ShadowLordAlpha got a reaction from Kongou in What happendes when you log off?
Maybe but doing so in something like a safe zone seems more like a pain than anything else. Maybe have something like a bound bed and when in a safe zone that has a bed (or maybe beds for rent?) your character travels to that bed or area by itself when disconnected. Thats only for more RP than I normally like though as in a safe zone i would prefer if you just vanish or fade out as its safe so it really shouldn't matter. when you log back in it could be in the same place or a set area. I do think it should be similar to how you describe outside of a safe zone though maybe just not the timer till you die or at least not a short one (few days?)

    SilverLight Industries

Founded as SilverLight Research by the United Nations in 2055 as a way to pool the research capabilities of many smaller companies into something that could assist with developing advanced Arkship technology, they were one of the few companies and organizations that could possibly compete with the globally powerful Nexus Corporation on a technological basis. Eventually, SilverLight expanded to include many other industries such as extraterrestrial mining and Arkship construction, assisting the U.N.’s Ark program through multiple facets of the project. However, the core project and top priority of SilverLight remained the artificial intelligence systems that would run the Arkships and assist humanity when they arrived on their new homeworld, Alioth. Soon after the last of the Arkships was completed, the U.N. shocked millions when it announced that Arkship resources were scarce, and that it would utilize an “artificial genetic selection algorithm” to decide who would live and who would perish in the oncoming apocalypse. Naturally, an uproar rose up, and riots and violent protests ravaged the streets of Earth in its last days. Recognizing that this was planned long before the Arkships’ completion, the Nexus Corporation, in cooperation with SilverLight and various other organizations, launched its own retaliation: “Project Cinderfall”. With SilverLight’s artificially intelligent algorithm development combined with Nexus Corp’s networking capabilities, Project Cinderfall circumvented the U.N.’s originally biased selection algorithm, allowing a much larger and more diverse population, including many members of SilverLight, to make it aboard the Arkships and into the rebirth of humanity in the age of Alioth.

Maybe foldable/retractable turrets could also be a possibility, so in their inactive mode they would have a low profile fit near or maybe even partially in the hull and in active mode high profile for a maximal field of fire.

The game was only recently released at E3 and hasn't been really publicly know for very long. Also while there are a few videos there is no where near the same amount that NMS and SE have. There are also a number of people just lurking and waiting for that time where they can play the game.

That's not necessarily true.  A plasma-core antimatter rocket functions by injecting small amounts of antimatter fuel into a stream of matter propellant.  Only a small portion of the propellant is annihilated; this reaction heats up the remaining propellant.  If you have a way to store antimatter long-term and you can route it through some sort of pipe relatively safely (likely with lots and lots of electromagnets) then there's no reason you couldn't regulate or shut off the antimatter flow at any time by manipulating those magnets.  A pure antimatter system doesn't have to operate in short bursts.  If you can't store and route antimatter then you probably can't build a working antimatter drive in the first place.

You are right about using antimatter in a fusion rocket.  There is one concept generally known as an antiproton-catalyzed fusion rocket where a few antiprotons are used to kick start a fusion reaction.  The name is slightly misleading since a catalyst, by definition, can cause a reaction by its presence but is not consumed in the process, but oh well.  This could make the reactor assembly cheaper than a pure-fusion design since you don't need quite so much compression or startup energy to get the reaction running.  This could be a sort of entry-level use of antimatter, allowing an organization with small scale antimatter production capabilities to build their fusion drives cheaper at the expense of requiring a little bit of antimatter in addition to the fusion fuel.

On a more general note there is a lot of wiggle room in these propulsion systems for the sake of ingame balance while still keeping the system itself relatively plausible.  Sure, you can talk about predicted performance values of these things, but all we have to go on without a working model are theoretical upper limits.  Without a working model we can make whatever assumptions we want about the efficiency of a given propulsion system, antimatter storage capabilities, production efficiency, etc. and tune these values with respect to game balance.  If a theoretical max antimatter drive is overpowered then set it to 50% efficient, assume that this is the best efficiency the engineers in DU were able to come up with and check the balance again.

If you plan it correctly and everyone plays nice then they could expand indefinitely. Players splitting off and taking parts of an empire with them would be really the only cause of an empire breaking up or something, possibly a war as well, but its totally up to the players and planners of an organization.

ShadowLordAlpha reacted to Archer in Spinning Chairs
Just a random idea I had a few minutes ago but it's something that might come in handy, particularly for small ships and for VR.  Usually in voxel games, particularly Space Engineers, when you sit down in a chair you're locked in place.  Your ability to interact with the environment is limited to a standardized control panel which probably involves an annoying menu interface.  The idea here is to enable players to interact with anything within arm's reach while seated in basically the same way as they would while standing.  This way you can place door controls, electrical panels, status displays, etc in voxel mode and have all of them fully usable while seated.  This would make it more practical to build compact interiors that don't generally provide enough room to move around without being limited to pre-made cockpit elements.  And yes, this also gives you the ability to spin your chair around.

So i was thinking, in many science fiction books/games/films there are always many bio-technological implants or gadgets that after one injection or augmentation are then permanent part of your body, like Infra-red camera directly to your eye so then you can see in darkness or muscle strengthening to make you jump higher etc. I thought it would be great to have at least some possibilities to do things like that in DU

I prefer the idea of having to fight over a wreck if you want to salvage it, or (my preferred gameplay style) sneaking in when nobody is around, just like in Eve.

There's always going to be the bottom feeders rushing in after a battle to try and pick apart ships after major battles

It gives an angle for pirate gameplay, and it could allow for people who want to specialize in salvaging and not combat to still get in on the action.

On the topic of towing, I'd like to see an SOS system, where you could broadcast a distress signal if your ship is disabled and any ships in the vicinity would see the signal and could choose to assist (without necessarily knowing who is broadcasting the signal).

It's not like people will be be stuck in the same place forever. There are going to be the resources necessary to refuel throughout space. So yeah, you'll need to get out there mine it, refine it, and refuel your ship. You'l probably have to return to populated space every once and a while if your an explorer but that's realistic and leads to good RP. If everybody is off doing their own thing, player interaction won't come naturally

The devs have stated multiple times that for every pressure (i.e. the benefits of player expansion), there will be a counter pressure (access to fuel, communications, markets, etc.).

    SilverLight Logistics: Optimizing Operations
Responsibility for tracking, storing, selling, transporting, and predicting resource allocation needs falls to the logistics departments. Logistics crunches the numbers to distribute resources to the construction bays and markets they need to go, maintain competitive pricing at open and private markets, and provide feedback on market trends to optimize SilverLight profits. Internal administration and strategic planning are conducted by Logistics personnel.

I would like food to be a requirement as it is a whole industry and there will always be demand for it. Woodcutting and the others will be done with the nanoformer/forge as its done in the lore that way as i remember but it is there. It also adds a whole new strategic target for war as if they have no way to grow food they can not fight.

I don't really see a problem here just destroy their stargate or hack it or whatever we can do in game (we don't really know) its a VERY heavy tactical advantage to that org and they should be fully able to do so.

as for the rest I both agree and disagree and the devs have this down already. Exploration should take time, its space its big and empty and should take time to move around even with FTL. The stargates fix this by allowing near instant travel to far away places. Within a system though I do think the time spent flying to your next location should be a bit shorter though
