Ideology and Censorship in Organizations

Recommended Posts

So i've been following this games development for a while and one questions has always been on my mind: how exactly will censorship be handled regarding organizational practices. I'm not talking about trolling, baiting, and verbal harassment; but rather ideas and actions.

What I mean by this is, lets say an organization of national socialists make a giant space station shaped like a swastika and they're doing it solely because it represents them, not to be a troll or anything like that. Under the games policies, would this be something punishable? What if it were a fasces or something and not specifically a swastika? This is one example, but i'm sure there are plenty other for other ideologies and organization types. I think this is something important that needs to be answered, because in such an open game like this there will be people who want to do this type of thing.

With the history regarding that kind of thing in Europe, they said it won't be tolerated and definitely be punished. There will be an eula in place for that. Every other action/shape/construct/whatever will be up to players to react to

I would not mind it If they did it because it's a nice geometrical figure, how ever if they do it because the support Nazism or something like it, ban them all for 1 month as a first offense

Determining what should and should not require dev intervention is such a gray area, and would probably have to be done on a case by case basis. A swastika space station is actually a great example of this. On one hand, it is a symbol of hatred and violence. On the other hand, in Asia and India it is a symbol of peace. It is also a nice geometrical shape; it would probably function well for a space station (lot's of surface area for docking while still being relatively compact, easy to navigate in). I'm sure the devs would have to consider the intention with which it was built as well as how much it resembles a particular symbol.

Being that they are a French company, I would bet they would get rid of things like that, but the point is that it really has to be a case by case basis.

If NQ didn't intervene which they would .... Yin Yang federation would :P

"Hey guys you can't have that hate symbo-"

*screeching*

"No seriously, its really offensiv-"

*makes another*

"That's about a fucking genocide. It is not a thing to joke-"

*random screeching*

"Fire the fucking laser holy fuck. Even PETA is gonna thank us for killing this herd of jackasses."

Who defines the "hate speech" being referred to here? Because I don't think that the developers should interfier with gameplay. Who cares if someone makes a giant swastica. It's a game at the end of the day.

Excuse me? A fucking REAL-LIFE GENOCIDE IS A "GAME"?

But you must know that some things have to be taken care of. Should "hacking" be allowed because its just a "game"? And hacking is way less worse than a real genocide.

Hacking is outside of the game so developers should stop that. In game I really don't see the point in trying to regulate every single bit of offensive content. Random trolls will make stuff like this daily and I can't see any large organisations making something like a swastika.

And hear I though this discussion was just about whether people should be allowed to build certain shaped objects (yes) and not about someone going to do an actual genocide. I'm pretty sure that doing that is above the paygrade for everyone at NQ. If you on the other hand think that building a certain shape IN A GAME is equal to genocide I would recommend visiting a psychiatrist.

Also didn't we already have a thread about censorship where people were arguing that NQ should stop or punish people if there is ever something the person finds offensive (of course everyone feels it should be based on what they find offensive because there is no objective standard for that). I hope I don't have to go an copy paste the long answer I wrote, but just to respond to those people would be sufficient reason to make that certain

geometrical shape.

Bit more about swatica, complains about something swastika shaped you may build in game tell them to look at it from direction where it lays on its side (not on the corner like nazi version) and state that you are building a Finnish air force base http://cdn.ksml.fi/incoming/xtaerr-5380529.jpg/ALTERNATES/FREE_1140/5380529.jpg or honoring the country's most prestigious military medal http://www.mannerheiminperinnesaatio.fi/files/62/textsize/Mannerheimristi.jpg .  (just in case there are quick to judge people with no interest in research, the symbol was adopted by the air force years before certain Hitler was even active in politics)  When making a moonbase  you might just be fan of iron sky and should absolutely be allowed to replicate the base in the movie just like people can recreate their favorite ships from fiction.  http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ax9kTkyCn2A/T6rlVvkHYiI/AAAAAAAAAG8/5f9N5RjYC_g/s1600/iron-sky1.jpg  Which reminds me http://www.businessinsider.com/nazi-swastika-symbol-peace-india-china-asia-hindu-hitler-tim-marshall-2017-5?r=UK&IR=T&IR=T  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uz8gE92lVDY

