Ship Building: Hull Frames

 

Building Your Vessel

When building your vessel, you have a choice of multiple type of hulls you can build. Each hull type determines the number of parts you can incorporate inside and outside of the hull, allowing you to create your own ship by design. This game design choice will allow players to have complete control of the size, shape, and design of their space ships while giving passive limits to what they can do.

 

To reach the largest ship avaliable, players are required to buy and trade technological blueprints while mining for minerials. This will estabilish an in-game economy which I will touch on later in the pitch. With 13 different types of hull frames to choose fromes, players will be able to come up with many different combinations of ships. Each part is also modular, meaning players can build ships piece by piece and even place in bulk heads to save personal when the hull is breached.

 

Since ship building is in modular state, players will have to strategically design and build their ships in effort to make the best spaceship avalaible. Make the ship too big, it will take longer to turn and longer to gain speed. Much like modern ship building when it comes to aircraft carriers or frigates, players will have to experiment and find the perfect ship for combat, transporting goods, or mine resources.

 

When an player designs and creates an ship, they may upload a blueprint of the ship if they like, so other players can use their design to build their own ship or they could keep their ship's design a secret while not giving away secrets to opposing empires or pirates. These type of blueprints can fetch a pretty hefty price and must be traded in person since there is no establish market for these type of blueprints. The best place for trading these blueprints would be at the central traders hub or on the black market.

Personal Note: The basic idea is to build out the frame of the ship, the you can add technology onto the ship such as engines, force field generators, power nodes, variety weapons, hanger shielding, command table, computer modules, electronic warfare stations, etc, etc... basically full customization of your ship. Heck you will be able to apply player design skins to your ships you make. Another aspect I want is the ability to have ship classes, allowing for different size ships, some could even allow hanger of multiple fighters which can be piloted by A.I. All in all is the idea founded around making ships fully editable, allowing full customization at the players finger tips.

Sorry, you'll have to build the hull yourself with voxels, or buy some tried and tested hull off the market via a blueprint. You want a super-frame w/e EVE ship you are talking about? You better build it and test it, cause, you know, bleeding damage through elements and stuff. You need the hull and frame to be sturdy.

To the question, there will be templates for building crafts and what-not in Dual Universe. However, I don't believe that slots will be used in the game. DPU's exist to limit the number of working elements in a craft and make sure they work. Not to mention, engine power and capacity will, to a large extent, determine how many things you can load on your craft. As for ship classes: these are going to be player defined. 

Except the developers change their minds and decide to impose ship class restrictions via Core Units, DPU's or any other limitation, it's up to the player base to determine what ship is a frigate, destroyer, cruiser and so on. 

 

You get to define your what's in your list and how you make that list. That's an advantage of emergent game-play.

I can quickly sum up how I feel about this. 

 

NO. 

 

Absolutely not, it will ruin the game. They are trying to make a game with no limits no bounds, just a physics engine, and with 1 implementation you will hinder that. Dont tell me I can build a 3km ship but limits the number of elements on it, thats absurd and unrealistic in reality. If I have a space for it why cant I drop in another battery pack. Need more thrusters, yet I can only install 6. Absurd. 

 

Sure limit me by power or fuel. I can overcome those if I deem it worth it. Thats what will limit your ship sizes. More units means more power and more control, ontop of more mass and space required, in turn requiring more fuel from thrusters. It is the one feature I hated about Planet Explorers. It had a similar build system to what DU is going for, but it was limited. I could stack 4 rotors ontop eachother no problem, but couldnt put more than  ~6 battery packs for energy. 

 

Arbitrary limits like that hinder what you can creativly do, not just functionally. Besides, with massive multi crewed ships you need the freedom. Why have a specialized carrier or a dreadnought if you're gunna limit things like turrets and docking spaces.

Will it be possible to make (Made with voxels and elements.) and save "frames" (using the term in the top post) that you build your self and later on merge them with more "frames" to make a complete construct.  You could for example make a standard drive section that you use on a variety of fighters, then merge the drive section with wing sections and a cockpit section.

It would make streamlining design lines a lot more user friendly. It would also open up more possibilities for trading blueprints.

I see no reason to designate different hull types, because it would only serve to reduce variety in ship design, rather than letting the best designs rise to the top of the markets. 

 

Though I could definitely see blueprints for frames or modular ship parts becoming popular on the markets, because they could speed up the construction process while still allowing for personal customization.

If you mean for modular building of ships, yes. You can make a hull of a certain shape to your liking, save it, then have modular armor pieces made, save them as blueprints and then start mixing and matching to see what you can get before getting down to fine-tuning. In fact, anyone who's aiming for industry, would have to make a stream-lined modular system like that.

@Red_Dirt_Gamer I see this is your first post, so welcome to Dual Universe.  Seeing this post makes me wonder how much you understand the game.  It will allow customization to an extent that is far beyond what you are suggesting.  Implementing your idea would take away the freedom that I find so attractive.

Actually struct on planet will be limit height because the planet will spin and so a struct will spin with the planet as well. And if that struct crash into with something it will boom and blow up the game calculate for collision.

True. I messed up because the initial question was about ships.

Nothing prevents you to dig and build the other way though.
