  1. Translation: Maybe we can recreate Jita when the game comes out so we can all go and gank everyone.
  2. If you do go with volunteer moderators, I implore you to keep it real. Every forum I have been to has been moderated by well meaning, well-intentioned individuals, except Star Citizen. Never ever had a problem outside of SC and it is clear their policy emphasizes hype over honesty and cautious optimism. And this is done by employing moderators, in many cases rabid fanboys, who are far from objective. As long as opinions are honest, polite and respectful, there is no reason why supporters should be targeted. Also detail information, updates can go a long way in promoting positive feedback - keeping supporters in the dark has the opposite effect
  3. Could be done in game like the racing course in Battlescape. Chopping it up like Star Citizen would be a mistake.
  4. SC racing was cool at first but really got boring fast. What they should have done was an asteroid field, preferably with moving asteroids, NOW THAT WOULD FOREVER BE CHALLENGING! https://youtu.be/KvJDItC6tE0?t=1m54s
  5. Not really big on RP myself. Personally I prefer social mechanics. Besides, no matter which RP I play, I end up playing the moran. Probably because I am one.
  6. Bit older? Oh yeah? In my day Pac Man was high tech and all the rage. Happy another oldy has joined DU. Maybe we can build an old folks home together for retired space pilots.
  7. Cool. Yeah, the only thing I can think of is having a few DEVs introduce first footage on youtube or stream it, but I am sure they already have that lined up. Other than that I can't really think of anything now but when footage comes out I'm sure the forums will be buzzing and supporters will be discussing DU on youtube and other media outlets - sure some ideas will pop up for promoting DU. When the time comes however, I hope the DEVs take an active interest in what is being discussed and created by the community.
  8. Hi and great to have you on board.
  9. Hopefully you are talking about disappearing assets only for new players. I personally would rather they be permanent even for new players and if they do leave the game or don't log on to insure its long term survival, then perhaps players could recycle and/or sell the assets once classified as abandoned - or when shields protecting the facility fail from neglect. I think it would be pretty cool if we created a whole new class of players - we could even call them 'Ravagers'.
  10. Nice to meet you. I'm also new and a space game enthusiast. Very exciting.
  11. I have to say, as a fellow EVEer, CCP really screwed up on not having multi-crew and when they gave up on station interaction with other players and shafted PC players with DUST (though now is, was, available on PC), their legacy was sealed. Now they are desperately trying to keep players with shiny new stations, valkyrie and a fps shooter - all separated from the EVE universe. Sadly, CCP took the easy route and simply wanted to stick with their old engine whatever the cost but now the writing is on the wall as more and more are switching to procedural and one single universe with the ability to land on planets. And in DU's case not only land on planets but build on them! So very exciting stuff yet CCP......wait what were we talking about. Oh yeah > welcome.
  12. I would check out all the Youtube reviews, and there are a ton of them, because you can make your own judgement whether they are being objective or not.
  13. Was thinking the same thing but it would have to be done with at least some oversight by the DEVs. But yeah, someone from the community could assume that role. Also I hope at least one of the Alpha testers are good at making videos because this would go a long way in promoting DU - that is if DU permits video footage of alpha.
  14. I would focus on promotion the first day footage is released. But I think what is critical to long term consistent community support is having a DEV assume the role of community/PR manager. Roles would entail providing support and encouragement to community members who promote DU; including all the things Gerald-Deemer mentioned but also info and recognition for player generated content.
  15. I have been waiting to see which one would offer the best features, visuals and options. So far they are pretty close but after seeing numerous reviews I have to say Vive is most appealing. Also it has an edge for those who wear glasses as well so I'm definitely leaning towards it. Also I believe Steam is focusing on Vive, but I could be wrong there....but I do hope DU features Vive.
  16. I have to agree with TheSlaxx....too ambiguous. With the 'something' in there it's like making a decision on half a name.
  17. I like what you are saying but my understanding is there will be millions of star systems to colonize, mine and fight over, but if there is no one there then DU becomes for the most part co-op mode or a single player experience, much like Elite Dangerous is now outside a small sliver of space. So I would have to ask why make the galaxy so big in the first place if there are so many assets in the interstellar regions? Not that I don't mind the concept of heading out into the void and finding a secluded planet/and or moon to build on (I plan to do exactly that) but it would be nice if I had the occasional passerby, even if it meant fending them off. But this scenario becomes much less likely if there is plenty of content between systems - why bother to colonize the galaxy when everything you need is within reach? Anyway, love the idea but think it would work better on much smaller scale, maybe 1000 systems as opposed to millions.
  18. Nice to have you. I'm new too and dabbled in ED.
  19. I noticed on the Unigine Website plenty of videos with water. Under water however is probably a whole different animal (amphibian?). Not being a programmer though I can't really say if underwater game-play is possible in Unigine. If it is however.....I hope we don't get swallowed up: https://youtu.be/IIQVAShJzLo?t=45s
  20. At Battlescape they have the whole 9 yards: gravity, inertia, even wind. And it is great but some are insisting that ships should actually be aerodynamic as opposed to look aerodynamic. But this would require building an in-game wind tunnel which, in my opinion, is complete overkill. Maybe 5~10 years down the road when the technology has been firmly rooted but for now just having basic Newtonian physics is more than enough. Last thing a Developer needs is falling into the old Star Citizen we can do anything feature creep. It seems what you have here already is a solid foundation for development and a better concept than anything out there.
  21. My reply to Ripper touches on this but like what you are saying. Hype is a two edged sword - absolutely. I have supported two completely opposing communities: one hyped to the extreme - Star Citizen; and one that feels like Mr. Spock on Thorazine. Hopefully DU will find the middle ground.
  22. Having supported Star Citizen for years I couldn't agree more! Also honesty is the best policy. The DEVs at Battlescape give us a progress report once a week and they are totally up front; if there is a problem they explain it; if there is an issue with choosing which external application to use they go into detail; and when a patch is late they tell us why. Result: I haven't heard a peep or complaint from anyone since they starting doing this. Sure it takes a little time away from development but DEVs do get feedback from some pretty knowledgeable individuals. Of course they need to work on generating enthusiasm but that is another issue.
  23. I guess it would depend on what DU's goals are and how you define 'healthy'. Because a community can be very healthy, happy and content not producing anything beneficial and supportive of DU. Of course if DU goes this route, it may make the Kickstarter less successful. Personally I think DU, should not only support enthusiasm but encourage it once they have in-game footage - never underestimate player generated content. But they should do this by actively temping down childish rhetoric, especially when used to bait others and undermine open, honest dialogue.
