Part of the design of this game is that it's about civilization building.  In order for a civilization to be built there has to be some level of difficulty to travel and resource gathering and services people can perform that have some value to other people.

Why?  Because if you can go anywhere and do everything without having to expend any effort or time or resources to do it then you will and not stick around other people... not rely on those other people... not interact... and no civilization occurs.

The amount of resources and the time it takes to gather them and possibly process them into building materials could be balanced for quick movement or slow movement.

I for one think it should be on the slow side.

Looking at some recent interviews and stuff.

At release player customization will probably be fairly simple... male/female and gear...  More complex character creation is the second stretch goal on the Kickstarter.

I strongly desire immense amounts of character customization.  And if the ability to do so expands with time... then the ability to change existing characters to take advantage of the new features needs to exist.  I think such things could easily be explained as a genetic "barber shop"

The more character customization the better I say.  But only humans at launch makes sense.  I'd love to see aliens down the road added as playable with an expansion or something.

But consider the technology levels at play here.  In the real world we're on the verge of some incredible genetic modification advances.  It's slow going as it's not something you want to mess up...  But such technology could be perfected and common place in the Game world.  So imagine that you're still classified as human but you can make yourself blue... or red... or give yourself horns or cat ears or fur or scales or a tail... even gills...  The possible combinations that a human could have could be huge.  And you could have genetic modification stations like hair salons in other games...

If they do that though... the aliens will have to be pretty... well... alien if and when they are introduced.  They wouldn't be able to be Human shaped with familiar animal characteristics because humans would already have done that.

Local voice that falls off with distance... which does take into account the intervening walls to even further reduce it.

Voice modulation so those who wish to play female or male characters can make their character sound as close to the way they want as possible.

Radio transmission like mechanics... so you can call an individual... hail 1 ship... or broadcast to the whole area... as well as create "encrypted" private channels for your group to organize...

Yep I want all of that.  I don't want to use third party programs to get some of the above functions... I want it built into the game.

There will be "docking" elements.  Using them you could build a ship and dock other ships to it... like say... small shuttles or fighter craft.

So you'd build all the ships separately.  The carrier ship and the small craft you wish to dock to it.

In the version of the game I played at PAX last week... docking elements weren't in the game yet.  Hopefully they will be in soon.

I want decals... lots of them.  User created ones too... I'd prefer to be able to directly upload my own but I can see that potentially being a problem so... maybe have a contest every few months where 20 decals submitted by the community get added to the game.

Any way... I want to be able to drag, scale, and place such decals onto anything I own.  Clothes... ship parts... my characters skin...

It annoys me greatly when character creation has jewelry and tattoos but they can only be toggled on or off... you can't move them... combine multiple... rotate or scale them up or down.  Really frustrating.

That's more a statement on the sad state of the world at the moment where the human right to freedom of speech is being attacked in some places... and out right violated in others.  This thread is about whether we think Censorship coming from the Devs separate from any player driven game system is good or bad.  I say it's bad.

It will occur... it has to due to the sad state of the world... and the particularly restrictive laws where they are based... But that has no barring on the discussion at hand.

Yes you can make stuff like in your picture.  I think even the "floating" disconnected bits.

Unless they've changed it back... But ever since that was stated in a video like a year ago... I've been thinking about making Anime Esk ships with wings... weapon mounting points... whatever... that sorta float next to the main body or have gap joints...

I fail at describing things... so it took me a while to find something kinda like what I want to make... Something that isn't this but has that disconnected look.

Given how easy it is to relay info... and how hard it is to track if someone did... and lack of much that could be done to a person that did.  It will be a long hard battle to gain a reputation and trust.  Any violations of trust... would have your org blacklisted forever no matter what actions you took against your member.

The desire to have an org that archives and reports on events in game is good.  But the idea that you'll have camera people there to observe is a hard thing.  You could request an org make their own recording and send the video to you after.  I just don't see neutral camera ships being allowed anywhere near a battle.

neutral player?  yes.  Or who belongs to a neutral faction?  yes.

Alt of a player with unknown allegiance?  No.

In theme park MMOs I'm and alt-aholic.  I like making characters and playing them based on the personality I make up for them.  But in a game where we make the factions... and PvP and inter faction wars can have real painful consequences... Alts... as spys is a real threat.  Simply being present ... even without weapons or defenses can provide another faction with valuable information.  Like numbers and types of ships present... shipment times... and or what's being discussed on the local open channels...

Letting in a player from a neutral faction to trade is a calculated risk.  And you can bar them from going places you don't want them. ...

Some group made up of alts... who's players main characters may belong to warring factions?  No... they're not going to be let into areas that traders wouldn't have access to just because they have no weapons.

Basically my problem with the idea boils down to it being alts.  If such an org wanted to cover things and required its members to not have any other characters...  Throwing out those it finds violating that...  Such an org might be granted access.  Having them be alts though opens up too much risk of spying.

Having another set of eyes watching and relaying ship positions or warning of a ship in hiding about to flank you provides real advantages even if they are not actively fighting in the battle.

