There could always be automated defenses to blow them up.

Maybe in in the atmosphere have some set proportional scale based on mass. But defiantly not based on aerodynamics.

Unfortunately what Traceur says is all true. Uncapped speed limits are not something really feasible. About the closest we could hope for in that regards would be something along the lines of how Elite Dangerous does it, where you transition between speed "levels" of normal, sublight and FTL travel. Something like that is more doable than actual uncapped speeds.

I think they should at least look at implementing drag/heat due to friction. This has some PvP implications. Can you just warp from the surface of a planet to FTL to escape? I think having landing crafts to go to and from your orbiter/galaxy cruiser is a good idea and makes PvP more strategic. Also, if you implement heat due to friction, you have a mechanism to set reasonable/realistic speed limits once you are inside a planet's atmosphere.

Since this game will be cloud based for the single shard system, I would love to see integration with a mobile app and push notifications that can be set up to respond to in game events, such as a perimeter radar that notifies you immediately if someone comes in range or breaches your compound or ship.

That would provide the ultimate hook to lock me to the game. If I know someone is attacking my base, I would make every effort to be back on game as soon as possible to defend.

I hope so! I remember being a host on a radio station for The Matrix Online back in the day and having a ton of fun doing it. The game didn't support it, but it was one of the more popular stations that players listened to while playing.

    Also, welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the game! It seems you share most of the same sentiments I do about it. I'm a long time space engineers and EVE player and this game is appearing to be a combination of the two.

robofan16 reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Questioning Fleet Role: Carrier
    Hi everyone,

Thinking about carrier gameplay is indeed a very interesting idea .
(please bear in mind that, for now, nowhere we have confirmed there will be remote piloted ships in Dual Universe. While nothing might prevent make some, there was confirmation that it will be feasible either, for the time being).

And it will probably be quite efficient. However it might not be the ultimate strategy despite how it looks like at first glance:
    - Flying a swarm of drone-ish ships means your ships are fast and easy to manoeuvre. But it also means these ships will have light resistance, which can be easily countered by large "area of effect" attack, resulting quickly in the drone-ish ship destruction.
    - Gathering a big group of players in one single ship with strong shields and armor doesn't guarantee to be safe. In fact, in some cases, it's even the contrary: Combat won't probably be only a matter of firepower and defense. Electronic Warfare and Propulsion Jamming. Once the ship can't fire or move, even with strong defenses, it just a matter of time before the opponents succeed in destroying it. In many scenarios, it's better to have a fleet of medium-sized ships than one big ship, especially for this reason: it's much more difficult to immobilize/neutralize everyone

About AI drones: the use of this will be severely limited to make it far less efficient than a real player pilot. We want to see it as a "last resort" if you don't have enough people to complete a multi-player spaceship crew for example: we want it to do a decent job. Not an amazing job. So if AI drones or related stuff gives the feeling to the dev team of being overpowered (meaning having the same efficiency as a player or better) at some point, you can expect them to be nerfed.

But in any case, it's really exciting to see some unusual strategies discussed here!

    Hi Klatu & Saffi !

Really important and delicate topics here
    Here are a few answers:

    - About "Friendly Fire" and "Manual Targeting":
We would like to implement that. We really would like. But there a very high chance we won't, at least for now (maybe with computer technology evolving, it will change in the future). The fact that massively multiplayer single-shard sandbox games like EvE Online are able to reach several thousands of players at the same place and the same moment is possible due to some compromises (and while we are aiming to higher flexibility in this regard, we're still subject to compromises too): combat system using Targeting/Locking/Firing mechanics in this kind of game is not completely unrelated to the ability to create massive battles, as it's an efficient way to lighten a lot of real time combat calculations.

    - About "Bigger means more complex":
Well bigger ships will certainly be harder to destroy/invade if they're built in a smart way by players. However we do have some ideas to balance their toughness: They will be slower, less agile than smaller ships, due to their mass. Big Weapon Turrets will also at disadvantage against very fast ships. But nothing will prevent builders to create specialized ships: like a huge battlecruiser full of small weapon turrets to hunt down hostile small and fast ships. But there will be a choice to make: Energy consumption. Every module in a ship will require energy. So it won't be possible to have everything in infinite number, even on a big ship.

    - About "Terrain":
We have already planned to have asteroid belts (even if it won't be for the Alpha).
But having specific cosmic phenomenon producing side effects in some areas in space (like strong gravitational fields or ionized clouds) is a great idea. I will transmit it to the dev team!

