I don't really get how any professional studio could fail to release a major planned feature, call it "phase 1" then go completely silent as to when "phase 2" will drop, even 2 months later.

It's no longer fair to call it 0.24 "phase 2"...it's just the next update.

So far this year, they've changed the jetpack, installed purchased textures, and added org wallets.

I think I need a new job where I don't have to spend my Sunday fixing bugs or working so much and can just do like 2-3 tiny things in 5-6 months and call it day.

I, among others, have called for this several times. I have always drawn a comparison here with the Starbase progress notes, which have appeared every Monday since September 2019. Here is the link: https://forum.starbasegame.com/forums/progress-reports.38/

Either they can' t, or they don' t want to.

    But don't give me "we're a small studio" as an excuse;
    - Factorio has given a brief glimpse of what is being worked on every Friday over its 5 years of development (The studio was only about 12 people at the time).
    Have a look: https://www.factorio.com/blog/
    - Space Engineers gave updates on its development every Thursday. (Well the bugfixes fixed something and broke something, but updates were welcome.)
Have a look here too: https://blog.marekrosa.org/

I'm pretty sure there were more studios than the 3 that did something like that. I list them here because I have played / tested all 3 games.

Yes, the NDA has destroyed quite a lot of effort in the community.
I translated the English Starbase Wiki into another language last year. But they didn't have an NDA accordingly, despite the closed alpha.
I don't see a reason why I should start for DU today, after all these years of handling it this way with the NDA.

I'm not blaming the current CMs for anything, I am blaming NQ for having abysmal community engagement and interaction.

Problem here is that the CM team is just doing what they are told to do and sticking with company policy. It is their choice to live with it and accept he job as-is, sure.

This is not about "I want blue stars". This is about members of the community spending time and effort (sometimes a lot of it) to bring suggestions and ideas to the table that would provide solutions and options to enhance and/or improve the game. And NQ then just ignoring these efforts entirely and proving it by running around and doing what the general consensus here tells them would not be a good plan.

And whenever you get a response, it is one of these five. Maybe time to start a bingo.

We can not just snap a finger and the bug is fixed (within 8 months).
It does not make sense to fix a system that has an overhaul upcoming (for the last 8 months)
We cannot comment on it or the community will expect that feature and be angry when we don’t implement it (even if the community just asks how something is currently intended)
We read everything on the forums, but it would take too long to respond. Trust us, we hear you(we just don’t act like we do).
We already have a plan (but dont tell you because reasons and just implement it first and check your response later).

It seems the CM have very very strict guidelines regarding what they are allowed to say, stricter than I have seen for other games.

Feedback is supposedly a two way, iterative process...

Had NQ shown some proactivity they could have fostered the good will of their community...

They could have picked up common repeated themes that clog the forums day after day or at least reappear month after month and created a more focussed "discuss this" channel based upon those ideas.

The top post of each idea could contain a brief executive summary of the state of play.
If the idea is quashed or to be included then a decisive final update of the first post should be written...

That way energy could be focused on constructive criticism of salient points rather than thousands of pie in the sky posts that never get looked at.

Moreover, they should have been more forthright with their refusals and rebuttals....
    "That is technically challenging because..."
"No, we won't be considering that because..."

rather than pointlessly pandering to people's egos "That's a very good idea... " or "we may look at that in the future" or "It's very far down the road..."  etc...
From a business perspective, that's a major NOPE. It fosters false hope and causes more energy to be put into shite that will never fly.

Both JC and Chris Roberts suffered greatly from this....

.. and look what happened to Star Citizen until around 2020 when Chris Roberts finally had his mouth taped shut by someone on the team (rumour has it it was Erin, his more down to earth and pragmatic brother)... and finally, SC staff can knuckle down and work on the meat and veg rather than pandering to a top level exec who has a little too much imagination and not enough self control.

SirJohn85 reacted to blundertwink in When will 0.24 phase 2 drop? Maybe never...?
My worry is that missing their goals (apparently by months) with 0.24 will make them even less willing to share deadlines and goals in the future.

We really don't have any clue what they are working on or when it will be ready -- that's kind of odd for a game, especially a subscription-based MMO in Alpha. Their "roadmap" is not helpful -- it isn't even close to a reflection of what they can actually accomplish.

So...it comes back to communication like always.

They managed to have 3 different posts about the future of DU without telling us anything about actual plans for the future! Even general goals for the rest of 2021 would be something. A revised roadmap? A monthly post about dev progress? A vague "in the next few months" sort of deal?

But they can't even tell us when 0.24 phase 2 will drop...someone is still making some questionable decisions about dev priorities and velocity and how to communicate that progress to the community (as much to keep themselves accountable and on-track as it is to keep us informed about our subscription value)

Now that JC is gone, maybe they gotta revamp the dev team leadership...something is clearly off beyond just tech debt.

A start would be regular, transparent communication. One could take a cue from the competition, which has been doing this since the announcement of the game.
In terms of content? Nothing at all. You won't be able to do anything in a month. NQ should keep its head down and work like Hello Games did with NMS. Either it's going to be something, or it's not. Otherwise there are other products if they can' t get it right.

So why do they then keep doing the same type of mistakes? Learning from past mistakes and improving is a fundamental skill that any dev team should be very aware off.

Here is the typical pattern on how NQ 'interacts' with the community.

    ---
NQ: We are going to do A.

Community: That will cause problems with B, and C and D,

    NQ: No response..

Community: Lots of speculations and frustration because there is no response.

NQ: Releases original feature patch with no regard to community feedback

Community: Generates lots of feedback, mostly about the predicted problems that are now turned into reality

    NQ: Silence...

Community: Problems are now so bad that people are starting to riot.

NQ: "Don't worry guys, we know there is a problem and we are looking into this."

NQ: Long silence, while community continues to riot and point out ways to avoid said problems

NQ: Release some quick and dirty patch that half solves the problem, and causes unplanned collateral damage

Community: Continues to point out problems with patch and quick-fix, and how they could have been avoided

NQ: Very long silence before announcing next feature, and everything starts over again..
    ---

So if people are wondering about the current state of the game and the bad mood in forums, it is because this release cycle accumulates lots of bugs and fundamental game issues over time and at the same time manages to alienate the community.

I get that they held back the mission system to fix a few things...but it's been almost 2 months since 0.24 dropped.

They seem to really like this "1 update every few months" pattern of dev.

I was thinking that things might change a bit with new leadership, but they don't want to adopt a more industry-standard pattern of development with frequent bug fixes and less frequent feature deployments.

I don't really get it. How is it even possible that the last 4-5 months could be spent on org wallets, purchased texture packs, jetpack changes, and (maybe) missions? Does that seem like nearly half a year of work to anyone...? Hell, it doesn't seem like 5 months of work even for 1 person.

Like...I'm trying to find an excuse to re-activate my sub but they just aren't eager to make changes or fixes to the game. When they do patch, there's so little of substance it's not even a month of playtime to explore.

Doubting that new leadership will change anything if the dev pace can't improve -- doesn't matter how much they plan or talk to the community if they can't actually change the game.
