While I think this could be cool once power comes in it certainly would be problematic under the current system. Should be interesting watching this develop.

I believe power requirements are coming into the game soon and that may play a role in what kind of bandwidth a core has available to equip elements. Maybe that will change this meta.

    I agree.

For one, there should be no arbitrary effect of controlling a certain number of hexes on a planet. Not that I think any single entity will ever be able to afford the territory claim units to cover a significant proportion of a planet, if the costs to do so are properly set by NQ; if the Quanta-to-place cost increases faster than linearly, it will become  more and more difficult to find the cash to place the next TCU.

Control would be defined by being able to exert one's will over an area. That can be achieved by negotiation, threats, simple obstruction, or any other tools of diplomacy. If you can enforce a blockade, you could be considered to have control of the celestial body. If you can persuade other people to pay (taxes/protection money) and acknowledge your control, you have control. Any mechanism that suddenly hands rights to an entity for 'proportion of land controlled' is nonsense and shouldn't even be considered.

Something to bear in mind: the British Empire, ranked largest ever in Wikipedia, could never have been considered in control of the whole of Earth. As the biggest human empire ever, in terms of area actually controlled, it had just over a quarter of the land area of the planet. This says two things to me:
no entity in DU should even begin to approach controlling a quarter of the hexes on a planet no entity in DU should directly control a whole planet.

Define, control?  What kind of game features are you looking for?

I don't think we need any coded feature for that though.  I would say you can control a planet as soon as you can defend it.

Actually no. The NDA being lifted means you can talk about the game now. Theoretical conversations however from before the NDA was lifted are also fine. It is just the game and what occurred with the game and NQ during that period would not be.  (This is NOT legal advice)

A similar topic was covered in another thread: "consequences of non-regenerating resources" if memory serves me correctly, but I will try to find it.

    Edit: here it is: https://board.dualthegame.com/index.php?/topic/7815-consequences-of-non-regenerating-planets-and-ressources/?hl=consequences

I don't know how I feel about terraforming. On the one hand, it could be a useful tool to enhance the landscape, but it could just as easily be utilized to create grotesque or dysfunctional terrain.

I completely understand the type of creativity that it could unlock, and yet it seems that it would almost remove as much as it adds.
Without being constrained to the lay of the land as it sits, there would be little reason to go find other planets other than a need for resources, lack of room, or just curiosity.
Plus, if you have to build with (or into) a landscape, you are forced to be more creative with how you do it.

At this point, the only really viable reason that I would like to see it is to repair the damage done by mining operations.
Best case scenario: the area was topographically scanned before mining occurred, and replacing the landscape is limited to restoring its original appearance.

Worst case: no scan, but a topography algorithm determines what kind of terrain may have existed based on the surrounding material and topographical scans of the area. You could then choose from one of its calculated suggestions, and are limited to that for terrain restoration.

I know this sounds like a somewhat immersion-killing concept, I mean, since when is it logical that you could only place a certain number of voxels in a given area, in a particular configuration? I just can't think of any other way to limit terraforming other than simply not having it. Whatever gets destroyed is gone for good.
It would give rise to some form of an in-game EPA, although hopefully a bit more realistic than the real one. (I know, an oxymoron, but true nonetheless. )

you could have it so the scanners only work underground in a specific radius projecting outwards like a ring e.g. (like when a stone is thrown into a lake) instead of projecting  outwards all around like a sphere.

Or have beacons placed around your underground base that when you use a scanner it pulses and they reflect back off the beacons.

I don't yet have 3 dimensional paper to map 3d tunnel in scale and with enough detail to ensure not hitting other chamber for example.

Then again we could all just draw our bases, ships and organisations on paper, role-play through chat or forum and save around 10-15€/month for not needing to pay DU when it comes out.

sorry no drills stark. what im really hoping for is some sort of conveyor system like space engineers to move around items, doing everything by hand may get annoying... depending on how much you can hold and how far your have to travel with it.

I think that most people are going to own a multi-purpose (personal) ship, one that has ftl capability, a decent sized cargo hold, some weapons, atmospace flight, etc. (to what balance depends on the player)
It is more common for orgs to have the specialised vessels, like pure combat vessels, carriers, mining barges, cargo haulers, troop transports etc. because they have the resources to field multiple ships at once, and the variety of ships complement each other (a carrier is useless if there is only one pilot). I imagine that BOO (and other orgs with a relaxed structure) will field personal ships instead of structured fleet due to the nature of such orgs.

Hello everyone, this is Shockeray, GM of Soul Nebula.

After waiting for an updated version of the original community map to show itself on the forums for a long time, I finally took it on myself to create my own up-to-date version. After a lot of original set up, my method now requires little time and almost non-existent server strain, allowing me to refresh it many times a day if there ever was a reason to. Due to my limited knowledge of this type of undertaking, TheGreatSardini helped me with the start up. Unless I missed one, this map should contain every organization with at least two members.
(Although Graph Commons may not be the best available method of displaying this node map, it is the best that I have found available to the public.)

It's a sandbox MMORPG. It's as much about crafting, as it is about anything else.

Food and depletion of it, means that griefers gotta bail back to their base. It also means that an organisation within a safezone can be sieged and forced to surrender (aside from other factors, like possible renting of space within safezones).

What, should the game also have no fuel for a ship? So people can perma-camp an area 24/7 ?

You need to think those aspects as well. Having a depleting bar of hunger, only makes the game more dynamic - and adds variety in gameplays.

Just because you like crafting doesn't mean that everyone else's gameplay should be ignored. I don't give a damn about spaceship battles, I don't claim "the game is about ground combat, we don't need spaceboats".