BTW United States did a bit of genocide with native Americans and has killed quite a bit of civilians in middle east more recently, should this mean that players can't make shapes that are closely related with united states or use American symbolism for their organisation. You might not feel they are offensive but you can be sure there are many in those regions that could genuinely say that. How about symbols of Russia/Soviet union or China. Stalin and Mao are pretty good competition for Hitler in genocide department. Funny how people don't talk as much about those. What if someone build something shaped like a mushroom cloud and people from Hiroshima and Nagasaki demand it removed as offensive because it reminds them of horrible things done to those cities. (well maybe that is a bit far fetched but hopefully you get the point)

Just few examples why there is no objective standard for offensive and wanting something censored because you don't personally like it is either self centered, arrogant stupid or all of the previous. I believe a snowflake is modern term for such person. I would also like to repeat that making a certain geometric shape in virtual world IS NOT and actual real life genocide. And yes allowing that doesn't mean hacking should be allowed because that is possibly the stupidest argument I have seen on this forum for anything.

Now look at what you made me do. I was supposed to just point out the complete idiocy of that not "censoring a symbol in game equals real life genocide" comment.

If you want my support for any censorship, come back when someone is spreading private or false information of an actual person against their will or making actual threats of violence. Though at that point it is very easily a police matter anyway.

The swastika example is actually an easy one. There are several nations, most notably Germany, that ban the depiction of the swastika in all non-historical, research, or teaching contexts, including making it "publicly accessible through data storage..." So, NQ would have to forcibly remove Swastikas from the game, or face penalties under German law.

Now, a more interesting question (and one that'll cause a lot of debate in the community) is their policy on other types of content. The most notable example being those people who just can't seem to resist drawing penises on everything. I predict it'll take approximately 6.2 seconds before someone loads the game for the first time, sprints outside, looks strait down, and draws a penis on the ground right outside the Arkship. Are we just going to have to live with penises carved into the sides of mountains everywhere?

I'm curious what NQ will do once this starts happening.

I think they said that when it comes to general troll garbage like that, it'll be up to the players to dish out the punishments. Which is fine with me. I can't wait to see some trolls get wasted!

But, of course, it will also depend on which communities you hang out with. Some will probably ban that stuff, others may not care.

This is the reason i made this post though, what if it isn't a troll? What if its a bunch of National Socialists or Fascists trying to just use their symbolism? I get that spamming swastikas around an enemy base would be trolling, but what if it was just isolated within their own regions? This could apply to other symbols as well.

I suspect that they will be classified as a hate group(in the case of swatikas) by NQ.

How about this for an idea, let the organizations/ideologies fight it, I plan on making a Utopian Socialist organization with a couple of friends, we would be more than happy in making alliances with other similar organization to fight space fascists.

I chuckled a bit at "to just use their symbol".

Perhaps to others beyond Europe or certain states in Europe it might seem more trivial, but in the end the swastika is a special case of the not so distant past and as someone already said also banned or restricted in public (in Germany) unless under few restricted cases such as teaching history in class or showing it in a museum, etc.

Sometimes it still seems surprising to me how "unrestrained" the use or praise of this symbol or ideology is in other nations, especially if they also fought in the war (against Germany), almost making it somewhat ironic.

Why all that now? Simple: many in Europe tend to think differently or critical about this compared to those from other parts of the world.

This means that the swastika is perhaps a simple, yet unfitting example to pull up in the debates over and over again as it is a special case. Given history and how many (here) think about it, it should be outright banned in general as it basically also relates to actual genocide, warmongering, etc.

If you invented your own symbol that would relate to these things in a purely fictional context, merely "in-game", no one would probably bat an eyelash if there was no obvious reference to a real comparable ideology.
