From what I undestand Beta is being treated essentially as a soft-launch so a wipe is not expected for the Official Release and whatever you create will remain in some form or fashion.

Novaquark has stated they are planning an upgrade to the planet after Beta that may require some constructs to be removed, but they will be returned to you in the form of "magic blueprints" with everything included and will allow you to respawn your constructs as soon as the server is restarted.

So there's a difference between the Kickstarter Founder Packs and the Alpha Supporter Packs. Bronze Founders unfortunately do not receive Beta Keys.

Xugo got a reaction from Megaddd in Subscription Question
No, you are right in that for new players who did not purchase any of the pledge packs, their game time starts ticking with the purchase of these subscription.

For your question though, I believe they gave their short blurb on the page where you purchase the subscription, but they've also recorded their response in a Q&A as well. Basically, it's a combination of their need for funding to support additional players on the servers and also so that there is (albeit obviously not foolproof) a layer of screening against players that may come into the game simply to grief.

    Reference:

One consolation is that Beta is also intended as a soft-launch and a reset/wipe is not expected for the Official Release and whatever you create will remain in some form or fashion. So despite the "beta quality release" it isn't for naught and also puts emphasis on why they would want that additional layer of screening.

All said, the labeling as Beta is intentional in terms of framing expectations and if you'd prefer to play an officially released and polished game, it may be better to hold off.

No, in fact Novaquark has stated they will end Alpha pledge packs a couple weeks before the start of Beta.
If you're only concerned with Beta then whether it is cheaper or not will depend on how long Beta lasts. A pledge will guarantee full access to Beta while purchasing Beta subscriptions will be by the month, in increments of three.

If, for example, Beta lasts 6 months then subscription would cost $38.45 versus a $60 pledge that would give you an extra Beta key and three DACs.
Judging from the latest Release Roadmap which states Beta is expected to run from "Summer 2020 to Early 2021" I'd say it's likely it'll be at least 6 months before Official Release.

Nope. Regardless of whether you purchase the pledge or buy Beta subscriptions, neither will consume DACs. DACs will only be used at Official Release.

Xugo got a reaction from Istanicas in Contributor pack questions
    Contributor Pack grants you:
Alpha Access - And any testing phase that follows Alpha 3 Dual Access Coupons (DAC) - Each DAC equals 1 month of subscription* So to answer your questions directly:
How long can I play for free? All of Alpha + Beta (August 27, 2020 - ?) + 3 months* of Official Release, assuming you use the DACs What will be the first month i have to pay? Fourth month into Official Release at the earliest (Maybe sometime in 2021)
    * The final price of subscription is lower than originally projected when the support packs were created. As such, DU has stated they would adjust the amount of DACs granted from these packs accordingly. So you will likely receive more than 3 month's worth of DACs once we hit Official Release.

I had the pleasure to talk to JC for about one hour at gamescom. Here are some hopefully new informations I can remember:
JC dont know when the Alpha is ready but it is going to happen in 2018 The Market-Feature is going to be implemented in the first update for the alpha (some weeks after the alpha launch) They havent done much yet to prevent hackers To prevent glitching when standing on moving objects (like space engineers or GTA) they give every construct their own relative coordinate system, called Local-Frame, which the player is bounded to. To detect which Frame is the right one (e.g. jumping from a ship to a planet) they send a ray downwards and the ray detects the Frame underneath the player. Right now only the skybox is rotating, but planet rotation is planned for the future On Tuesday, August 22, Novaquark has implemented a sitting function for the couch (not a joke!) They are hiring several new people starting in september, including a webdeveloper, who is going to work for the first 4 month on the community portal full-time JC itself has written the LUA-Scripting, flight-mechanics, logical-gates and the HTML/SVG Screenunit The Community Managers are really happy seeing such a growing community and that much interest in the game Most of the people at novaquark are playing the game mosty at work, not very often at home You can freely reskin the entire UI of the game, the whole UI is made up of HTML and CSS, NQ wont prevent making changes to the ui Right now, you can embed any HTML-content, except for Javascripts, in the Screen-Unit, e.g. embedding a Youtube-Video works right now, they arent sure, if they continue to allow that The client and the server are written in C++. The client needs C++ for the performance, the server is also written in C++ due to the high amount of the same code with the client. They wished, they could make it in a safer language like Java, but htey simply doesnt have the time to write a lot of code twice. Traveling to other planets takes in average 2 days, to other solar systems 2 weeks When the player has a limited internet-connection, they lower the refresh-rate of constructs and players When the player has a slow computer, they are limiting the viewing distance and also lowering the refresh-rate of constructs and players The goal is to reach 30fps on every mid-sized pc Thats all for now, sorry for my bad english and some typing errors