Any org engaged in a battle should treat all ships not their own as enemy combatants and destroy them.

In the real world Police ask News Crews not to broadcast live or report on their movements during active shooter or hostage situations.  Doing so could tip off the bad guy that Police were about to move in... and cost lives.

In game there is no way to ensure that a "neutral observer" isn't relaying info to the enemy.  They could be screen sharing... or be in their teamspeak... or other viop program... So neutral observers should not be tolerated by any org during a battle.  Nice orgs might give you 1 warning command to leave before opening fire.

Fitorion got a reaction from Kurock in Pay-2-Win: Does it have a definition at all?
P2W is paying to gain an advantage that another could not achieve through other means.  The second part is important.

I could see a slight modification to the second part... like say "that another could not achieve or would require such an onerous set of tasks as to be essentially impossible through other means."

But if one makes that alteration the definition of what an "onerous set of tasks" is comes into debate... and can be whittled down to just anything anyone doesn't want to do... rather than a particularly unpleasant and long thing.

Under some interpretations DAC may be slightly pay to win...  But the question I have is... Is that too bad of a thing that it offsets the benefits?  After all no game is devoid of pay to gain advantage options... even those who actively try to ban them... people still pay third parties and risk either being banned or having their accounts hacked.  Free people will exercise their freedom and rebel against efforts to restrict them.  The only way to exercise any semblance of control and maintain stability is to provide a structure in which the activities those playing want to engage in can be engaged in.

this isn't primarily a space exploration game... it's a civilization building game.  While it's set in a scifi setting and some exploration is necessary to expand to new territory for the civilization to grow... If you're expecting a free roaming space exploration game... you'll be disappointed.

Fitorion got a reaction from maximpact in Dealing with Griefers/Resource Depletion
    1. There's no Collision Damage.  In interviews all over the place they specifically call out the idea of making a ship to ram another ship and how they will not allow that to be possible.  Ships simply bounce off each other without doing any damage.

    2. Safe zones exist.  Safe zones can be created by players and will last as long as said player maintains them.  So safe trading spaces can be set up for a price.  If you don't have a safe zone set up then you are vulnerable... which is a reason for you to join an organization so they can protect your stuff while you're offline.

    3. Resource depletion is necessary to drive population to move out and explore.  As the area near you gets depleted you must travel farther out to find resources and new settlements to trade in goods will have to be constructed and protected... This is the Game Play of the game.  It's how real civilizations grow and it's how civilization will grow in the game as well.

At the launch of the game ... unless something has changed... ship to ship combat will not exist.  The only combat will be on the ground person to person.  Eventually they'll add ship to ship... but the point is at the start the potential for mass destruction is limited.  If they do get Ship to Ship combat in then safe zones will be very important and drive people together to form communities.

Everyone being spread evenly over a planet... solo... building by themselves... not interacting with anyone else is a bad thing.  Combat... resource depletion and costly to maintain safe zones are mechanics to drive people together and will be what makes this game work.

    If they introduced explosives...

It could be balanced in such a way that it's not much faster than clicking on the wall... but so much more fun.

Like the time it takes to gather a given number of resources by clicking ... say 10,000 is the same as the time it takes to set up the explosive charges... trigger them... and then run in to pick everything up.

But the differences in positioning and timing of each explosive is different each time... it's an engaging puzzle that's different every time.  Plus you get a cool explosion to watch and instant gratification of a massive amount of resources all at once... even if it's roughly the same efficiency as the other method.

I'm trying to come up with as many different methods for mining that relieve the monotony as possible.  Also ideas for ships and machines.

I'd love an asteroid mining ship that's basically a mobile factory that just sucks in asteroids to refine them.  In the Star Wars Expanded Universe before everything got dumped... there were these ships called World Devastators.  Huge mobile factories that sucked in materials... asteroid or planet surface... building or ship... and then used those materials to build robot Tie Fighters and repair itself.

As cool as having something like that in game would be...  It would suck for anyone who built anything on the surface without a safe zone generator... as one of these could come along and carve a 500m deep by 1km wide trench through whatever you were doing...

Resource mixing... and or pockets of rarer stuff surrounded by less rare stuff.

With mixing you could have 2 materials that need different techniques to gather right next to each other.  Requiring planning to maximize how much of each you can gather.

Pockets of more rare materials inside your lower rarity is just a nice surprise as you're going along.

I like the grain idea... Mining can be very repetitive... Something that makes it more intellectually engaging so you're having to stop every so often to rethink and plan your next move for increased yield would be most welcome.

Another way of doing that, may be to have several different types of Ore for the same refined material... and these ores need different tools to extract them... so as you're going along and the color of the ore you're mining shifts slightly and you're getting less stuff out of each hit... maybe it's time to switch to another tool.  This is very much like mixing...

There's got to be more ways...  I think it's got to be puzzling...  Not a really hard puzzle... but one with large amounts of variety and which isn't a literal puzzle...

Sudoku is a literal puzzle which isn't very hard yet has hundreds of thousands of variations.  Mining should in much the same way take a little bit of figuring to discern the proper path and be different each time.
