drones which would immediately leave any kind of local processing range when deployed due to the larger scale of things in space.

I assume that the range on automation will be relatively large, I don't think you'll have to be sitting directly next to something to run automation. This could be as much of a hardware issue as a balance issue.

I believe the primary concern would be automated defenses or fighters that people just leave all over the place, or automated mining drones that keep working when youre offline. Both of which would be unbalanced and potentially game breaking.

This is speculation, but here how I see it.

A LARGE part of this revolves around SENSORS.

A sensor can detect your presence and activate a LUA script on your client.

It could open a door, fire a turret, or do anything you wish.

The range is specified by the size of the sensor.

Additionally, a sensor could be used for communications between constructs. You could script a "broadcast packet" to be transmitted by one construct that says "Value=1", and the sensor on a second construct could pass that value to a second DPU, to be acted upon.

Depends, the "range" may be like 10 Kilometers, with a tech related skill that boosts that signal or gear specialised for Droe Operators to gain range.

Who knows, the Devs can go about it any way they want, the thing is that specialisations can emerge that way.

I'd hate to have to specialize for something just to be able to use a single long range device. And then again, if you can upgrade the signalling of your suit then why not build a real freaking antenna. :D

Well, an engineer would build said antenna or quantum emitter or w/e sci-fi FutureSpace tech there may be in the game, the thing is, it should be something that you need actual equipment for them and schematics that can be researched and upgraded for longer ranges.

I know how to drive a car, I don't know how to create one tho, same logic can be appled in the game ;)

I hear a lot about automation but after the interview yesterday I highly doubt it. Not only that he said you have to be pretty much next to the Lua Unit for it to work.. They want to have less automation even no automated turrets.

On the Kickstarter promo video they mention that you can have automated turrets but someone has to sit nearby. Which is totally reasonable on its own but my point is that can I run an automated turret 10km away from me if I have some kind of a connection to a control panel and I'm standing next to it.

Odd the Interview Yesterday said no to auto turrets.

Odd the Interview Yesterday said no to auto turrets.

That's the point of having guys with specialisations tho.

A default player won't have range on their DPU units.

If a guy specialised heavily in Computers (example of a speciality), maybe they can have a particular part of their armor's slot, like a utility device, that only THEY can operate, that provides them with range on controlling DPU units.

I mean, that would make the game interesting for some people who want to be like technomancers, ordering an swarm of drones to do their bidding, but having their stamina bar go down heavily in the process, or requiring heavily cyborgification to cope with such a tech.

It would make for "achievements" in the game, when a guy dedicated so much time to become a cyborg in order to control a swarm of drones. So yeah, they could be given a means to increase their range of influence on DPUs.
