How do I turn on symmetry mode when building?

You can turn it on for an element by looking at the element and pressing U key. It will highlight yellow and when you place the other element it will highlight yellow when it is in the right place

For voxels, you can build half of your ship, copy it with the voxel select tool (default 7, ctrl+c) and then pressing R to mirror it before placing it on the other half. (Use T to inset it properly so it lines up)

 

Along with ^ what Haunty mentioned above, you have your bootleg symmetry mode.

When the selection is correctly aligned, use arrow keys and pgup and pgdown to place precisely.

 

This will help prevent premature balding.

And then curse loudly when the 'paste' decides to bend/crimp/wack all the blocks down the middle of the ship of the two halves. With or without shift, one side is gonna get jacked.
