I wouldnt like aliens in the game other than wildlife and indirectly affecting things like that. What is so interesting about this game is that it's all shaped by humans. Working together or not, everything will be a direct effect of our actions in this universe. All is connected.

I'd prefer alien fauna and flora, not "sentient" things. A variety of different alien animals would be interesting, different patterns at all. this wouldnt make much of a tactical advantage but i think it would help flesh out the games universe and some lone player gameplay. You could explain the aliens being on multiple planets (i doubt they are going to design enough for each planet) with lore to increase depth.

I agree. I especially like the idea of some hostile fauna. Not a lot, but enough that you have to be on your toes sometimes.

At this point in time... I'd have to say no.  Given what NQ has released thus far on "aliens" it seems there's gonna be just wild fauna/flora (like roaming a planet in NMS) and possibly some unknown source that may or may not be alien.

Stay tuned tho!

I think Elite Dangerous did aliens pretty well XD

Just put super mysterious aliens in the game, make it so you have to do some really un-intuitive thing to get them to show up, and don't tell anyone about it.

I think it would make the most sense that the first time we get in touch with Aliens they are primitive (First bigger Update to the Game / half a Year after launch). Since that has a lower cost for NQ than having to build a really deep Alien-Interaction System. Making them a Survival Mechanic on new Planets in other Systems would add something to the Gameplay while being relatively low cost compared.

Later on (DLC sized Update / maybe 1 Year+ after Launch) I it would be nice ineed to meet Aliens that are technologically and socially advanced far enough to not be only a small Survival Mechanic but even a Diplomatic and a Conflict Mechanic and think and act on a grander Scale of things.

Personally, I would not want to see any aliens in DU that are portrayed as intelligent enough to have a civilization, whether that civilization is primitive or advanced.  I am attracted to DU because the game is about interacting with other players instead of NPC's.  The problem with NPC's is they can only react to what the developers foresee players doing.  Even with well designed NPC's, I often feel frustrated by how limiting they make the game feel.

plants / animals are enough - this game isn't about NPCs and never should be. This game is about player run empires and player run events, not some stupid, repetitive, easy to master, shallow PVE

I agree, real People should always be the Focus of this Game.

But I personally think NPCs can add more Gameplay Elements to the Game and make it feel more alive and richer.

I would say all of the above to the options given, with a few additions...

Primitive and hostile(e.g.stone age)

Whose to say that there aren't races out there at all levels of civilisation? They could be more advanced than us or at a more primitive level. That's not to say that the more primitive species would be hostile, they might welcome (as others have said) interactions with a more developed species. Or, they might be just like humans and want to wipe them out!

Interactive and untouchable

You'd have to have a mix, perhaps some species see themselves above all others (e.g., in a religious type context) and want nothing to do with anyone else.

Quest-givers

I'd put this with the Interactive species.

Hostile to all players and war-able

Diverse and organisation befriending

Or hostile to just some factions of humans, yet wanting to interact with other factions.

The universe is a big place... it will seem very very empty without NPCs to interact with.

Just imagine flying for three days/weeks without seeing another player only to finally see one and find out they are a complete moron who just wants to kill you as you're flying in their bit of space.

I think other players will make the game feel much more alive than NPC's possibly could.  And while DU will extend over a huge space, parts of it will probably be very crowded, so I do not think it will be difficult to find other players to interact with.

Introducing aliens would tend to shift the focus of the game away from the players.  If the effect they have is too inconsequential to do that, then they probably would not worth the effort it took to develop them.  While some people may want them, to me aliens would only detract from the game I want to play.

the universe IS a vast, empty place.....

DU NEVER actually promoted NPCs, so this is clearly NOT the way they go - and every backer here knows and accepts that.

Players should and will populate this universe and make it feel alive.

And why is everyone who protects their border a moron?

I'm not saying that everyone is a moron!

NPCs will add to the background of the universe to give it more depth and feeling. You say that NPCs will make the game shallow... Surely a game with very few interactions with other people because they are so spread out would make a game more shallow?

The players WILL be the main part of the game, but you'll need NPCs to be part of your empire/ark... Otherwise who will you be getting to run the day-to-day elements of the empire you're busy playing? Personally I don't want DU to end up like the sim/game Civilisation (set in space) where I have to control everything on a day to day basis. I'd rather be out there fighting, exploring, trading and having fun.

And you can't say that every backer here knows and accepts that there shouldn't be NPCs! That is just a false syllogism! It is like saying that all dogs have four legs, so all four legged animals are dogs!

Indeed Fenris, you can't expect people to not protect their claims and call them morons for being aggressive. It's a PVP game in many aspects. If you die it's your own fault.

Okay... Let's say that I'm acting as a Trader and I pass through what you are calling your region. Should I assume that I will be attacked without provocation?

What if I have on board items that would help you develop your region? Would not trading with me (rather than killing me) build a universe that feels more alive?

@FenrisWolf

PVE/NPC interactions are ALWAYS shallow - because it's no challange to kill them or interact with them. In a sandbox like DU, players are responsible for depth of gameplay - if they spread out fast then there won't be much interaction. But there are failsafes to prevent such a thing already planned and implemented in DU

To reason with your words: you don't need NPCs to be part of your empire/ark - YOU need them because you can't run an empire yourself / don't know how to do it / can't figure it out yourself / don't want to do that / are used to some generic theme park MMO where everything is just handed to you without the need for work.

to some people, running an empire and organizing stuff is fun - not to you or to me. So what? let them run the empire while you fight....

And to the point you made to zamarus:

No it wouldn't - if it's their playstyle to kill you, the universe is equally alive as it would be when they traded with you. Here they're pirates attacking a convoy and getting away with loot. In some other example the attackers would trade with that guy and find allies - both are equally immersive

You would most likely be sent a warning to state why you're there and depending on your answer you get shot/escorted

I like the thought of shifting dynamics.

Maybe it's a little to complected... but have some aggressive and some friendly...

Maybe a newer patched planet and area with a hostel race that we have to defeat together.

Aliens have long been a subject of speculation and a pillar of science-fiction so I set to wondering if the game-makers finally decide to bring them what would we like them to be

Really though you should have just read the forums. But on a lighter note I'd prefer traces of an extinct or ancient   race. Like ruins

My apologies, I was quite new at the time.

Quite true Lethys, I was ( at the time of writing this ) honestly hoping for a PVE to fight to test the combat system  without looking for a willing partner .

Let's hope that NQ would implement a system for training in alpha

I think there shouldn't be any actuall alien civs, but ruins, and trying to find a great filter and solve the fermi paradox. But i dont have $7000 lying around...

I also was thinking not only alien ruins, but other ruins from failed ark ships