    - About "Arms Diversity and Rock/Paper/Scissors":
This is already planned: We are thinking about weapon families, with each type of weapon very efficient in some cases and not very efficient in others. Right now we plan to have at least 4 different types of damage, but it might still change in the future.

    Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.

What do you mean by dormant performances?

And I was thinking about this more. They may push more of the CPU stuff to the servers and just push the clients the data to render. Meaning it would be more memory GPU heavy. They could go so many ways, I'm unsure of what's the best way for performance with a game this scale.

    Hello,
I could have sworn a youtuber I follow mentioned this game earlier this year, but I guess I didn't really understand what he was describing. As soon as I saw that trailer, my jaw dropped and I nearly peed my pants in excitement. This is exactly what I keep looking for in these kinds of games, and finally some people are coming through on what I expect.

Last year I got to be part of the bug testing for Empyrion before the release of the pre-alpha, and from getting to talk with those devs and listening to the dev videos of Space Engineers, this is basically what all those devs were imagining but haven't and probably won't for some time accomplish. The mechanics, the look, the feel, the combat, are all sounding to be superior in every way. I don't think I'll ever need another game like this if it turns out to be what they say.

I can't wait to find some similarly minded people around and playfully speculate on the crazy possibilities this game "may" allow...

BTW, I wonder if maybe some day they may implement some sort of advanced sound block that could allow you to modulate it in real time and play sequences of sound bytes, so then you could have in-game DJs...

    Hi everyone,

On this topic, we have already in mind a list of possible physical goodies that might be included in the kickstarter pledges:
    - Poster
    - Postcard
    - Sticker
    - Arkship Passenger ID Card
    - T-shirt
    - Keychain
    - 3D Print
    - Physical Artbook
    - Original Soundtrack CD
    - Dual Universe USB Key

Of course, we remain open to other ideas!

Important: materializing these ideas will depend on several factors.
We will need to find the appropriate partners to make these goodies
The cost will need to be decent as it would kill the purpose of asking help through crowdfunding if physical rewards take a part too big of the pledges.
The involved goodie needs to be popular enough among the community.

To have an online store where we would sell Dual Universe goodies is an interesting idea too.
However, we don't see this as something we would have right for the alpha. This costs a significant amount of money to put such thing in place. And we currently prefer to put that money in developing the game.

    Best regards,
    Nyzaltar.

Hmm. Interesting. With a possible infinite amount of people you would expect prices to drop as sales go up. But I assumed as more people ventured in an area more would sell their data, dropping prices for that info more. But if you are the only one to a location then it's rare data and worth more, until people venture that way more. This would allow you to make a better profit on new data and not just somewhere everyone is.

But having a limited number of copies is interesting. Each scan yields maybe 5 copies of the data, keep it or sell it all off. Better equient will yield more copies, but it will always be finite. Rapidly developing places will have higher demand for updated maps, but also likely more people are making them. It would split groups into the true explorers and just the urban surveyors.

I did eleude to the fact it would be data at that time. Having a date of when it was taken would be useful to determining how accurate it is. Maybe when you warp in there's a massive military base built there.

Hi Klatu and Vylqun! The vision you have about exploration is, for the most part, the same we have at Novaquark.   @Klatu:   Explorer specialization won't be just for the sake of exploring. Of course, we plan to make it as insteresting as possible for people who just want to discover new horizons, but we plan to do more than that.
Indeed, we plan Explorer specialization as a viable way to make a living in the game, exactly how you described it: Explorers will often be the ones to gather resources, but they will have also another kind of income: trading information about resource locations through contracts (which will be a practical use of the RDMS, Rights & Duties Management System).
Yes, players (especially the first wave) will start the game starved of data. There will be minimal info even about the starting planet, Alioth, at the beginning. We want to generate naturally player demand about map data that way. Explorers will also be - most likely - Cartographers of the planet but also of the surrounding space (first Alioth's solar system, and then the galaxy surrounding it!). The known areas will grow accordingly with player exploration speed.
The size of the game universe is virtually unlimited. That's the point of having a procedurally generated Universe. We don't want players to be at some point blocked or slowed down due to lack of content to explore. This might be described in a more detailed way in the future, on the DevBlog.
Explorer specialization will be possible on two axis (like any other specialization): Training skills and crafting (or buying) gear more and more efficient.   All in all, we have the goal to make any specialization fun to play, but also - and we think that's what is lacking in many games - meaningful in a massively multiplayer game world, that each player find useful to group together, either for having complementary skills or to make a big corporation specialized in one activity and selling their services for large-scale ingame projects!   @Vylqun:   Crafting will imply intermediary states between raw resources and a finished products. That's why you will have "alloys" and "parts". The way of learning new "recipes" (we should avoid to use the word "skillbook" here, to avoid confusion with learning new skills) is still under discussion in the team. Crafting will most probably be the topic of a DevBlog post in the future
If all goes well, yes, Explorers should be as much popular with Scientists/Researchers as with Industrialists/Crafters   Best Regards, Nyzaltar.

robofan16 reacted to NQ-Nyzaltar in Forum Rules
We want this forum to be a place where everyone feels empowered to have an open and friendly discussion with us (the Novaquark team) as well as other community members.  To help make this possible we have created rules we feel will keep things positive and ensure that proper netiquette is observed.

