  1. @Zamarus I understand what you tried to imply, but what you see as pointless or invalid might be just the opposite to someone else. You don't have to like it, or even participate in those discussions, but you don't have any right to discourage them either. The Good Ol' Boys Club in this forum is no doubt strong, but it's not divine. If NQ delivers, I plan on doing everything the game has to offer. I'll likely suck at all of it, but excelling isn't really my goal. Having fun is. As for the game, there is a belief that it will be "player driven" and "emergent" game-play will dictate how the game develops. Those buzzwords are the basis for much of the pro PvP arguments in this thread. Players will be allowed to do whatever they want, including ganking and griefing because in theory, if players don't like it, they can organize and fight it... which is really just the other side of a PvP deathmatch, but regardless, NQ decided that PvP won't be allowed in certain areas. They also said they would intervene if needed. So, isn't the whole PvP freedom already crippled? Why not do away with the safe zones altogether?
  2. You're using "seems like" as a way to discredit the value of other's input. It's insulting no matter how you try to disguise it. I have no beef with you personally, but the behavior is unbecoming. Spoken as if care-bear concerns aren't welcome on the game's official forum. As for the topic, that last bit pretty much says it all.
  3. Certainly. Although, every 3rd year, there will be a culling of sorts to keep population numbers in the safe zones under control. A handful of players will be forced into PvP territory where they will either fight, or die. Survivors are allowed to return to the safe zones if they so choose.
  4. NQ built a custom engine to handle a single shard voxel based universe. They also sacrificed popular twitch based PvP mechanics in favor of a single shard voxel based universe, where everything is player built, and PvP will come later in development. So there is that. My biggest concern with PvP is that I can load up an alt and grief newbies all day long. When a hired merc or security force comes along and kills me. I can load up another alt and continue getting my jollies. I'd like to hear a player driven solution to that behavior?
  5. Hello Johan. This is Sam at the Allioth Mecantile, we're running low on beer nuts. Please send more with the next shipment. Thanks.
  6. Little pockets of commerce, surrounded by vast expanses of no man's land. I hope the safe zones are marked by purple unicorn icons on the maps.
  7. Never played Ark, but what are some of the mechanics that PvP players take issue with?
  8. We are on the same page. One style of player has to avoid the other. One style of play will dictate all others. That is basically what it boils down to. You can say it a different way, but it's still the same thing. I started this whole thing because I was curious how (if) DU was going to address PvP dominating the game. The concept of building a world from the ground up, the good bad and ugly all in one place... except that isn't how it's going to be. Case and point, a few safe zones for non-PvP, and everywhere else for PvP. There is certainly opportunity for various forms of game play to co-exist outside of safe zones, but the greifers, gankers, thieves, and all other manner of scum and villainy... will always have a clear advantage with only their alts to lose, and a constant stream of newbies to fund their trade. The hope was that DU might try and be different in that regard.
  9. The gist of this whole thing seems to be that a game with PvP, has to be played like a hard core PvP game, regardless of other content. There are dedicated non PvP games and dedicated PvP games, but a game with both is decidedly PvP.
  10. so the guy with the burned house should have played differently BECAUSE the guy next door was a psycho? Your side of the argument is that one person gets to play however they want, and other people don't. Seems about right.
  11. WOW! Good discussion here, so far... What gives ones player the right to take whatever they want from another player? It's not PvP that is the issue, it's the attitude on display that gives PvP a bad name, and for very good reason. Exactly. A PvP player out ganking and griefing infringes upon those players that aren't into ganking and griefing. Two different styles of play yes, but one directly interferes with the other. It's not a two way street. The gankers and greifers think it is, and they are wrong. yes, that ^ and back to this. Two people build houses. One person burns the other person's house down and laughs hahaha, welcome to the neighborhood. In order to prevent that, the other person should have become an asshole first? PvP doesn't have to be all about getting more kills than the other guy.
  12. Folks looking to use bumping/exploits like in Eve, pointless killing sprees like in Eve, I think it's fun to kill other players and then give their stuff back (typical Eve), some will kill you on day 20 and ask you for help on day 21 (Eve), stay in the safe zone if you are so scared, we don't need good reasons to destroy things, get over it, we can't all be nice people... and don't forget to load up your alts. Sigh. I was hoping for more.
  13. What part of PvP matters in this game? I want to be farming in a forest and see big space ships flying overhead and feel small. Not threatened. Is that possible?
  14. I think the OP was suggesting sliders to adjust different elements of the provided engine noises, not custom imported sounds. Assuming the engine sounds have multiple elements, though not sure they do. I really like the idea. I mean, customization is a key element of this game and variations in sound would go a long way in adding variety.
  15. That is what they intend. Less emphasis on low pings and twitchy reflexes.
  16. This is a cool idea. You should have interviews with note-able members of other organizations.
  17. The consequence of finite resources will no doubt be war. Civilizations will rise and fall. Economies will thrive and collapse. Eventually it's gonna be Mad Max on a galactic scale. In the mean time though, day 1 through say day 12, should be a lot of fun.
  18. @ThatAlex - Welcome aboard! Hope to see you around in the universe some day.
  19. Policy? The only thing that matters is that you give me what you promised, and I give you what I promised.
  20. I listened to this a few times while working today. Can't decide if it was cheating, or moonlighting, or insubordinate... I just feel so much more prepared for tomorrow.
  21. I feel like money will rule the new world. There is nothing that money can't overcome. I want to be allied with the richest org out there. My services, however meek, are always available to you because you are the most likely to pay me. Just sayin.
  22. that is an enormous f'ing document. It will likely take me quite some time to consume it.
  23. Just saying, orgs have it backwards. They're out there advertising their awesomeness, but everyone knows their awesomeness doesn't even exist yet. Orgs need to start actively recruiting. Hey, hey you... we've been watching you, and we want you on our team.
  24. I don't know whether to bow to your knowledge, or laugh at your arrogance. EVE has been around for a billion game years. It has a society and culture. Do you really think DU is capable of such a feat?
