I think most of us have experienced that. Theres some simple tips and tricks. But this is non NDA. I suggust getting on discord. Its easier and many of us there wont mind helping out new people.

Welcome, I am not sure how much of the Dev blogs you have read to get an understanding of the overall game.

While RPing is expected, and can take many forms, but I dont think you will get this. I'm sure for flat out harrassment there will be some sort of system in place, but I hope the take Eves viewpoint an are passive about most thing. I am sick of these games that cater to the 12 year old and must create a 'safe space' for evey time they get but hurt from something.
If I cant attack someone just because they are RPing a scenario, then I would just always be RPing a scenario where no one kills me. Or maybe I was roleplaying a scenario where I attacked your escort, whos RP takes precedence then? The game will be a single persistent universe, meaning everyone is present in one world. While you can create what ever scenario you wish and RP it as you choose, you cannot expect others to follow along with it. Unless you have the military might to stop them, others can and will kill you or blow up your ships.

Now there will be the pvp free zone around the Ark, here you will at least be free from someone killing you and blowing up your stuff.

I can quickly sum up how I feel about this.

    NO.

Absolutely not, it will ruin the game. They are trying to make a game with no limits no bounds, just a physics engine, and with 1 implementation you will hinder that. Dont tell me I can build a 3km ship but limits the number of elements on it, thats absurd and unrealistic in reality. If I have a space for it why cant I drop in another battery pack. Need more thrusters, yet I can only install 6. Absurd.

Sure limit me by power or fuel. I can overcome those if I deem it worth it. Thats what will limit your ship sizes. More units means more power and more control, ontop of more mass and space required, in turn requiring more fuel from thrusters. It is the one feature I hated about Planet Explorers. It had a similar build system to what DU is going for, but it was limited. I could stack 4 rotors ontop eachother no problem, but couldnt put more than  ~6 battery packs for energy.

Arbitrary limits like that hinder what you can creativly do, not just functionally. Besides, with massive multi crewed ships you need the freedom. Why have a specialized carrier or a dreadnought if you're gunna limit things like turrets and docking spaces.

DevisDevine reacted to yamamushi in Random Info I Learned From PAX
I feel like a broken record going over these things over and over, so instead, I thought I'd just write up some of the more interesting things I learned at PAX this week.

Now, I certainly am not at liberty to discuss everything I learned from PAX. It's also worth pointing out that many of these things are likely subject to change:

Ships have 3rd person view (at least in pre-alpha).  We may see more complex forms of linking elements, aside from Lua/power/fuel (no promises, and not going into details, but fingers crossed regardless) "One Week" means "One Week"   The number of TCU's we get in pre-alpha will probably be limited to 3-4, or thereabouts. Much smaller than the several thousand available to players at PAX. Ship combat will not be automated. If you see a ship with 30 cannons on it, it's likely there are 30 people onboard manning those cannons.  Avatar combat may have some automation in the form of simple base defenses that fire on people who aren't allowed in your territory. The game will be roughly a 10gb download, and those with pre-alpha will likely get a day or so to pre-download it. Flying in the first-person mode is much easier to get used to rather than 3rd person mode.  Celestial bodies like Asteroids cannot be moved, which is to say that attaching several rocket boosters to an asteroid won't just make it start moving. Asteroids will be in pre-alpha The scroll wheel is currently used as a speed throttle in ships, which takes a little bit to get used to. Fingers crossed that this changes, as it's a bit weird. Atmospheric and Space thrusters are two separate items. Just because a ship can fly in the atmosphere doesn't mean it can fly in space.  In the same vein, Atmos and Space fuel are two separate things.  Star probes will not be physical things flying through space, so no tracking them down to destroy them as they fly through space.  A question came up about how far they are along with the skill system, the answer is "almost zero". They're just not at that point in development yet, which is understandable. Digging to the center of a planet should result in players bouncing around like a spring around the absolute core. However, we'll have to test this to see if it actually works.  Of course the closer you dig the center, the harder it will be to reach because of the way that territories stretch all the way to the core.  Planets were not rotating in the PAX Demo, unclear if this will change in pre-alpha on the 30th or if that's planned for Alpha instead. Coming up with crafting recipes is difficult because of the balancing required for them.  Making ships is not going to be easy, people are seriously underestimating just how difficult it's going to be to get into space. Even in creative mode people had a very hard time doing it.  Water is extremely difficult to get right. The water in the pre-alpha is just a placeholder texture for now, and their plans for water sound awesome, it's just not an easy task at all.

I'm sure I'll have more info to add to this thread as I remember it over the course of the day.

As for my thoughts on how the pre-alpha played at PAX....