By posting on this forum, either publicly or through private message or other means, you explicitly agree to follow the rules and guidelines posted here. If you do not agree with these rules – in whole or in any part – then do not post. All members will be treated as if they have read and understood these rules and guidelines.

    (I) Be respectful and courteous.
The Dual Universe forums and community site are provided for Dual Universe players and those interested in discussing topics directly related to Dual Universe. We understand that community members may disagree with each other, and even with us, but we expect opinions to be expressed in a reasonable and polite manner.  It is important to maintain an atmosphere of civility and respect, so that all voices may be heard.

    (II) Communicate constructively.
All communication, whether between players, moderators or Dual Universe staff, must be constructive. Posts without constructive commentary can distract from the topic at hand, reduce the visibility of valuable communication, and discourage others from participating in the conversation.

    (III) Following actions are prohibited:
Posting off-topic replies or replies that are likely to drag the discussion off topic. Necroposting on old threads (unpinned threads in which the last reply is older than 2 months). Spamming on a specific topic. This includes creating multiple discussions on the same topic in the same or multiple forums. Cross-posting a specific reply. This is also a form of spamming. Posting an image without a meaningful text. A meme is not a response to a discussion. They are usually disruptive and can be easily misinterpreted. The same is true for animated GIFs. Calling out other players or community members by name to shame them for actions or opinions you may disagree with. Naming and shaming is not tolerated. Posting in any manner that disrupts an official thread. Official threads are topics created by the Novaquark team for the purpose of collecting feedback and opinions. Threatening legal action. Unfortunately, this kills all conversation immediately as we must refer all further discussion to our legal team. To preserve the conversation intact and unaltered these types of responses may be immediately archived. Trolling (provoking) people. Flaming (insulting, attacking) people. Picking fights isn’t a good way to make your point. It usually means you don’t have one and are just trying to cause trouble. Using profanity. Including creative spelling or character substitution to bypass word filters. Using the report system in an abusive manner. This is a form of harassment and a tremendous waste of time for both staff and moderators. Discussions and comments involving real life politics, ideology or religion. These can be incendiary topics and will usually lead to inappropriate behavior and uncomfortable situations. Publicly posting any private discussions, conversations, or other material between a user and a Novaquark employee (confidentiality policy). Refusal to follow the directions of Novaquark staff or representatives.
The use of an alternate account to circumvent a forum suspension is forbidden at all times. Additionally, the use of alternate account(s) to influence or misrepresent opinions is strictly prohibited. All forum accounts must adhere to the forum rules and Code of Conduct. Failure to comply can result in disciplinary actions against all associated accounts.

Violating these guidelines may trigger a warning, followed by either a temporary or permanent suspension of forum privileges depending on the severity and frequency of the violations.

(IV) The following actions may result in the immediate suspension of forum privileges:
There are some actions severe enough to result in immediate temporary or permanent suspension of posting privileges without prior notification. Serious or sustained offenses may result in suspension of not only the user's forum account but game account as well.

Threatening other members or Novaquark staff. No, “just joking’ is not a defense. We take this very seriously. Publicly revealing account or personal information of any person, community member or Novaquark staff. Posting harmful links pointing to viruses, malware, worms or trojans. Posting sexually explicit content. Including posting links to such content. Hate speech is not tolerated in any form. Attacking any ethnic group, religion, gender or sexual preference/identity. Promoting exploits, cheating programs, piracy or any sort of illegal activity. Attempt to impersonate Novaquark staff or another member of the community.
Violations of these rules may result in further steps taken with outside authorities or agencies. This may include your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and local or national Law Enforcement agencies.

    (V) Abide by moderators and Novaquark employee’s instructions.

If you disagree with a moderator or employee's actions, do not discuss or challenge the matter in forum posts. Send an e-mail to forum@novaquark.com, and be sure to include your forum handle (name displayed on the forum), but NOT your password, and clearly state your concerns.
