Carnage

I'm on fire... The water does not help...

Recommended Posts

Title because I live in Australia and we're currently in the middle of the longest hottest heatwave we've had for a long time, I'm sure death is imminent... I can't say I'm optimistic about my enjoyment of it for a few more days, particularly as my birthday (7th) is the mourning day for 2 historic bushfires which killed hundreds of people... but enough about how I hope Justin Bieber will leave this world.

Me: Carnage (Carn)... I've recently also been called 'Carnitas' by my super funny clan mates... I've been told it means 'little meat' in Mexican/Spanish... To quote an unnamed leader of the NWO on the size of things: "I guarantee you there's no problem. I guarantee.".

I'm head of a small clan who started in a now dead game called Firefall where we had at one stage about 110 members, well FF died due to... lets called them 'poor development decisions' and we moved onto Ark: Survival Evolved. After some unmentionable chaos in that game (as fun as it was), we moved onto Warframe, mostly staying as a core group of about 10 members, but picking up people along our journey and losing some others. Ultimately we are waiting on Star Citizen as a clan, but we play a lot of other games while we wait.

I'm the type of player to be dedicated to a primary game for a number of years, I like reaching an endgame type situation, then refining my skills at that level, I played UT2K4 for about 5 years so I'm very much into FPS games, but I often find myself spending my gaming hours building within a game or outside it. I've made a few Skyrim mods in the past and Am quite intrigued by possibilities of DU, I could see it being my creative outlet as opposed to the more serious nature of Star Citizen.

I also study Microbiology and Genetics, which are the main other parts of my life, so I'll likely have an aura of scientific scrutiny on some of my future posts...

I'll watch this game, try and contribute, and possibly get my core clan mates interested, but we'll need to see how alpha/betas go before I nail down a more long-term investment than the iron pledge.

Cheers.

Welcome to Dual Universe.

I expect DU to cater for many different play-styles and groups. This includes the ones serious about the game and the more casual players.

Which between Star Citizen and DU will have the larger percentage of "serious" players, well, time will tell.

Welcome to the community, where the men are men, the women are men, and everyone is my alt.

Also, glad to see someone around who has played Firefall before. Game had such promise. :(

Welcome Carnage!  I've got a buddy over there in Oz who has been telling me the same thing.  And he's a welder so he actually IS on fire in all that heat over there!!

Nice to have you aboard and stay cool ;)

Welcome to the game, if you think star citizen is "serious" you should see all the politics taking place about a game not even out yet on this forum and discord, its chaos

Welcome to the community ;)

I think you underestimate DU here as less serious, but fair enough.

Gl and have fun watching all the videos and reading the blogs

Welcome to DU and welcome to the forums!

Oh and by the way, sometimes some of the alts become sentient and forget they're alts, so watch out for that :P

Well, when I say serious, I mean in DU I don't expect to be equipping specialist gear in a tactical squad of 10 so we can specifically raid an enemy ship for the purpose of capturing the occupants for a bounty and selling off the cargo and ship, and that being our primary source of income... I kind of expect to be building and exploring stuff in DU, trading and managing an outpost, these things I consider more casual types of activities, I'm not suggesting that the DU Devs or community are less serious about their game than the SC guys are.

But in any case thanks for the welcome all.

Well and what hinders you in DU to do EXACTLY that? It's a open world sandbox - you can do whatever you want and you can make money with whatever the player run market needs

I very much hope the game focus is not on FPS, Interplanetary Warfare, space combat & the destruction of other players...

I'm not saying those things have their place but given the footage and my understanding of the game, so far its focus is on crafting, building, planetary landscaping and scripting etc...

It's about rebuilding society. So there's the need for creating constructs, ships, cities, stations but also it involves politics, wars over land, wars over people, wars over power, piracy, scams, player run markets, and much more.

You can diminish DU to only the building and creative part but then again I can say eve online is only about HighSec mission running and pve. Both is just wrong ;)

You're welcome to your opinion, but from the perspective of someone still learning about the game and its scope, there appears to be a focus in DU that is vastly different to that of a game like SC. Sure the mechanics you point out may well exist in the final game, but I cannot see it ever standing up to the AAA FPS games out there in an FPS scenario and given what the information seems to be pointing towards it never should.

