    Space Whales

this is a sad discussion that shows up at some time on every game page or forum, to me its not funny anymore. like hearing the same music for the hundredth time..lol
  2. Classes were mentioned I think we should ignore class altogether. Be what you want to be use what weapons you feel like using. No harnesses to keep us tied down in, just go for it and do what comes to mind day to day.
  3. The best way to do this would be shallow water worlds, less than 100 feet in places, so the sun could shine down and we could see the base and work around it ( not sure of the depth for sunlight but alien worlds would be very clean compared to ours) or varying depths with some shallows to build bases in and deep water elsewhere to explore.
  4. I like robots and auto-flying ships as AI enemies, that would be cool.Even AI drones at ground level...just no AI bodies for Humans..hehe.
  5. Get as complex as you like...I just mine...lol so the ores will be coming in. For a fair price.
  6. OK here's a thought, the devs need cash to do everything we ask...or a tiny bit they like anyways....so why not add a Donate button to the page? Even if I might not play it later on I would probably donate something for it, as would others, so what do you think people should we put our money where our mouths are, if even a couple bucks?
  7. If you use the Drake equation with the new figures we have today, I believe it says 50,000 civilizations in the galaxy. If you're going to limit the new colonies to a tiny speck of the galaxy then new civilizations might not be found. If you open the galaxy to exploration...its a sure thing eventually. so time and spacial limits have to be considered but thats all. And then we can consider that Humans, and those that look even close to them, are not the only entities in the galaxy, so I'd suggest nothing that stands up as we do, maybe snake like reptiles,or germ and bacteria shaped life that slides along or lives in oceans..just some ideas.
  8. A comment on the original discussion, my opinion...no... no AI robots to live in, no sentient androids with super powers and indestructible bodies. That might not have been mentioned yet but trust me it would be.People like to find a way to cheat every game, so why not an immortal, indestructible body while others plod along as Humans? Sorry, no AI bodies to play in.
  9. Melee in futuristic games or the future itself will have little to no reason. If your talking the Waring States Era, ok, but even the American Civil war was fought 90% with ranged weapons. so the future with melee? Only if the End comes and we have to start all over. These discussions are a hold over from Star Wars and light sabers.
  10. Miner, gatherer and businessman. Selling to anyone with the credits, maybe getting a few blue prints and building and selling weapons or maybe space ship parts, lots of money to be made when a large number of players are gun crazy...lol Here's hoping for lost ships on death.
  11. in one or two games I've played they had orbiting weapons platforms, made especially for defense, large stations made just for weapons and defenses, firing automatically at any enemy in range. Both missiles and particle cannons depending on the distance from the station the enemy ships were.they were made in different sizes depending on what type of defense you were willing to pay for.
  12. read this whole thing, why not sure, same ideas every time every game, swords in a time of nukes..ok, if that's how you roll...lasers that overheat, of course in today's technology, but this is how far into the future? So their weapons probably wont even look like ours at all, but people forget that little thing...Time...so the debs might surprise the hell out of us all if they are serious about their future. Things not mentioned: Biological weapons, grenades that kill by infection, only living humans nothing else. Pyrotechnics weapons...fire cures all ills especially at close range Computer viruses, kill by shutting down power to oh, I don't know....life support? Makes boarding clean and easy after a couple hours when their suits air run out Hacking ships controls, watch them bail after it starts into an atmosphere Drive herds of animals crazy with sound waves and drive them into a colonists town to feed...lol Just a few ideas off the top of my head.
  13. hehehe, before we worry about how to pay our monthly's I think we should at least see the game once or twice. Lets wait to see how all this plays out in game before we worry about who will pay what...there might be a lot of empty space if people dont like the way it starts out.
  14. I strongly doubt that running scripts to aim weapons and fire turrets will use fuel. That's a bit of an exaggeration. If our ships use that much fuel for common easy to understand things like auto targeting and firing turrets then they use WAY to much fuel in general. If they do then the game will fail, simple as that, no one wants a game where they need to micromanage every tiny detail every time they stop at a station. That's why many games say that Fusion Reactors run the ships, they are fueled when they are bought, and only need refueled once every few years, unless you're an explorer that never sits still. Space combat games I've played since back in the 90's all use similar things so that people can play and have fun. Managing little things gets tedious and is not fun. Fuel loading and reloading? Done automatically when we dock, and we don't even have to think about it, that's playing and having fun...go ahead and add a fuel costs... if its reasonable, but make it too expensive to play and people wont stay, that's all there is to it.
