Ambient Noise

I think that ambient noise in almost every environment is a must (with applicable volume adjustments in the settings menu of course).

 

For example, the ambient hum throughout a ship as it travels alone through space:

 

 

 

Or the ambient hum of medical equipment:

 

 

 

When I look at the forest screenshots, I think of the sound of birds and insects chirping and buzzing away:

 

 

 

The desert has ambient sound:

 

 

 

Even prop computer consoles can come to life with a bit of background noise:

 

 

 

 

Does anyone have any other examples of background noise one might expect to hear?

i never thought about this....as I tend to play my own music while playing mmo's unless im in a teamspeak channel.

I'd love to hear your ship making noises as you pilot it through the void, but thought I heard Dan screaming out in space for a second. Maybe was just the airlock or something...

I actually play these 12 hour sounds in the background when I am building spaceships in other games. It helps to create immersion which for me, feeds the creative juice.

Excellent idea yamamushi, I really agree with you that a bit of ambient sound that matches the environment can go a long way to feeling the experience.

 

I may not be exactly on track here. While I do hope we can use the command units, dpu, or a sound block to hook some ambient music into. I dont want to get into the imported stuff or not, so by chance NQ will have sound assets we could pick from.

While scrolling through this I clicked on the Nostromo ambient engine noise video Yamamushi posted, forgot to turn it off and then clicked the Graveyard video that Saffi posted. The 2 sounds playing together, made the perfect background for flying your ship close to an alien ruin... at least that's what I pictured when hearing this.

Personally when I think of cathedrals in space, and religion in general, in scifi. I tend to think of much darker stuff like:
