Become a Rich Merchant or becoming a major Military Leader/Ruler?

I plan to be a merchant, but I really do not expect to be rich.  I will be happy if I make enough to keep my ship running.

I just intend on enjoying the game. That being said, I do hope to establish a stable and growing market + transport business with my brother and earn a reputation at that. Doesn't mean I don't want to explore, fight, or design too, but marketing will be the focus.

I won't be in it for the money per se, but rather what the money will allow me to do. Things like buy DACs, build cool ships, pay others to hold down the fort so I can explore, etc.

I think I will try a little bit of everything eventually, but I know I will enjoy learning how to become a successful merchant and (hopefully) seeing our business take off! (Please pardon the pun. :D )

I don't care about wealth and money (I happily burn through my funds just because shits and giggles)

I don't care about fame (Those who really matter in the game know what I can do)

I don't care about my stuff ingame (sometimes you lose a fight, sometimes you win it - noone cares)

I just do what seems hilarious to me

Well, I'm founder and leader of the 3rd biggest company (VMS), so that should explain it.

Who are you? What org? Never even heard of you lol

"Who are you? What org? Never even heard of you lol"

I'm not that active in the forums. I'm the founder of the Vortrex Mining and Science Inc. Maybe you misunderstood me. my company is on place 16 worldwide, but many of those before us are states, empires etc. We're on place 3 in the designing/manufacturing sector (Silverlight, Objective Driveyards, we).

I haven't presented me in the Arkship Pub yet because i want to do this as soon as i buy the gold pledge.

You silly people choose the easy roads. Try being a pirate, it's more fun and more of a challenge <3

Actually, given how FTL works in DU, it will be the hardest "profession". You want to get to another system, better send them probes down there, cause yo name is blacklisted and can't access stargates :V . And you can't attack the traders coming to your faction to trade, cause you damage the market reliability of your faction, thus, a person who does so, is for all intends and purposes, shooting themsleves on the foot. You want to get to an other faction's territory and plunder? Good luck resupplying from anyone in there, cause once they get a sniff of your, they will be blacklistin you, although, this may lead to Emergent Space Gas-station robberies.

And probes launched could - and should be possible in my opinion - to be destroyed. So I guess the game will develope a very reasonable low-sec venue between faction territories, where such splendid people as pirates will operate out of (and where the salt mines will operate day and night).

So yeah, piracy may be TOO difficult for some to handle, which is fine I guess ,we don't need Little Timmy unleashing his puberty fuelled anger on anyone and everyone in-game.

I myself, have no issue with some hardcore difficulty when it comes to being a pirate, either by making difficult to travel to other systems via warp (not access to stargates via blacklisting), or by having fuel limitations, which make a ship impossible to resupply on it if its within a hostile territory, thus requiring some black market to operate in each faction that profits from such pirates. See? Even pirates have to socialise in a game that way.

So, in relation to the OP, chances are that black market dealers will be making all the mullas by selling via trade window, instead of the market, to avoid taxation and the such.

Have fun dealing with pirates to the OP... and Bernarr, honor amongst thieves ey? :P

I would find it extremely interesting to see what the community wants to become, for me I kind of want to become both. Having all the resources you could ever want and becoming a major player in the Game. I guess it would be cool sending out a fleet and having millions of dollars.

Sorry to be that 1 person but...

A fucken million dollar ship? That is a huge sum of money. Like, buy a few houses money.

Feed 100,000 kids money.

10 houses money.

About 50 college degrees money.

Retirement money.

And you spent it on a ship.

I think he is reffering to "in-game" money, not the real life bucks

There is always honor amongst the true pirates. The griefer thieves of the unwashed masses who give us true pirates a bad name, though, have no honor and should not be trusted.

You do bring up a good point though. So though I may not post this now, I will likely, in the future, attempt to diplomasize us a black market resupply network that is safe for the suppliers, cuz I takes care of my people, even if they aren't in my org.

They think they are all the stuff and gonna do this and that, but never do.

Over their heads, eh?

I don't think you understand what a challenge pirating in DU is going to be. Your average angry tween isn't going to be a pirate in DU. It is going to take a whole lot more than "let's go steal from people". It is going to be a lifestyle choice. It will definitely weed out the weaker people unfit to become true pirates!

Well said. I take it you will probably be doing some self-policing then, which is great for the game and your profession!

By the way gentleman, in reference to the last couple posts; let's keep it civil please. ????

And now you have a reason for smugglers and smuggling and voila! Look at all that emergent gameplay.

At this stage I have no idea. When it comes to the eventual civilisation we establish, I'm at a loss. I've considered many types of roles, from engineering to commanding a starship, to trading and smuggling to communications officer to pilot. I'll see where the wind takes me once we get to that point, I suppose.

But for the early game, I'll probably keep away from the actual building side of the game and stick to protecting the parties going outside the Arkzone to mine for rarer materials; so a mercenary I guess. And maybe I'll see if the fledgling governments and corporations will ask for some pirate hunting, because I'm sure there will be plenty of you sticking just outside the edge of the Arkzone in the wilderness, waiting to kill everyone and being all self sufficient (until ships get guns and civilisation starts the bombing runs). Unlike the late game, piracy will be really easy here for a while (as it will be on the edges of civilisation in general I guess).

Piracy (proper one at least) won't be easy at all. But if you do it right and live with the consequences, it'll be good. Even in late game - I think most of the bears who speak of 'our planet' have no idea how vast even one single planet is and that you just can't control every single square meter

We should make a reality show out of it, Five Corsairs One Frigate. Not related to what you said, just wanted to put that out there. We can be the Kardashians of DU.
