Pretty sure that Aphelia is intended to act as a tutorial.

The Alpha Team will be acting as a model. Not quite the same as a tutorial, but, the Alpha Team will be working out how to build cities and how to guide newbies into guided gameplay.
Organizations should want newbies to help complete specific objectives.
I suppose the challenge for the devs will be designing kills in such a fashion that newbie skills retain value.

Incompatibility with European key board unicode and American html that the site uses. Some text editors in word processors do apostrophes differently based on language settings. Blame planet microsoft. There is a European and American system and if the word processor is set to one and the browser is set to the other the  appears.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Specials_(Unicode_block)#Replacement_character

NQ-Nyzaltar can fix it manually but that's no fun. Setting all the computers to the same font would be a pest because this is occurring because the french ' is not the same unicode as the English ' used on this site. In french the ' has extra functions; they need those functions.  It's a European key board setting problem. It might be fixable by using a word processor setting or using open office text writer instead of the microsoft version.

Actually as a reality check - that's a really good point.

What will the terrain around the Ark look like when we emerge. Or, to put it another way...

This is the size of the crater left by something hitting the Earth at great velocity or a lot of mass. Something like an Arkship for instance. See that tiny speck in the middle there?

That's an entire abandoned mining complex. Person cutout shown for scale.

    So thoughts:

    a) the "safe-zone" will be the crater. (There will have to be a crater. Can't see how there couldn't be a real impact site)

the starting area will likely be devoid of all life, plant or animal - a true sandbox. Mineral resources will likely be easily obtainable without much mining? (potentially including alloys etc - material created in during the impact event itself), and we'll likely carry seed stock etc on the ship to get food started. But beyond that... /shrug.

    Great topic btw.

Personally, I'm in the boat of a 50/50 type player.

Solo play needs to be supported, simply because friends are not always online, so in order to keep people in the game, solo play must be feasible. If it is feasible, then some players will choose to do it. That's their right, and it doesn't really negatively impact me, so they're welcome to it.

That being said, if I've learned anything from playing EvE online (the only other big sandbox game with truly emergent gameplay), it's that playing with a group completely changes the game and makes it so much more fun. I think that everyone intending to play the game solo should seriously consider at least giving one of these organizations a shot, because there is such a difference in the stories, politics, and fights that are just simply not attainable while playing solo.

That said, I'll play solo some both because I'll be on when friends aren't, and sometimes I just like the idea of solo roaming combat (did it for a long time in eve, both in low sec and null sec.)

I think there will be plenty of emergent solo missions that can be done in the interest of the players organization. This includes mining, exploration, cargo hauling, and security patrols, which  can all conceivably be done alone, while still helping out the players organization. So that doesn't completely devalue the game as an MMO because it is still dependent on interaction with other players.

One man factions do seem like a bad strategy however because there will always be strength in numbers.

For me, it depends on my mood, sometimes I just want to do thing for myself, and other times i want to play with other players as some of you said, it also depends on what kind of people you are sorrounded with and how you get along. If you meet someone with whom you feel like doing crazy stuff, then do it, and in another time you might just want to work on your house or ship or something without anyone bothering you

I like to be solo when I need and require freedom of action. I also enjoy being in a group for the fun, sharing experiences and building large scale projects.

Now I've got to find the organization to get started with here !

DU has alien ruins - we can expect to encounter citizens of those alien civilizations at some point.
We won't have any NPCs at Alpha. But, expect intelligent NPCs to be encountered at some point - may take a year or two.

PvE will literally be playing against the environment for the most part - that won't necessarily entail fighting animals.
It's not really that PvE is another form of PvP, rather it will be that PvP will be split between direct PvP combat and indirect PvP conflict.
Conflict doen't necessarily entail fighting - may not even entail competition.
And it will be possible to become remote hermits who encounter no player competition at all.

COPS had our 60th member join today! I don't think anyone of us thought COPS would become so attractive to people, but thank you very much to everyone who believes in us, who likes our message, who wants to be part of creating our piece of (pirate) civilization in Dual when the time comes, and who supports us going forwards.

