Currency/trade

Recommended Posts

I don't get it! If this is going to be a game revolveing arround economy and trade there will have to be a universal currency of some sort, or not what if we all just barder, or we can use a certain material and imagine it as the currency, tell us what you think.

As explained in the forum FAQ here - https://board.dualthegame.com/index.php?/topic/1122-dual-universe-faqsources/

DU will have a standardized currency - https://board.dualthegame.com/index.php?/topic/21-devblog-from-barter-to-market-economy/

Standardized Currency: Currently, there is no plan to enable players to create their own currency, for several reasons: - Risk of imbalance: If there is something that needs to be stable for a sandbox game, this is the in-game economy.

- Development priority: Many features are quite long to develop (even the basic ones). And as this type of game mechanics implies a complex game design behind it in order to work well, it would cost a lot of development time. And for now, it's far from being in priorities

- Fun to play: We are not entirely convinced that enabling players to create their own money would be fun on the long run, nor really very easy to understand and master for most of the players (look how the economy in real life is complexified just by that). While we don't want to go "mainstream" in the game design of Dual Universe, we don't want either to go for a game that will only appeal to a very small population of players. We also need numbers to create a MMORPG full of player-driven stories!

Ill just add the piece from the front Dual Universe game faq on how economies will work.

http://www.dualthegame.com/faq

"

(what follows is described for the purpose of the alpha and due to change as the game progresses)
The economy will be a market economy primarily based on buy/sell orders of raw materials and elements. Prices on the market will be determied by supply and demand.
Unique items, such as a well crafted and constructed spaceship will go to auction, we hope players can reward and appreciate builders and architects, whilst those with no desire to build their own crafts can still access sophisticated constructs.
The passion behind Dual Universe is to have an emergent economy with minimun intervention by the developers. The Arkship will have rudimentary market with trading NPCs who will buy and sell various items and resources to provide early stage gameplay and bootstrap the economy. But other than that it will be up to players to build and manage market places. These will inevitably compete against each other (“market PvP”) and fuel other aspects of a civilisation; security, logistics, accessability etc.

We don't know nearly enough to judge how will market currency work. 3 key points are:

-1) How does currency enter economy, in other words how do you earn it.

-2) What intrinsic value does currency have, in other word what can you do with it outside player market.

-3) Balance between money entering and leaving economy.

All of those are critical.

If -2) is not there, and your money is worthless, bad things happen. Best case, players do straight items-for-itmes barter. Worst case is trading not happening, as sellers don't sell because what they get is worthless compared to what they give. Maybe people will even create their own virtual currency even.

If -3) is too much imbalanced, money is easy to earn, and enters economy in massive amounts, while not leaving it fast enough. This means crazy inflation in most cases. Which also means barter becoming more widespread.

At this point I really want to know, how will we earn money and what will we spend it on. Can't really think of anything that will be organic with DU direction. Obviously, it has something to do with NPCs, but it doesn't sit good with players creating and running all cities and infrastructure.

Cheers!