The DU gameplay at Gamescom was really amazing. I learned so many new things from talking to JC and actually playing the game that I would like to share them with you.
I’m very surprised no one else started a topic about the Gamescom jet, as there were people who spend much more time at the NQ booth then me…

Disclamer: None of this information is official! It’s just my interpretation of the conversation I had with JC. Also none of the features are final! I got the impression that a lot of details are not fully thought out and will be changed during development.

I hope we can freely discuss features “as seen in the Gamescom” without violating any pre-alpha NDA… I just think this will be interesting for those who were not there.

    Orbital mechanics:
In space there are actual physics calculations like in Kerbal Space Program! I managed to catapult my ship into orbit with atmospheric engines, but it was pulled back in a parabolic curve by the gravity.
JC said that atmospheric engines are actually a bit overpowered, as you could reach escape velocity with them and fly straight into space… without any control… because the engines only work in atmosphere… xD
I have to say that I really liked the atmospheric flight mechanics; they felt very realistic just like a real airplane.

    Damaging system:
Functional parts get damaged on impact and are supposed to lose their function until they get repaired by hand. (currently tweaked as it’s a little bugy)

    Lua Scripting:
We already know about the minigames you can create in DU, but what about the multiplayer capabilities? Interestingly enough it’s already possible to connect multiple programming units together by just using global variables, which are shared inside one core unit.
Thereby multiple sup-components on a big ship can be interconnected and exchange information between each other.
In theory it could also be possible to communicate to another construct using the same mechanic, but with a growing distance the update rate of the data would be decrease…
They are thinking about creating a component that can be accessed “globally” by any programming unit in range… but the whole topic about distributed systems will be another milestone that has not been considered jet.
Another thing I asked was if we could use an external IDE for programming, as the ingame one was kind of limited… JC said in theory you could import an external library in the ingame interface, which should access the Lua scripts directly from your PCs hard drive.(not sure about the Lua limitations inside DU though)
Or you just copy the code over to the game for testing.
The Lua development is also tied to the ingame IDE as each connected component actually provides predefined event-function-blocks that are triggered by certain events (e.g. a switch has an on, and an off block) and you have to place Lua code in the corresponding function blocks.
I’m sure in the long run NQ will develop a fully fledged IDE for the game, so this will become no issue at all….
The breakout minigame was also simply some code executed in the “start” function that was able to receive keyboard inputs and generated svgs that were displayed on the screen-unit.

    Rendering/Performance:
Ok, the game is not the prettiest rendering wise.
All vegetation and functional components get only rendered up to a certain distance (few 100 meters) than they get de-spawned. Also all lighting and shadows are only active up to this distance.
Further away voxels also get simplified a lot… I honestly don’t care about the visuals that much, but I’ll admit the space station looked kind of squashed from far away.  But JC said they are working hard on improving the rendering.
On the flip side flying around was very smooth! In god-mode I flew to the moon of Alioth in 2 seconds without any noticeable frame drops!

So, that’s all that was new/interesting about the game for me. Maybe most of this was already known, but it wouldn’t hurt to share it here…
I actually did not have enough time to cover all my questions. But others are probably able to share a lot more insights from Gamescom, so feel free to post them to the rest of the community!

In the spirit of transparency, was there any mention of why the official Alpha was postponed? Or, I guess more specifically, why they are behind their original planned schedule?

The post mentioned some items aren't completed that were needed for a true Alpha release, but didn't seem to say why those items haven't been completed. Did feature developments take longer than anticipated, things broke and not enough time for fixing was allocated, limited staff put them behind schedule?

