Atmospheric radar and space radar. Why can't we connect them both to the same chair?

For the same reason we'll get different weapons in 3 years when atmo pvp is a thing. There doesn't need to be a different element set for each environment. They could just change the values as you move through the atmosphere and have actual object detection so they dont fire straight through objects. NQ never does things the smart way.

It because NQ, just like many developers that came before, and doubtlessly many that will come after fail to undestand "tv space opera realism" that start trek episodes don't translate into fun gameplay for most involved.

Galaxy Quest puts it quite well:

  • [Gwen and Jason encounter the chompers]

Gwen DeMarco : What is this thing? I mean, it serves no useful purpose for there to be a bunch of chompy, crushy things in the middle of a hallway. No, I mean we shouldn't have to do this, it makes no logical sense, why is it here?

Jason Nesmith : 'Cause it's on the television show.

Gwen DeMarco : Well forget it! I'm not doing it! This episode was badly written!

It is probably some poor attempt at forcing the 'community driven' part of the game, by making simple things require multiple players to work.

Only problem is that one of the key requirements for a healthy community, is that you make a game that players actually want to play.

And having someone sit in a chair doing nothing but watching a radar screen is not exactly fun.

And there is also the minor problem of how exactly this radar officer is supposed to effectively communicate what he sees to the pilot in-game. Not a big deal in reality using some 3rd party voice solution, but it is yet another example of how the ramifications of features and limitations in the game has not been thought out.

Because NQ doesn't want general purpose ships and general purpose players, they want specialized ships and specialized players.

They still think players like to play games where they have boring jobs.

Thats RL... The place we are trying to get away from with games

It exists in hopes that the artificial limitation would make planet->space shuttles a viable niche.   Also making stations into a viable hangar niche as well, for layovers between ship types.

And if players don’t it means that players will have to choose between being target practice (a sitting duck, a fish in a barrel, or similar) in one of the two (atmosphere/space), after atmospheric combat is implemented.

doubtful that this game will get numbers back up to support that.

especially considering people have other games to choose from, that don’t rely on telling players to “be vulnerable” and “you have no choice”.
