5,600 backers support subscriptions. Please, please don't compare DU Kickstarter to Star Citizen.

 

I'm a fan of Star Citizen, but the games are very different. And just because SC went viral on Kickstater/internet doesn't mean every good/potentially good game has to in order to be a success.

 

They were both about multiplayer, sci-fi, lore, freedom, space supremacy, spaceships ,trade and raising the bar of the videogame genre at the begining.

 

I don't know why Dual Universe should not go this high knowing how large the PC community is ? This new game has had even more coverage than the previous one

We don't have to explain to you why the Sub model will work out fine, there are 4 or more threads with plenty of content on this subject.

 

Its their game, not our game and not your game. Their call, and most of us support their decision.

I would rather prefer to see EA, Tencent, Ubisoft, Microsoft or even Nexon backing up the game as much as needed to end up with something great...

You are advocating for a publisher to help out and THESE are the publishers you come up with?!

 

Not sure for how long you have followed the genre but none of these publishers are willing to build a game like DU. If any of these publishers are involved DU wont be DU. *insert coin to proceed*

 

EA...Microsoft...Nexon?! Tencent, Ubisoft man if I werent laughing so loud....:P

Electronic Arts : Unravel, Titanfall, Fuse, UFC, Kingdoms of Amalur, Star wars online

Activision : Destiny

Tencent : Blade & Soul, Smite, Monster Hunter

 

The scared publishers is part of the past for most of them, especially after Star Citizen's popularity.

If I remember, someone at NQ already said that some publishers were ready to get their backs otherwise.

You want DUAL to become as boring as The Division, or as grindy as Destiny? (Or as dead as Titanfall?)

 

I mean, don't get me wrong, we all know EA would never add Season Passes and would milk an IP to the last microtransaction -- oh wait.

 

Or Ubisoft... they would never try to make a console port and then limit the PC's fps to 30 fps -- oops, yeah, scrap that.

 

 

Bottom-line : You failed to pass the Turing test. You clearly think like a replicant. I'm calling the Blade Runners.

None of those games really stands out as being "risky" though, think that was the point. Cookie cutter FPS's and MMOs for the most part.

 

The bad reps are warranted and still warranted, IMO.

It is true that those games are not the most unique of their kinds but at least it shows that publishers are still eager to take risks financially because they cost a lot.

 

Division, Destiny and Star Wars were a big gamble money wise because for the first two we didnt know if an MMO-FPS would be well accaimed by the public and for star wars looking by how many MMOs have already failed it was also a challenge to convince a large public.

 

Now with our DU, we already have a proof for this kind of gameplay with Minecraft, SpaceEngineers, Starbound, StarCitizen, Ark, Rust so once again DU is not completely new overall, which makes him eligible for a publisher support.

The only reason is because of this subscribtion imo, only a big publisher might be able to offer something else to the players.

To make a few things clear (before closing this topic that was ongoing for too long):

 

1) Arguing the fact that the limited success is just due to the monetization model is a very very biased statement to justify a point view.

True, it had an impact, without a doubt. But if there was a calculated factor to reduce the amount of players interested, it was this one. We don't want to publish a "mass market" game to apply to any kind of player. And it's also just a matter of financial viability: Dual Universe might the first MMORPG to use cloud technology to host the game universe and it will have a cost per player. Yes, Dual Universe will be a niche game, but with a community probably much bigger than all those against the subscription model can imagine: Free to Play and Buy to Play have shown they weren't perfect models or the ideal solution for every game. In short, there are not the prophetized evolution as they were presented. There are just alternatives, and alternatives that make sense in specific cases. As it is now, they're are not the models that make the most sense for Dual Universe. Plain and simple.

 

2) If you don't see other reason for the slow progress of the kickstarter, here are a few that are quite obvious:

- Dual Universe was nearly unknown 3-4 months ago. Visibility takes time. A lot of players that can be potentially interested are not even aware yet of the game existence.

- There have been a few recent events (notably one very ambitious Sci-Fi game made by an indie studio that promises a lot more than what has been really delivered) that generated - understandably - a lot of distrust to the genre and we happen to have started the Kickstarter campaign in the middle of that. This is very unfortunate, but we couldn't reschedule the kickstarter campaign for later. So we have to deal with it.

- There have been several kickstarter projects that have disappointed recently, generating - again understandably - some distrust to the crowdfunding model.  This didn't help to promote the game either. We still think that Kickstarter is a powerful way for indie developers to finance their game, even if there are projects failing. It's not a perfect model (no one is), it's true it can be improved, but it's a model that need to exist, just because it's a relevant model in many cases.

 

Failure shouldn't make loose faith in a model or a genre, especially when there have been also many success, but this is something only players can decide on a personal level and the mood nowadays tends - unfortunately - to see the bad without seeing the good.

 

We hope this will have answered most of the questions on the topic.
