    this tbh

cities don't serve any purpose whatsoever with current mechanics. except for RP purposes maybe, but noone needs special "rooms" for anything in the game right now. you don't need gathering halls, tactical command centers or anything alike. nothing a city provides serves any purpose. Same goes for spacestations. All players really need is storage and landing pads. Everything else is completely useless

    EDIT:
oh and besides the technical limitation of the single shard server - I very much doubt that cities will ever work where more than 2000 ppl concurrently do stuff within 1km of each other. lagfest ftw. see market 6

The deployment of BP is a problem I agree with you.

But to the question why there is no city?

The answer is quite simple. There is simply no point in having one in the game.

There is no mechanic that will make players live close to each other.

The only needs are storage / Factory.

Markets are NQ installations whereas it could have been up to the player to manage them for example.

Great video, but it has the exact same problem as the older "This is Dual Universe" video.
Meaning it does not represent actual game play. And anyone getting a subscription based on the video will be in for a rude awakening.

    The comparison is somewhat misleading.
You can't compare a game that should have been released in 2018 and will probably be released in 2022 with one that is over 20 years old. The pioneering work of Everquest, be it world creation, what a realm is, what groups are etc were things that didn't exist back then. The UI had no real meaning back then, even colourblind mode was a foreign concept.

NQ doesn't need to reinvent the things mentioned, like knowing what groups are, guilds are.... Heck, it's even an empty sandbox game without quests and npc.... What has NQ been doing all this time since august 2020? Not much has happened this time. Well, except for a lot of people leaving and few features coming, not really.

SirJohn85 reacted to blundertwink in Concern about the future of the game
The fact that people are still bickering about PvP in this game is hilarious.

This argument has been going on for 6+ years now.

The fact that it's still going on is proof of a fundamental design flaw that has never been solved and never will be.

Sadly, people like to turn on each other and pretend the problem is somehow with other players. It's not.

There is no issue with PvP players or concepts, and there is no issue with builders or peace-loving gamers. That's never been an issue.

6+ years of people struggling to understand what role PvP should have is a tragic example of utterly failed game design. Nothing more. I don't understand why this is hard for some gamers to understand...

I'll believe DU has a future when discussions about the merits of PvP stop, because NQ has properly designed it to everyone's satisfaction. In other words, DU doesn't have a future and frankly it never truly did.

I would like to add at this point that the tech tree was not in closed alpha, just like the easy build mode. We did not have the opportunity to give our feedback on it.
But to pick up on your initial point, that's what I've always said: The players will forgive you if you live flawless communication like the other company over 2 years and treat your players like real customers.

I gave my feedback on the translations a couple of days just before early access what people were doing and the dev in charge, who you usually never see talking in discord, spoke up. She took note, took my suggestions seriously and communicated the changes that were coming.

If I then compare this with NQ, where I commented that the org changes (as they were originally planned) would not work as they were (as an example, I took 2 people who want to collaborate together and would need a 3rd person to run this alliance), I got the answer: "It's a multiplayer game". Planned changes or that my point of view would be taken into account? Not a chance.

It then took 3 weeks to communicate that they had listened to "big" orgs and are postponing it. In the end, I feel slightly fooled. So why continue to give my input?

I would very much like to believe that, but the circumstances of Hello Games and Novaquark were quite different.
By the time Hello Games started working on NMS, they had already shipped 3 games, so it's not too much of stretch to say they have had a small, but fairly experienced team to work with. Most of the launch troubles of NMS were due to not having experience working on project of that magnitude, consequently falling behind the production schedule,  which led to having to choose between releasing what they had at the time or go bust.

In Novaquark's case it's a team that has never realeased a commercial title, led by someone who had no experience making any game indie, hobbyst or commercial.  To make things even more complicated, they decided to license a rather obscure game engine with no proven track record, besides a few simulations and couple of obscure games that have not even been released at the time.  Add a rather play it by the ear approach to design, NQ setup really has Sisyphean quality to it.

If you think about it, with the way they stacked their own deck, it's quite a miracle NQ managed to release anything at all.  Like quite a few of you i did enjoy DU for a while but at some point i realized DU really is as wide as an ocean and as shallow as a pond. And it's hard for me to see it changing with NQ's  unique talent of spending incomprehensible large share of their time digging themselves out of countless holes, instead of spending a little extra time on avoiding jumping into those very holes in the first place.

Exactly. After the so called "testing and feedback" stage in pre and alpha where I and other players submitted countless rapports on bugs and issues, only to be completely ignored. My motivation to spend time trying to "help" NQ with bug rapports is literally zero. You reap what you sow and all that..

False, misleading adverts Shitty launch with previous feedback ingored Lack of mechanics/content Carebear paradise with overdone SZ M15 cringy NQ reaction Endless, industrial scale exploits, ruining economy 0.23  Schematics scandal Naunet left and it left sour taste over NQ happenings Basicly no progress for half of year Bad comms achieve peak JC cowardly flight and overall decline of morale SB temptations 4) Derelict stubborn survivors and brave new noobs (any hope?)

As a software engineer, imagine a 6-7 year old codebase where senior devs had no idea what they were building because the design was never crystalized.

Then imagine your boss has never worked in the industry before -- literally has no concept of how games are made, but has very firm ideas about what DU is. Every meeting turns into a rant about the metaverse and Ready Player One.

Someone asks about how all this will scale. Crickets. Someone wants to know exactly how PvP will work. More crickets. Someone wonders about the 6-7 year timeline to not even get to a beta stage...they probably leave the company. LinkedIn shows that they don't have many (maybe 1 or 2?) devs that have lasted the entire 7+ years DU has been in development.

My point is that the slow velocity isn't just a question of manpower, it's a logical result of the way in which this game was developed: by an amateur with no industry experience and not enough humility to delegate the things he didn't understand.

They could hire 100 devs tomorrow and it probably would't make a difference -- there's no simple way to unravel 6+ years of complete mess beyond re-writing the whole damn thing, which is just not feasible.

I think everyone that's worked in software can see how there's issues here, but IMO it doesn't really matter if NQ has 1, 10, or 100 developers because the codebase is such a cluster it wouldn't matter.

Also, good luck finding 100 skilled Unigen2 devs. I doubt there's 100 skilled Unigen2 devs on the planet...no one has released a large game like this using this game engine, so any dev you hire has to start out learning the engine...so they have a bunch of engineering overhead as if it were a custom engine without any of the benefits.
