Unless getting into space is difficult, launch-assist megastructures will be out of the question, and space seems pretty easy. This means no space elevators, mass drivers, orbital rings, or lofstrom loops. This leaves us with larger megastructures which will take like a decade in real life to build not considering the lack of property protection so far.

I don't know if discord is the best way to implement voice com's in the game... however it would serve as a great starting point, before they manage to create a proper voice com thingy

AlexCout reacted to wizardoftrash in Scanning
Scanning will end up being such a backbone mechanic of the game, that it will end up being an entire skill discipline. To have such an element that can 100% successfully locate everything, a necessary caveat would be that it would only be usable by someone with a maximum or very very high scanning skill, or else it would defeat the purpose of that skill in a way that isn't present for the other skills.

For example, if it did not have a high scanning skill requirement to use, Then an org could simply slap that puppy on all of their ships and never need to recruit anyone with a high scanning, thus making the scanning skill useless. There isn't a way to "buy" your way out of needing the gunnery skill, or a flight skill, or a refining skill, so why should there be a way to bypass the scanning skill?

Given that scanning is such an important feature (and supposedly will be one of the more fun parts of mining), why cut that whole process out by adding an element that does it for you?

And as NQ said, it will be added. But probably after release with a patch.
And to me this makes sense because you would only need such a feature for very expensive (=huge) ships. And as such ships won't pop up until way after launch (because of economy), you don't really need such a feature pre-launch

My dislike for "improve-by-use" skill systems in MMO's stems from the fact that it inevitably leads to AFK botting, especially in PVP games, where people fear "falling behind" other players who have more play time than them. before you know it, everyone's botting in an attempt to either stay ahead or to catch up.

EVE and DU's planned time-based training means you can play the game without having to spend hours repetitively grinding skills so that you can be "viable" in PVP.

The "(destroy) because we can" faction should keep consequences of their actions in mind though. Emergent game play works in all directions after all.

I mean just because you can doesn't automatically mean that you should. Seen it often in Minecraft where pissing off the wrong faction got you stomped into the ground. We did that a few times ourselves with people displaying random unprovoked aggression towards us.

You can apply the same principle to any sandbox game with competitive elements and reality as it is universal.

If you just act on impulses or generally take certain gambles or risks, expect to get burned or worse eventually. Of course, sometimes you may win, but it's about survival in the long run, isn't it?

No use winning a few battles if you lose the war and perish as group or larger faction.

I want to give my opinion on everything, so I'll put them in categories.

Mega-Structures: I love the idea of Mega-Structures personally; It's a great way to test your building skills, and show off the wealth of an Organization. To some degree, it may even aid in the defense, since destroying large structures will take quite some time. I personally (not speaking on behalf of my Organization at all here), want to see or make either a space elevator, or a Dyson Sphere.

PVP: The game shouldn't be too PvP heavy. I will tell you know, if you are expecting it to be, lower your expectations so you aren't disappointed. If ships and constructs truly take so much time and resources to build; There is going to some serious levels of loss, and a life will be valuable. More so than other games like EVE, considering we actually have to mostly build them. I actually expect most combat to be player vs player, not construct vs construct; Lots of boarding and use of assault rifles.

Weapons: I do not believe that it will be 1 person per 1 weapon; From what I gathered there should be some degree of automation, though it'll be more inefficient than a player; I also believe you can use elements and LUA to tie multiple weapons together, to let a player control and fire a group of weapons as one. I also think while doomsday weapons are out of the question, there should be capital weapons in the future (Not too strong, wont blow a continent or planet up, but put a good hole in a cap ship).

Ship Selling: As for ships, being sold. While it is true, I cannot email a ship to you, once you purchase it; Nova Corporation does intend to flat out sell ships. We may even offer ship parking services for a daily, weekly, and monthly rate. Nova Corporation is here to make your life easier, and bring you a better tomorrow.

Mega-Structures: Topic is all over the place, but, I hope Mega-Structures are thing. I hope Solar Panels are a thing; It seems we can build a Mega-Structure, but the real question is just how far, could a Dyson sphere be possible? Lets try it in the Alpha/Beta tests!

    End.

This is not WoW. This is about humanity rebuilding itself.

Now, ask for transhumanism in the sense of cyborgs or mutations, now that's still humanity, although, humanity gone bananas.

Although usually not very active on the forums, I just wanted to take a moment to send out my regards to the ATV team and NQ wishing you both the best of luck this weekend. This test marks a significant milestone in dual universe’s development, and the whole community is praying for your success.
In particular to the ATV team, remember you represent all of us, the players. We share the same hopes and dreams for dual universe but the responsibility to help make them happen falls on your shoulders. How you conduct yourselves over the next two days and the months to come will influence both the quality and timeline of development. For every bug you find, for every concept you critic, you are paving the way forward towards our dream. To my surprise each and every ATV member I have interacted with has been a commendable individual worthy of respect, donating both their time and expertise towards promoting the game. The time has finally come for you to contribute in earnest and show us what you are really made of. I know you will make us all proud.

I invite others to comment below and offer their words of encouragement to our first group of pioneers.