I agree with you guys are saying. I didn't expect much more from alpha, the only thing that I am disappointing about is the lack of 24/7 availability which will make it harder to fit into a standard working schedule. I am glad they thy have decided to have a stand in for the alpha instead of just moving it back several move weeks or months. It would be for the best to make sure that certain gameplay elements are available before the Alpha 1 is started (hopefully some early form of groups at least).
EDIT: But it still is a postponement, imo. Alpha 1 is being moved back regardless of what they are replacing it with. (I am not saying I'm disappointed with what we are getting through the pre-alpha, it just doesn't change the fact that the alpha is being moved back.)

    Hi everyone,

On one hand, it's true that some words may have been indeed confusing in the press release from last week.
On the other hand, seeing some community/press websites not just stating the facts but starting to make assumptions without attempting to contact the studio (to check or ask for clarification) causes unnecessary troubles. It doesn't seem to be of any concern for the said websites but this is how the world works nowadays and we have to deal with it.

Update 14/08/2017 6.30 pm (Paris hour):
A JeuxOnline representative just contacted us to have some clarification about the unclear statement in the Press Release so the confusion should be cleared up soon.

    So to be clear:
We still plan to give to Gold Founder backers (and above) and the ATV group access to our most recent stable version of the game (which will be - of course - still work in progress and far from being feature complete) at the end of September 2017.

We apologize for the confusion that this Press Release may have generated among the community.

P.S: the delivery date on the Kickstarter page has never changed (and can't be changed once a Kickstarter campaign is finished). December 2018 has always referred to the Official Release and the physical reward delivery. It has never referred to the Alpha release.

    Best Regards,
    Nyzaltar.

Xugo reacted to yamamushi in An API for Skills
This is more of a request than an "idea" because I think they're going to add an API at some point it just doesn't really have a high priority at the moment.

I think it would be a good idea to have a simple API launched alongside the skill system when implemented during Alpha or Beta so that we can start working on skill management tools before the launch of the game.

Maybe I'm just cherry-picking here, but I think that having skill training tools readily available to new players at launch will drastically help improve the new player experience.

Since the skill system is going to be time-based like Eve, I think it's fair to use Eve as an example here. I think that the majority of Eve players use some type of skill management system, whether through their phones or desktops, so they can keep track of things while they're away from the game. It's much more convenient than setting alarms for when your skills are about to be complete.

I don't think it needs to be a fully featured crazy API, but just something that we can use to list skills, a skill queue (if that's going to be a thing), and a current skill in training.

Otherwise, there are some of us that will probably still be working on skill training tools if there's no API to use, it's just going to be a bit tougher on the users to set up.

I know some people want to go further and have an API for managing characters, and interacting with all sorts of things that have to do with the game, but I think the single most needed feature to do with an API would be the ability to track skills.

    No problem!

This is your motherboard, right? Between the two options, I think it would be best to go with the one 1070 if you're concerned purely with game performance since it doesn't seem like your motherboard supports SLI.

But maybe others can chime in. Zero personal experience using multiple GPUs so wouldn't be able to tell you how noticeable the change in performance would be.

Xugo got a reaction from Kuritho in What should I do to upgrade my PC? (For Alpha)
Without getting into the technical details, PCI is essentially a type of slot/slot standard. PCI-E is an improved version.
Within PCI-E there yet further different versions, with the newer ones typically allowing for better performance.

For your GPU to work at full capacity, or sometimes at all, it needs to fit and be compatible with the slots your motherboard has. Your GPU should tell you what types of slot it needs, and your motherboard should tell you what types of slots it has. If all else fails, throw your build into pcpartpicker.com and it should tell you whether or not everything is compatible.

Have you heard of the site called slickdeals? If you aren't in a total rush I would recommend creating an alert for that GPU, along with the 1060's and 1080's. Just two weeks ago the community found 1080s for that price on ebay (brand new), but the offer is expired now.
But in general new reasonably priced GPUs may be hard to obtain at the moment with the whole cryptocurrency craze... New model releases, as BliitzTheFox mentioned, may help.

For the reason stated above, I would be wary of buying used GPUs. The ones used for mining cryptocurrency will have significantly more wear than those with normal use.