I'm not seeing the high stakes risk and reward twitch based mechanics that defines the FPS genre here at all. But I do see a vast 'minecraftian' element that those games will always lack for the sake of simplicity, and that is a mechanic/genre that is severely lacking in modern games, sure many games try to have an element of it to varying degrees but nothing really comes close to minecraft, few games let you terraform or script mechanics in the way I've seen/heard about in DU and that will be a big draw card for DU in the future.

Your optimism is nice, but I'll retain my opinion and scepticism on the apparent direction of DU for the time being.

It also features guns...on ships... and the whole idea you can orbitally strike down your foes if they were to become tad bit too annoying.

It's a sandbox. Interplanetary warfare, PvP and general disdain, are as much a part of the game as crafting, building and turbonerding. politics.

Why would anyone bother mass producing a certain ship, if stuff never got blown up to smithereens? O.o

Why would anyone script a fancy series of maneuvers on a ship if PvP was not in mind?

And you got to realise, PvP covers the economic warfare in the game, i.e. people setting up monopolies, price-fixing, black markets (to avoid redonkulous taxation schemes and fees, which will make a few turbonerds "politicians" angry) and in general, any form of competition between players, in any platform, is PvP.

It's a sandbox, you won't avoid PvP, so, in many ways, it's about PvP at its very core, as in Player Interactions.

Also, the game is in First Person point of view, it's not Call of Duty simulation though. It follows a type of probabilistic calculations based on distance, speed, and other factors, to determine hit chance. That doesn't mean though, that a person will be able to hit someone else at 1000m with ease, as the game just takes out the reflex based shooter element, not logic.

As Lethys pointed out, you can say your thing is "Building and Crafting", but those are just parts of the game, not its focus. Its focus is about player interactions. Those interactions may involve talking to people - and some people let their guns do their talking and they can only say one - very loud - word.

There is a game about crafting, building and landscaping. It's called Landmark and it's being taken out the back by Daybreak Games to be "sent to a farm" along with other games that didn't have anything interesting going for them other than "build stuff nobody can actually destroy".

Let's not turn DU into Space Landmark, okay? Okay! :D

Cheers!

Well noone ever said DU and SC compete in any way.

1) DU is lock on target and no FPS. No player skill involved, only statistics

So all your points are invalid, because thats not what DU wants to be. And IF you would have watched the videos, read the devblogs and read the forum you'd know that all my points were not mere dreams but actual goals - PVP will be implemented for release and CVC too, if those 650k crowdfunding is achieved. If not, we'll get it with the first major patch. So yes to all my points.

Speaking of optimism and scepticism: I could say the same about SC and their various problems there and shitstorms, but I won't because I never spoke of SC in the first place and this is not a SC forum

And this is what I mean by 'serious' because SC, COD, UT etc, the FPS interactions are their primary mechanic, they have a very specific direction and action based experiences, sure SC is also very space combat orientated but really that's just an extension of the FPS when it comes down to it.

I understand DU will have elements of all that in it, I'm not suggesting that stuff will not be destroyable of there will be no PvP, but there seems to be the suggestion that DU will be comparable to SC, COD or UT in their moment by moment action and game focus which I know is just not going to be there as the primary focus of the game, because frankly if destroying stuff, space battles and killing ppl in FPS was the only drawcard of this game, I'd not even be here, there is plenty of that to go around already.

1) and that's why the situations you'll be in are not as serious in my opinion.

I'll be getting around to reading/watching what is available in time, only so many hours in a day.

Ah now you said the right thing.

Your first answers suggested that in DU there won't be combat, piracy, wars and such things and only now we know your real issue with it not being "serious": FPS in the sense of player skill involved.

If that's less serious or not depends on the player's taste tbh.

Some prefer instances in a game and realistic combat, others rather have a single world where every action they take could have consequences for the rest of the community.

Edit:

To be more precise: I wouldn't call it serious, it's just a difference because of the scope of either game and due to technical limitations. So it's more a compromise and taste of gameplay really than anything else

Firefall is dead!?!?!  I haven't played it for a bit but I enjoyed that game for a while. Pour a lil' liquor for those homies that ain't here no mo.

Yeah, devs released it and basically completely removed all the mechanics they had been working on (and us giving feedback on) dumped all the crafting aspects and made their main interesting mechanic (mining with thumpers) yield no materials (as there is no crafting to use them on)... there is nothing left but the world itself and a few of the main missions, but apparently the entire dev team has left the company now... it will never get an update, it's just been left to rot.
