Majestic
This always creates a load of forum threads as soon as a server/shard goes down. With so many different time zones being on the game at once picking a time to go offline will be a sensitive issue. More so around the time new content is introduced as some countries are going to be asleep when it goes live. How long do you think server maintenance on a shard of this scale will take once it's a live game, and how often will they be needed? I know we're a long way off worrying about this but it will come up sooner or later.
Anaximander
As long as it has to take. You want a game that runs crispy fine 6 days out of the week, or you want a game that runs crappy 6.5 days out of a wekk? Plus, new content will be introduced on player's side, like new Elements to craft. It won't be a world thing installation.
Silmerias
Usually, the sandbox servers are under maintenance 1h at noon every days.

Usually yes, but this is a single shard, noon for who? And will the scale of the game mean its offline alot longer than a regular mmo.
Silmerias
Single chard doesn't mean it will handle the process differently, in IT perspective it's changes nothing. Look at EvE / Albion / Perpetuum & co. They all stop at 11am to 12am (depending the Tz)

Infact, processes that are used for DU server maintenance, are probably the same maintenance routines that Google uses. Infact, IT maintenance doesn't change much at all. Ever. All it is is just professionals going in, taking a look at the servers and applying maintenance to the servers that are having problems. They could decide to schedual a time that they need to go in and take a look at these things, or they might not even have to do that, except for updates and larger maintenance. croxis
They might be able to design the servers so that no regular downtime is needed.
Anasasi
I believe the best method is that of the larger entities that already exist, the daily 30 minute - 1 hour downtime. It's effective, lets them see any issues and reset things or roll on hotfixes whenever they need. A lot of people generally hate this because it eats into the game time they have, but it may be an unavoidable situation.Unless of course they do design a system to release patches without downtime, or, atleast minimal downtime. Either way, it will get figured out and we'll find out soon enough.
ostris
I think server downtime may be very minimal. They have spent a lot of time making this game adopt new cloud technologies. One of the best part of cloud tech is the ability to upgrade and make changes without a lose of service. Hopefully they can adopt some of these technologies and keep downtime minimal or eliminate completely.