Many people who didn't know anything about Dual Universe sat down to play it and were kind of left dumbfounded as to what to do. The open world aspect of it without any tutorial was a bit overwhelming, and people were left clicking random buttons and walking away confused. Those that did understand Dual Universe, however, seemed to have a blast playing around in the world. Despite complaints I've seen to the contrary, I didn't find the UI to be overly complex or confusing. Just looking at screenshots is pretty self-explanatory. It takes a few minutes to get the hang of things, and there are certainly some terms you should be aware of, but it certainly wasn't this monstrously complex thing that warranted the complaints I've seen. On the topic of building ships. Many people sat down expecting to just have their hands held building a ship. It's not easy at all, which I think is a good thing. If it was such a simple process that any random person could do it in 5 minutes, it would be a whole lot less impressive to actually build one that works. I am happy with the way this works out. Not everyone is going to be able to build a space ship. The game played rather fluidly. There were some trivial bugs here and there, but nothing that brought down the server (which is the key point here).  Again, building a ship is not a process that someone can just explain to you in 5 minutes. If you're expecting to just jump into the pre-alpha right away and be flying off the planet in a few minutes the first time, it's not going to happen.

Overall I was very pleased with what I saw at PAX, I think that anyone coming into pre-alpha with leveled expectations (not a complete game) will be very happy with how far they've come. It's going to be a very fun time for all of us. The game has a learning curve, even at this point in creative mode, so if you're expecting something where your hand is held and everything is as simple as WoW or No Man's Sky, you're going to be disappointed. I know others will disagree with me, but I found it just as easy as learning to play Everquest Landmark.

I support this. I have asked about the ability to buy DAC a few times, but never got a yes or no.  I would like to have some more DACs for in game, and for me to support at a higher tier would cost a lot.
Ive considered pledging under a new name, but thats giving me another game access I dont need.

No, I am not sure if NQ will go for buyi g alpha for another, certainly not stage 1. While you may intend to give it to someone who cares, others wont always do the same.  But I would think beta wouldnt be a problem.

I don't know how everyone else feels about this, but I would like the ability to start purchasing DAC's now to help with the fundraising.

I'm one of the people who has a high pledge already (Boosted Emerald) and so going to the next level will set me back ~$4000.

Instead of doing that, or having to open a second account to pledge, I think it would be useful to be able to pledge in smaller increments by purchasing DAC's now ahead of release.

In addition to that, I would love to be able to purchase pledges to give away. I know that technically you're not "buying" Alpha access with a pledge, it's more of a perk and a thank-you for pledging at all. However, I also know there are plenty of people out there who just don't have the financial means to be able to get into Alpha but would be valuable members of the community if they could provide feedback and help to get the word out a bit more.

Opening these options up would allow me (and others in my position) to continue to help the fundraising efforts, and to also help bring more people into the community.

    tl;dr :

    - I want to be able to purchase DAC's now to help with Fundraising
    - I want to be able to purchase pledges as gifts to give away to help with Fundraising and to bring more people into the community.

In response to those with scinerios where you log back in at the ark, this is a bad idea.

Unless it acts as if you died and cleared your inventory in the same manner as death, this would be abused.

Say Im off in another system and need to trade at the ark.  I just have somone delete the construct Im on after I log and appear there. Cuts my travel time in half.

And having people kicked from a construct when ownership changes, logged off or not, is immersion breaking.  Remove their access, sure. but whatever happens to your physical body shouldnt care how permissions change.

Someway to flip a construct is needed, the nanoformer could have this function, but I havent heard it discussed.

I completly agree on merging constructs. I hate game where if you ship gets cut in half you have to rebuild it rather than merge the pieces back together.  Especially if we wont have salvaging for a while.

DevisDevine reacted to 0something0 in Mining operations. volume of matter, mechanics.
I know this is old, but people don't get what e=m(c^2) means. The equation means that for any given matter with mass, the energy contained within the mass(in kilograms) is equal to the mass multiplied by the speed of light(meters per second) squared. Some examples include:

"modifying the geometry of exotic matter could reduce the mass–energy requirements for a macroscopic space ship from the equivalent of the planet Jupiter to that of the Voyager 1 spacecraft (~700 kg)[7] or less" -From the Alcubierre Drive article on Wikipedia

This means that according to the latter estimate, it would take e= 700kg * c^2 = 6.3*10^19 joules of energy to power the Alcubierre Drive.

Another example is a hydrogen atom has a mass of 938.790 million electron-volts, which, rearranging the equation e = m(c^2) to e/(c^2) = m, gives us about 1.7*10^-27 kgs per hydrogen atom.

No, accelerating mass to the speed of light WILL NOT turn it into energy. accelerating mass to C would take an infinite amount of energy since relativistic effects go up exponentially as you get closer to the speed of light.

    ......

I think it would be nice to have a drill, not a big one, but a relatively small one that you can attach to a craft to make a drilling truck. They would be power-intensive and heavy so you can't attach like 50000 of them in one ship. Also, dynamite for blast mining would be cool too.

    ......

Personally, I think we need to focus more on space mining. A lot of sci-fi tends to focus a lot on planets, even though from a practical perspective, that is much less efficient since you have to travel in and out of large gravity wells which take a lot of energy. Besides, I imagine the largest ships will be assembled in orbit, so having the materials right next to the site in an asteroid would be more convenient. Also, by promoting space mining, it would open up planetary surfaces to other uses.

It has been said that drones wont be possible. A pilot will always be needed.

I hope however that this is just for having a ship run itself. I hope at least dumbfire missiles like this are possible and ideally ICBM type guided missiles.