  15. sounds interesting here. BUT...I've been playing games and MMO's for 20 years. I've been in Societies, Gilds, and Unions on many different games. But remember, we all start out as solo players. Some stay that way for a few hours, some for days and weeks. Its their choice. I see people saying that solo player and ...by hinting seriously ...people in general...cant do what groups can do. Who made and invented Microsoft? Some big research team at a major corp? Nope, some of the richest people on the planet are solo people, people that went it alone and made it big. Its not any more impossible for a player to build a custom cruiser that everyone wants alone rather than sponging off friends to get it done then selling it himself. If I see new player enter a game and 2 minutes later start asking...begging...to join a group I feel sorry for them, they admit openly they are worthless alone, how sad for them. In an open world game people can do what they want, and should. I believe in helping others, I have many times, but when I joined groups one person stood by saying 'go here , do this, do that' and did little or nothing themselves. I will help others, but demand from me and you'll be fighting alone. Period. If you need a big group great, I'll watch and see what you accomplish as a group, and if its truly grand I'll applaud you all, or whoever takes credit for it all at least. But dont think for a second a single person cant do well, as Elon Musk or the many like him, I dont see him taking a back seat to some group he 'needed' to win, and we shouldn't think people here should need one either.
  16. Hmm I didnt see my idea here yet so try this...in the future we will have technology that we only dream about today. So...miners never need to tunnel because their machines transport ore from underground via some sort of teleporter system, and in space projectile weapons get their ammo from passing bits of metal rich rock and the ammo that get stored in the weapons area or storage for cargo. Projectiles are nothing but bullets and in space armor piercing would the rule of the day, so iron ore works perfectly and a small automated teleporter beam ( made into every ship at the factory) can be used to gather cargo found floating or ore found as the ship flys along. The finished bullets gets stored until needed and get loaded automatically until they run out. Thats it...projectile weapons of the future most likely will be magnetic cannons or the like, so iron bullets are simple to make and get.
  17. I think it should ,if possible, be up to you. If you have enough friends to man your ship every time you go into the game and get to play that way fine. But most people cant coordinate that well or might have friends in different time zones, so I think if you need a crew it should be either NPC or player, since many will prefer NPC so they will always be there when you need them.
  18. This far into the future and AI will either be everywhere (built into everything commercially) or made to look like anything we might want. So, an AI navigator, or engineer...or a dag that follows you around with the IQ of twenty Einsteins...lol there would be almost no limit to what an AI companion could be.
  19. I also agree that building planets is too much. There has to be some limit, we are people in a new galaxy or new world, we aren't Gods, so planet building should still be fa ntasy and not possible for us, especially starting out again after a huge move. Planet building, if possible at all would take millions of years, thousand with an entire civilization working on it.Just think about Terraforming, only on a bigger scale, since nothing is there to start with.
  20. When it comes to fuel in space ships I feel we are thinking too much about whats possible today. In a hundred years physics will be completely different and what we think of as average will be antiquated by then. New engines, new fuels and new ideas will be mainstream and if we are talking about fuel in space to be mined and used, why not etha ne or methane in some highly efficient future engine? Maybe a high performance Ion drive, or Plasma reactor drive? Something we know nothing of today. But ethane, methane and other fuels are abundant in space, entire moons, asteroids and planets covered in liquid or frozen fuel, so it makes sense that the future would use that since its already available.
  21. In other words, nothing can be perfect at everything. You cant build a ship that's both stealthy and fast like a scout and still have the firepower of a battleship. Its just not possible. so plan for the type of ship you truly like and go with that, because if every ship could be the best at everything, there would only be one design.
  22. OK while some here don't seem to think past what we know now...let me say that out there, in space...we know nothing. There could well be man eating animals on nearly every planet, we don't know. Plants and trees already and grassy fields, we don't know, and races that aren't even close to human looking, there's a real chance they exist somewhere. Maybe not on the first planet we see, but one of them thereafter. Beings that evolved on other worlds could easily be out there, so Arkships are only a drop in the bucket of the Universe in an open universe exploration game.
  23. Like Tabula Rosa? a pve game turned pvp because a few hundred demanded it? It lost thousands of players in a year, that's a fact, and the pvp players stayed until the day they closed it...and I do mean THEY closed it. I was there from Beta until the last day...and saw it fall apart. When pvp player make up 20-30% of a game then they dont keep it going alone.
  24. Aquarion in a new Universe? Sounds like fun but not what I'd call a spaceship.
  25. wow, its been a while since I was in a real cat fight over pvp and pve. lol But here's my 2 cents worth...pvpers don't like pve because it gives some players a safe place to hide. Pvpers don't like that, they have egos to feed and so they want to kill anyone, anywhere at anytime. That alone chases a lot of people off of pvp games and to games where they can play...and spend their money...in safety. If there could be a compromise then fine, but that means people would need to agree to compromise, and I really doubt that will happen. It should also be mentioned that some devs are actually pvp players and thats why Indy companies build pvp games, knowing full well that there are dozens of them out there sucking up the few thousand pvpers that play regularly. I personally vote with my wallet and feet. If people listen when I ask things then I feel they are a little more mature than some games where people swear every second and say the same things over and over, even if they are proven wrong. If you're an adult, act like an adult. Just walk away and do something else. New games like this are coming out all the time, and some will surely be less radical than others, so we players always have a choice, and game devs that have a hard time getting more than a few hundred players see the error in their ways...eventually...the people making big money especially on fund raising sites, are the ones trying to add a little soemthing for everyone, and they get more cash to do it then when people know that...lol.