    Thank you all.

GrayStillPlays for conducting a good interview and asking the questions the community wanted .... and the community for giving their opinion or expressing what they wanted to know.

It fed my Dual Universe appetite for at least a few days I hope ... lol

Much of it have been written about in dev blogs and the ask us anything thread but it is always good to hear the top man in his own words describing the vision of the game.

So I just wanted to say kudos and thanks as well as let people know who may not have heard the interview and are interested.

Dygz_Briarthorn reacted to Unassailable in Ship Titles/Classes
I think people should be able to make so many different kinds of ships that classes will be very general. We'll know what a fighter is, or a Frigate or a Cruiser, but that will be determined and popularized by players, and honestly... a lot of ships won't fit inside those roles. After someone makes a Destroyer, which is to a Cruiser what a Cruiser is to a Frigate, someone's going to make a super-Destroyer, what will we classify the 'deathstar' as? What's a Destroyer that's used as a mobile habitat and has no weapons? Do Carrier ships have different classes based on their size? What about modular designs? What about Voltron? What class of ship is that?

No, seriously guys, I'm making Voltron. Holla at your boy.

    Interesting idea.
I'm thinking more along the lines of Star Trek and Battlestar Gallactica.

I think of myself as Chaotic Good in real life - with the example given in D&D being Robin Hood.
One of the key elements of Chaotic is having an aversion to rules/order/law. One of the key elements of Good is high regard for life.
I typically avoid joining groups that list rules.

I joined COPS because I know Kiklix from Landmark, I've always admired his spaceship designs and I'm looking forward to funneling resources his way to help him create some cool ships in DU.
I'm thrilled to see so many people I know from Landmark here in the forums and glad several of them are joining or allying with COPS.
(The only person from the Landmark forums I don't consider a friend is Thrasy).

Labels aside, I'm pleasantly surprised to see our values aligned...
Freedom fighter, lone wolf, play by own rules...
I expect to subvert the economy by handing out a bunch of free stuff (my experience is that players are generally greedy when it comes to setting prices)
Traveling on a multi-crew ship with the members we have seems like it will be a lot of fun.

    You are misinformed, my friend.
Yes, it is possible to interact with 50+ other players - if you end up in the same place.
The likely hood of bumping into another player is low. 18 quintillion planets in the universe.
We all start in the same galaxy, but that's still billions of planets in a galaxy and only a few hundred thousand players.
Even if we randomly end up on the same planet, we may not realize it.
But, it should be easier to coordinate reaching the same planet once we reach the center. And once we are in proximity we will automatically join the same "lobby" and be able to play with each other.

It's not exactly like the solo play in Elite Dangerous if ED doesn't allow multiplayer.
NMS doesn't really want 100s of players playing in the same space. They especially don't want 1K players playing in the same space.
It's best not to think of NMS as a multiplayer game because the chances of finding other players is quite low.
But if you do come in close enough proximity to other players, you will automatically join the same instance.

Second. Setting up turrets around the planet would be quite difficult if wireless energy transmission is impossible. Perhaps on Space Statios acting as Watchtowers, with a huge enough supply of power to keep a large cannon going.

Dygz_Briarthorn got a reaction from Pantydraco in Balancing for different player types.
1: This a poor description of the solo outlook. Solo simply refers to players who don't like to rely primarily on a group to accomplish game objectives. Solo players may -and often do- enjoy communicating with and interacting with other players.
Soloers are especially unlikely to join a group for combat purposes.

The segregation we will have will rely on Arkification.
We start the game in an area that is immune to PvP combat - and players will have opportunities to create more areas that are immune to PvP combat.
That allows the possibility for everyone to migrate to areas of interest according to their mood. And also motivates players to actively support their interests - either by creating or protecting safe zones or by taking control of safe zones.

Solo vs group will occur organically since players can create their own content and decide for themselves whether their goals can be achieved solo or with a group.
I'm not really sure what "group abuse" means, but individual players can create their own safe havens from groups - whether that's an underground lair, a stealth scout ship or a personal lab on a multi-crew ship.
