How Dual Universe can Generate More Money

Dual Universe: A game where they are testing revolutionary technology.

We WILL have markets. The DEVs could technically charge companies so they could have screens in these virtual markets.

Pretty much psychological advertising: You take a glance off a Cola Coke (definitely not a parody of coka cola), and that thought is fed into your sub-conscious. Your reaction would soon be, "I'm thirsty. What should I drink?" The "Cola Coke" add comes from your sub-conscious into your conscious. You decide, "Cola Coke sounds pretty good!"

They have now secretly gave you the idea of drinking Cola Coke. You may be wondering,

"Kuritho... Why not a regular add?"

My response: They're gaming. They aren't on a TV or anything. And putting pop-up adds on games is just bullshit.

Just to prove: Do you want a drink?

I don't see how this generates money.

But if there are Coca Cola signs posted here and there, they could certainly pull some product placement money. For the most part, product placement doesn't bother people the way actual advertising does. (Although Prius ads worked into the script of Bones were a little much even though I like the car).

I forgot to add that part...

Actually Funcom did this with Anarchy Online and it generated extra revenue.

It did specialised adds for all sorts of cool stuff from movie trailers to drinks.

Caused some controversy when it was patched into the game.

I'm in favor of something like this, but not entirely sure how effective it would be. Worth a try!

Its a little tricky though.

Unlike in Anarchy Online where these billboards were already in the game, in DU it would have to be players building them.

I can imagine not everybody is going to be willing to build real life add support.

This how it looked like.

It advertised for orgs and real life products. The movie trailers were my favourites, I think it was in 2005 the same year youtube launched. So it was pretty awesome back then. :D

Why cant I embed anymore?

Why cant I embed anymore?

Probably because of malicious scripts?

this is why we can't have nice things...

I think they will have better luck with a cosmetic items shop than with ad revenue.

Think of it. Alternate skins for ship shielding? Cosmetic vapor/energy trails? Org-branded logo stamps? good stuff!

(though I'm in the process of re-designing my org logos that they will be paintable using the voxel paint tools, alchemists were the first to get their new one ;))

If I'm paying a subscription, I don't want to see a bunch of emersion breaking ads in game.

I think a lot of people feel this way.

I don't wan't to see AMD, or "Intel Inside", or a Coca-Cola Polar Bear, unless its created by in game users.  Let AMD, Intel or Coca-Cola purchase a subscription like everybody else.  And don't protect anything created outside of the safe zones.

Sure. Ads (or product placement) will bring in money... but he's talking about advertising fake products - no money in that.

Uhm no?

In the OP it talks about companies paying NQ, not orgs.

Or did I misunderstand?

Edit: there might be a little misunderstanding. We are talking about product placement things and OP is talking about plays on real brands sponsord by real companies. I see what you mean.

What I got from this was that in-game organizations would be able to pay NQ real money to advertise their in-game products.

I think this is good idea, personally I would add a restriction on the types of pictures people can use like only in-game screen shots.

Oh, maybe so. I would rather see RL product placement than have meta-adverts for in-game products, paid with cash.

I was more-so thinking of a TV-News sorta thing. Where somebody puts on advertisements on the broadcasting, and since the person controlling the TV-news thing will be part of Novaquark staff, companies would pay them.

And the benefit of putting a TV in your ship? Uhh... something cool.
