  1. First off, I just want to say that I hope this comes off as a coherent and easy to understand thread. In this, my goal is to try brainstorm with you guys how NPC pirates might be implemented. I'll put forth my ideas first, of course, but feel free to put your own suggestions and also what you disagree on below. I'm not certain if this has been suggested before, and if it has, sorry... Hopefully, if so, I've at least added something new to the mix. Let's start with the why. I'll be upfront, I don't have a whole lot of experience with pirates or combat in general. But, I'll take an educated guess at the current situation. Space is quite vast and the number of pirates, relatively small. This is my first assumption. If I were to guess, 99.99% of pirates will patrol the pipes to planets since this is the most likely place for people to go. But even then, I doubt every pipe has someone waiting in it 24/7. Therefor, the purpose of NPC pirates is to fill in the gap and add more life to the pretty much lifeless space. Good point, we've just made it more difficult to transport goods around the solar system. However, I'm not saying the threat of NPC pirates appearing should be ever-present. (I'll discuss this a little more later) This comes back to the "Why do we need NPC pirates?", one thing you can say is just an extra source of loot, but the other is to provide a need for other elements of the game. Right now, the lack of a threat, this is purely an assumption, means there isn't a need for escorts, or branches of an organization built around combat. I'll take the example of of the organization I'm in, the Imperial Military, a branch of the Empire. Right now, we're on fairly neutral terms with other organizations, so the military doesn't have much to do aside from designing ships. We advertise our services to the Empire as a whole to assist in hauling escorts, but we haven't had any requests as of yet. It could be because of other reasons, but it could also be because there isn't a need for a service like that because the cost of the one out of 10 times you actually lose a ship—this is another assumption—out weights the cost of hiring us 10 times out. But, if that ratio was more like 1:2, where the chance of a pirate encounter is far higher, the need for a military/contract organization for protection becomes necessary. TL;DR Upside—It will possibly introduce the need for escorts, thus involving more people to participate. Downside—Introduces the necessity to actually have escorts, increasing the cost to the hauler pilot. The nitty-gritty details... First off, there should be a FOB and/or a headquarters of an NPC pirate organization. As to why it should, I'll explain shortly. At these FOBs, they should have stations which act as both storage and a drydock, along with multiple ships used to defend those. These FOBs will act as single entities, producing its own ships using the resources it gathers from miners that it has hunted or as small base income. Optionally, the drydocks can have their own factory. But for the sake of simplicity, the ships can just be spawned in once the AI controlling it has enough resources for it. From the FOBs, ships will be sent out in raiding parties to hunt down miners and get more resources. This is probably the largest thing to tackle programming wise, but is critical nonetheless. Naturally, a FOB will be difficult to find and slowly gain in threat-level. By this, I mean it will gather resources over time; the more resources, the more it will send out raiding parties because it can afford to lose them. It will eventually become a problem, and until it is dealt with completely by attacking the FOB, some of these resources will also be shared to the HQ, where it would deploy more FOBs. The vision of this is that it will create a persistent, but seasonal threat that will require either escorts for haulers, and eventually peaceful alliances or even other pirate organizations could launch an assault on these FOBs for their resources and to reduce the threat of haulers being engaged. Idealistic as it might sound, it could happen like that. Of course, this all relies on the ability of NQ to produce an AI capable of everything I've said. NPCs are classically done poorly in most games, especially when done by a studio who hasn't done it before. But I'll just toss in my ideas here. So, what kind of AI would be any good in this case? For the FOB/HQ, that's simple, the 4X type. Like in the game Stellaris, ships are with a predefined layout will be modified slightly with different weapons and configurations. I won't claim to know AI well at all, but it's been done before, so it could be done here. For the sake of simplicity, the AI will know multiple all ships within a certain area and be able to look at the cargo. A basic threat value could be determined by what guns it has and the size of the ship and the ships close to it. If the AI believes it could raid them, it will send out its own ship or ships to try and attack. Each ship will be controlled by a different AI. This somewhat of a key point I can't imagine myself, but the AI should react to what type of guns, if any, the ship it faces has and, depending on it's own armament, attack differently. In the case that the pirate fleet is heavily damaged, if their warp drives are still operational, they will warp back to their FOB. This would mean, if you know the direction they warped in, you could estimate the position and have a cone to search for the FOB. With that, I think my suggestion for AI is done.