I absolutely agree that PVP is a key feature in the game, but to say it is the most important feature is an overstatement. It defiantly needs to be present, and its the thing I'm most excited for above all else in DU too (I'm aboslutely jazzed to build military tech).

However, the destructive capability of individual players, and even groups of players, has to be pretty limited for a game to actually build anything that resembles a civilization. If it is too easy to destroy, and too difficult to create, then it would only take a few very destructive players to destroy the work of dozens and cripple entire cities. One of the many reasons we don't see large clans doing large scale battles in Space Engineers (apart from the fact that it would melt the servers) is because of how destructive ramming is. A dirt cheap ship can cripple a large station (built to withstand traditional weapons) just by ramming it at the normal max speed (which is pretty low).

In Eve though, its easy to repair and replace ships. It will be far harder to do so in DU, so for there to be player-built civilizations (as the devs intend) it will have to be harder to destroy than to create, and you can do that in a game.

Anybody who expects they will be able to play around a little, hop into a ship, and play through battle after battle after battle is totally delusional. There will be serious limitations in how many large fleets and large structures can be built in a given time, since it all needs to be made by players. Theoretically there will be a time where ships can be mass-produced in factories, but that will still be much more work and complexity than the click of a button.

I think we'll see that TU's and the ability to set protections and laws will have a serious impact on the number of "murder-hobo" players that'll enjoy the game. There will be parts of the universe that feel a bit more like Rust (where clans are routinely killing off newbies for little-no reson and raiding each other all the time), but those battles will be more like skirmishes and less like the huge wars in EVE.

Actually PVP is probably the most important feature in the game. It gives people a reason to build bases and ships, to group together, to conquer land, to explore and compete for resources, to create contracts and much more. It's also the only reason the economy can work: ships and bases will get destroyed, there'll always be jobs for miners, crafters, designers and tons of other people because of that alone.

Regtarding OP: there'll be megastructures and reasons to build those. Ships are physical objects always present in the game, there'll be huge stations/markets/hangars and so on to store them. Also items and materials need a lot of space, because you need to store them inside huge containers when in large quantities. Of course only bigger groups with tons of stuff and ships will need to build those.

I was pretty lucky and came into some money during the crowdfunding stage but id always planned to go gold. Its like people have said before, you just need to make a few changes in your spending habits for a short while. Even the most basic of savings will be enough.

i don't see why no PVP in the pr-alpha is a problem either. the game seems to be more than just a PVP game, id go as far as to say its not the main focus of the game so not having PVP right away isn't that surprising too me

I personally started eating cheaper, trying to not buy more than I truly need, and I have been able to handle the price of the gold founder...
Again the effort I'm doing might seems like a lot for ppl that don't know how to restrict their daily life, but in fact, it's easy,
and I still think that the support I was able to provide, even if it's not much compared to the 10k backers, is worth it...

Do not try to support them if you can't find enough dedication to get a bit out of your wallet,
you might not be able to afford it due to your conditions, and if it is the case, i'm sorry for you...
You also have to keep in mind that you would have needed a decent computer, and if you can't afford a 120€ pledge for a dream,
then it would be even harder to handle a computer to run this game ^^

For the supporter packs to be cheaper than the now complete founder packs would kind of be a big middle finger to us all.

I'm not sure what you expect. This isn't battlefield where you hop into the alpha/beta just to play a fun free game for a while. This is a game where you can be a part of it's development, and actually help the developers make and shape the game. NQ wants dedicated people in their alpha, not trolls who are going to play it so they can trash it on YouTube for hits from their drama hungry subscribers.

Everything is worth what people will pay. I bought silver and am satisfied. Yama bought kyrium, he is satisfied. We all pledged what we did because we can, because it's worth it to us, and because we want to be a part of the game as it grows. If you can afford it but don't want to pay that much... Well that is exactly the reason NQ set things the way they did, they want people that do think it's worth it. And if you literally cannot afford it, that is unfortunate, and I'm sorry. But as a great scientist will one day say, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

AlexCout reacted to hellfire999 in Ship Weapon systems?
One of the things about this game is that it is physics-based, which means the developers are looking at realistic weapons and how they should and would work in real life. Plasma is a material element in its hypothetical 4th energy state (Solid>liquid>gaseous>plasma). Plasma causes damage to other materials mostly through its extreme temperatures (usually about 3,000°f) but also by ballistic energy obtained by shooting it at high speeds. The problem with plasma is that it likes to dissipate quickly, especially in the vacuum of space. The way this can be solved is by "guiding" it using an electromagnetic "container" that effectively wraps around it, holding it together until it hits its target. Plasma is not explosive either. Its range is as far as it can go before dispersing. One thing that other games get wrong is that they portray space as being really cold. This is actually not true. Space is a vacuum. Heat travels only through matter. If you were to walk out in space without any protection, you would not freeze because your body heat couldn't go anywhere (you would, however, probably implode and/or suffer burning from direct contact with cosmic rays). Just another thought. Explosive things will have to come in the form of missiles/rockets or bombs (probably).
