" Since our dear Zebra is an AI:

History == log_file.txt;

(Sadly)

However, her algorithms were kind enough to spare you from an exhaustive history lesson on her log files in binary languages.

Instead, Kurock and Zebra spent quite a while compiling the log files in line with ASCII, and even more hours making sure you understand what's being said.

In the spirit of all games that concern virtual or realistic Thrones, here's a mild and public overview of the Dual Universe's very own Great Game.

While it is a Universal truth that no two people are exactly alike, can we say the same about gamers?

From the variety of organisations already active in Dual Universe, there's no shortage of role play, activity or feud.

Thankfully, the Dual Universe Community is a bit forgiving to erring organisations, but when it comes to play styles...there's no shortage of judges, juries or (coming this Alpha) executioners.

Let's be honest here, we all need the ugly truth about play styles shoved down our collective throats, no?

@Lethys did us the favour and wrote an informing article about play styles.

Minus the cute pictures of toddlers and their visible opinions on style, Lethys article is as interesting as it serious.

In the words of the Boobian:

Quote

Get off your lazy ass and dive into a new world full of wonderful and exciting places.

Enough said. Read up here and find your own playstyle: Playstyles in a Sandbox. (Hint: it's something that works.)

Zebra is diving back into <read> mode.

Cheers.

I've just published Outpost Zebra's next article, and its all about scripting. Dual Universe will have several languages in it; Lua and CSS are the two main ones. If you always thought that writing code was something way over your head... Well, writing code for Dual Universe might surprise you with how easy it is.

Anyone Can Script is an article focusing on explaining how intuitive and easy programming will be in the game. If you feel that being able to write Lua and CSS to make yourself more valuable as a player and improve your overall experience is out of your reach... Well, I say you're wrong!

I invite you to visit Oz and read the latest entry.

I appreciate your kind words although i'm sure there are many curious souls out there that would figure it out eventually.

Hello again everyone,

In my quest to interview various organisations I had the chance to have a talk with Ben Fargo. A member of the Blue Moon Crew.

Feel free to follow this link for a look into the story behind the Blue Moon.

Between Christmas and new years eve Oz will not be publishing any new content. For the simple reason that most people will be pretty busy celebrating with family and friends.

As always I extend an open invitation to anyone who wants to have an interview or an article published.

Best wishes for what promises to be an exciting Dual Universe rich year. :)

'Oz is still active and looking for content-makers (positive sense: there's no PvP as yet).

Articles, non-NDA reports, fan art, fan fiction, videos and organisation propaganda are all welcome to be hosted at Oz.

As promised, we'll be giving every hosted article a shout-out on Twitter. If the userbase grows, we'll expand the social media coverage to Facebook (ahem).

Yama's pictures went online recently, and the majority of the content we've come across on Twitter has been given some more attention by Oz. Twitter Oz is always active, giving your organisations a second voice and your efforts for the game a little more of the attention you deserve. With a steady stream of content, Oz will never sleep.

Feel free to sign up and host your content by yourself here:

https://www.outpostzebra.com/

Our Discord channel is ever open to all, through the HTX Discord:

https://discord.gg/XPj8EUc

When we have higher rates of participation from the community, our dear Outpost Zebra will get her very own Discord server.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Oz Team.

Ben Fargo's a prominent member of Dual Universe and his latest article is one I find quite intriguing. He explores what he conceives to be the ruin of many MMOs. On the basis of his experience with Star Wars Galaxies, Ben argues that the 'boredom' of many games results from something very simple.

I found the article quite interesting and debatable. I'm sure many people stand to learn a thing or two. For you curiosity, here are some excerpts:

Quote

"We really needed to give people the experience of being Han Solo or Luke Skywalker rather than being Uncle Owen, the moisture farmer. We wanted more instant gratification: kill, get treasure, repeat. We needed to give people more of an opportunity to be a part of what they have seen in the movies rather than something they had created themselves.”

Quote

The big problem is that MMO’s are not really suited to making people heroes.  Heroes are important because they accomplish what ordinary people can not. In a single or small party game, this is easy because everyone else is an NPC.

Quote

Another way of looking at the change in SWG is that it made the player feel like the protagonist.  Having a protagonist, a main character, is considered a requirement not just for movies, but for all forms of fiction.

It's an exceptional and insightful piece, as usual with Ben's deep analysis. Head over to https://bit.ly/2ufipkM and read the rest. Perhaps you won't agree with some of his thoughts. Perhaps you would.

Thank you, @Ben Fargo! I look forward to seeing you soon!

Hi, thanks for the article Ben. I'd take some issue with the first quote about boredom:

"I have seen a number of comments by people who have pointed out aspects of Dual Universe that they consider boring.  Whether is it the length of time space travel takes, the need to mine resources manually or the limit on the weapons one person can operate, they all stress that unless these sources of boredom are eliminated, no one will want to play the game. "

I have mentioned travel times a bit recently, yes, but not said that the sources of boredom should be eliminated, nor taken the position that nobody will want to play. I believe that certain paths should involve investment, also of time, but this does not mean that the time spent spending time needs to be boring almost by very definition. I find it crazy that people engaged in a game end up regularly pointing their spaceship in a certain direction and going afk for 30 mins to 'avoid' the boring bit - and that's just in a 'smallish universe' where you may even be killed because you are afk, but you take the risk anyway because even taking the trash out is more 'interesting'! I did not suggest necessarily shortening the journey time, but want the devs to consider what can be usefully done in game at the same time. It could be a mini-game holodeck, crafting, permanent dangers in space which require active piloting similar to driving a car or so, doing ship upgrades, or even switching to secondary chars in game.

"If you are tempted to request changing some feature of Dual Universe to make it less boring, ask yourself what you want to do in the game."

I don't want to be wasting time needlessly on repetitive stuff if I don't feel like it. Different people will be bored by different things, though, so it's going to be tricky to decide whether good immersion means it takes me 5 mins or secs to dock my ship and get to whatever shop, or my quarters, or wherever else. Generally, if you offer people short cuts, they will take them, however...

Hello, dualism.

I agree with some of your thoughts, but this the 'Arkship pub', we are not allowed the freedom of intellectual debate here. Outpost Zebra has a fully functional comment system that's meant to serve this very purpose.

It will save you the time of reading there and commenting here. It will also reduce the likelihood of moderator warnings or the locking of the thread due to heated discussions. Oz is hardly moderated, because the site is meant to host a larger variety of content. It will also drive more traffic to the site: something we are very interested in achieving...think of it as a win-win :P . Many thanks.

Cheers.

There is nothing wrong with polite debate, which is what happens in the DU forums. Intellectual debate is also welcome here.

I know you want to drive visitors to the Zebra site, however derailing existing threads to do so isn't the way to do it.

Cheers :)

Hello, CoreVamore.

I agree: intellectual debate is welcome on the DU Forums: as long as they are done in the right section of the Forums. The 'Arkship Pub's ' primary purpose was outlined by NQ below:

As this thread is Oz's official thread, it wouldn't be right to debate on this thread - no more than it would be right to debate on any organisation's OP or person's welcome post in the Arkship Pub. To comfortably host those on this Forum, we will consider creating an Oz OP in the 'Offtopic discussions' section of the forum. Falstaf and I briefly discussed this yesterday, but we have decided to wait a bit longer. The Oz team needs to determine whether such a page will see enough use to justify its existence.

For now, this Oz page functions like any other organisation page or welcome page on the Forums: giving everyone updates about new events or any development. On the other hand, if you are inclined to do so, you can write an opinion piece about this and we'll definitely appreciate it.

Cheers.