  5. Hi here. I just took my iron pledge few days ago, and I quickly upgraded it to Gold when I discovered the September coming things ! Since then I am spending hours going through forum and devblog to gather all information I can. It just remind me 10 years back when I discovered EvE for the first time. I am then opening a new organisation called Absolution based on what I guess would be possible and fun to me in this game : Exploration of planet, moon, deepspace.. anything where rare ore may be found, Prospection of rare ore, and trading them (location or ore itself), Combat to protect our mine, or to take by force the ones we may want to have, Let's wait and see if this way of life will really be possible and fun in the game!   7. It has recently come to light that with RDMS players will be able to lock others out of using equipment and most likely elements. Without the correct rights, those items become unusable. But this raises a concern from the pirates: "Oi matey! How do we use the stuff we work so hard to steal? Those skull and crossbones stickers won't pay for themselves." My answer is: Sorry, stolen items cannot be used. At least not yet. This is the idea: Loot laundering and the DU equivalent of a chop shop. A place for pirates to take their ill gotten gains and have it "cleaned". Have the tags removed and have the equipment/elements made ready to receive new tags. But this should not be an instantaneous action. This is a process. A bit like hacking but with less finesse and it takes a bit longer and requires some machinery so that it cannot simply be done out in the field. Perhaps a special element that strips away tags on the items/elements placed in it. Perhaps a specific player skill. Perhaps a combination of the two. Discuss!

  9. well first let me introduce myself my name is the flying jackass (eltaradovolador in english) and my goal is to make a pirate organization and i have just to codes that if broken will be punished by death NEVER KILL YOUR COMRADES and WE SHALL NEVER STEAL FROM THE POOR AND DEFENSELESS so where do we get the money you may ask, from evil tyrants empires or any self proclaimed "good" organization while we defend the poor people or anyone in aid we shall be there to help Right now i'm looking for all kinds of players be it pvpers, miners, farmers, builders, scientist and conquerors so for rpers i got a guild backstory because i also want this organization to have some rp i wake up from a long slumber of the cold hard ground thinking about what had my village done wrong to deserve being enslaved and before i knew it i heard a big bang of an explosions nearby our enslavement camp. we were under attack of pirates but why would they attack our village if we had nothing of value, did they just want to end our lives, that's when i realized this wasn't your ordinary pirates they were blue sky pirates who protect the poor from evil tyrants so i grabbed my gun and started helping them with the attack, killing off many bad jailers and soldiers and at that time i meet one of the captains and fought along side him but i couldn't save him from being shot in the back and just when i had lost hope of him and the liberation of my people, more reinforcements came into the battlefield and finished off all remaining forces. after the battle was over i asked if i could join the sky pirates and they allowed me in. this is my story. hope i could make a good rp of a kid joining us leave a message down below if you have any questions and also leave some opinions about how i should continue building this band of pirates or have some helpful comment leave it down below, if you want to join send me a message to and who knows maybe we'll even have a discord sometime so off i go into the wild universe
  10. I REWROTE THIS FACTION a lot has changed The Unified Systems of the outer Belt [uSOB]: REVISED WHO are we? We are a pirate group with a little twist: Unlike most pirate groups that have a hidden base and operate locally, we are speed thinly across the universe and operate entirely ship based. This allows us to be highly mobile and operate with most effectiveness as trade routes may change or trade hubs may rise and fall, we are always sure to be near the money flow. Further we involve in a few more delicate activities that require medium or higher ranks inside our faction (view below for ranks and security clearance). Furthermore we are part of BAND OF OUTLAWS WHAT do we do? While pirates may be accused as griefers and mindless destroyers, we are far from that. Our goal is much simpler and yet (arguably) better, we are after money. Lots of money. “I want to have enough money to allow me to just buy some random dude a deathstar and not feel it” –Aison Bold (actual quote from the community discord) How we acquire that money is unlimited in forms, ways or grade of illegality. WHY do we do what we do? It’s simple, in Dual Universe you do not “Do what you want” you “Are who you want”. I want to be rich. That’s it, it’s really that simple. HOW do we do what we do? Well a good pirate wouldn’t tell his prey how he strikes now would he? We raid and steal. And may or may not indulge in other secret activities. Organization: Our organization relies on cell like structures. This diagram explains it better: Explanation: Bottom -> middle -> Top; lowest -> medium -> highest The red lines represents the security clearance: Any one below them only knows about the rank above. Example: An employee/brute knows only (ONLY) about his supervisor, he/she does NOT know who the other supervisors are, what their orders are and where they operate. Example 2: Supervisors know the orders of their “twin” (the other supervisor under the SAME manager) and of their manager NOT of the other supervisors/managers. This is done to make sure that information stays in the faction. How an order is issued: 1. The Executioner tells one (or both) of his speakers that there is a certain (main-) task that needs to be done and assigns it to one (or both) (tasks may stack/one manager may have multiple tasks). 2. The speakers assign one (or both) of their managers an (sub-) task to either fulfill or help fulfilling the main task the executioner assigned. 3. The Manager briefs his supervisors, who then brief their respective employees and brutes who then get respective orders to fulfill the sub task, thus also helping to fulfill/fulfilling the main task. Specialists: Specialists are people who have focused themselves singularly on one task and are mediocre too horrible at any other (due to their skills) They assist the executioner who may assign them to somebody or directly supervise them. Gameplay: we focus on money and player freedom thus these laws apply: 1. Anything we do is in some form responsible for a profit gain, this may be direct or indirect. 2. Players won’t be limited to doing something they don’t want to do, if somebody doesn’t want to fulfill a task he is free to say so without fearing penalties. 3. Supervisors (and above) are free to go on raids or other activities with their sub ordinaries. 4. This project has also been extended to the greater Dual Universe community, and with the help of the Band of Outlaws, we can all have a place to call home. _________________________________________________________ THE OVERVIEW: • Primary language: English primarily. • Time zone: We accept anyone from around the globe. • Goal: To create a support network for players in DU, providing benefits for mercenaries, bounty hunters, you name it. We plan to have several internal services established to let you play out your character in DU. Band of Outlaws is not out to be the next mega corporation with an umbrella controlling every sub-organization within our community. This was a lone decision by Kiklix and does not reflect the other legate lady astrum nor the members. ​The following are the answers to why COPS has been disbanded. Drama: Certain populous organizations and their legate have been concocting rumors about COPS. Legates from other some what populous organizations have made assumptions about COPS and presented these as facts. In every case these people are wrong and only serve to create drama. There is no reason for all the hate I have received and COPS has received. Groups formed, factions aligned. Power corrupted. For all the efforts to save our species, the millennia we traveled, we reverted almost instantly back to that old human nature. Not even extinction could change our habits, our instinct. We have all been there. Watching and witnessing the mega-corporations metastasize and feed off the livelihood of the less fortunate. Class warfare, poverty, slavery...being forced to work by some clown sitting at the top of his ivory tower barking commands. I’ve had enough of it, most likely so have you. It’s time to break from those chains and live a free life. It ain’t easy, ain’t too much glory, but it’s honest (for the most part) and fair. We are a coalition, a collaboration, a consortium, a conspiracy, a communion, a clan, a crew, a club, a confederation, a confederacy collecting cohorts connected, conjoined, combining efforts to be a free people, free from tyranny, terror and totalitarianism. WHAT IT'S LIKE: Ever want to pilot the Millenium Falcon? Ever dream to have a crew who works together like Firefly? You want to be that solo guy who searches for bounties like Boba Fett and his Slave I? This is how we dream to play and we intend to play this way. However Dual may require efforts from a larger group. If this is true, we just want to have a system in place so that people can come together to fullfill their visions. We want solo play, but under the safety net of a larger organization. WHAT WE ARE NOT: ​We are NOT GRIFERS. COPS are pirates, smugglers, outcasts, ninjas, mercenaries in the ROLE play sense, NOT in the griefing sense. THE BREAKDOWN: • Enrollment: Some will get invited, some will inquire. If you want to be part of a free alliance just ask. • Primary language: English and gibberish. • Timezone: Only mega corps keep up with time. • Goal: Solo or co-op gameplay within a larger group. We all like to do our own thing, but somtimes you need to be part of something larger or you will get left behind. COPS is an organization created and designed to bring together like minded people who prefer to play solo without constraints of typical guild requirements (be here on X day, at Y time to raid Z...ya its tiresome). We realize people have limited time to play and that real life takes place first. That being said, Dual Universe looks like this might be a game where cooperation and collaberation are keys to success. If we find this to be true, there might be more expected collaborative gamplay required. We don’t want to force anything on anyone, but just ask people to step up if it is required to do so. In the end it’s not about making a large guild rich, its about making sure your needs are met, our mutal needs are met. We endevor to create an enviroment where co-op game play is actually fun and rewarding. SO WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU? • Security: Safety in numbers. • Community: A network of people to work together with if so desired. • Freedom: Free to play your way but with the undertanding that freedom requires effort and work. There will be times we need to work together, its the only way to keep an alliance strong. • A Trade network. Not sure how Dual is going to work with trade, but within a group there will be communication lines. We will be able to trade with each other and help keep our alliance strong. • Veteran ship builders: We have members who have crafted some of the finest voxel ships to ever exist. Our fleet will impress, this I can promise. • Veteran home builders: We have members who have crafted some of the finest voxel sci-fi mega structures to exist. Our home world wont look like a cut rate hostel. • PVP: Lets face it, even if you only care for PVE, PVP might and will happen at some point. If you intend to fly in a ship, once you are out of the ark safe zone, pvp will happen. We intend to create smart ship designs that will help to ensure pvp victories, but you will need to know how to fly it. • PVE: We know some people have no interest in PVP. Hopefully we can get a civilization started with trade, harvesters, crafters etc. It’s good to have folks who specialize in these categories. • Exploring: It’s at the heart of Dual Universe, of course we will explore! • If i can be done in Dual, we intend on experiencing that content in one way or another. GOVERNMENT: Don’t really intend on having some massive over inflated group of power hungry people running the show. I have no interest in that, however there does need to be a head or some form. Castles have kings, homes have breadwinners. Even a pack of wolves looks to their Alpha. I intend on holding the main key of power or have it distributed among a very close group of friends. Those who know me know I fight tooth and nail for the little guy, for honesty and integrity. I have no intent on telling you how to play or what to do...but internal conflicts will occur and those will need to be resolved. We want everyone to be happy and to play together...its the best recipe for success. If COPS sounds like a style of gamplay that you find appealing, speak to Kiklix or LadyAstrum.
