  1. In EVE, you are much more likely to get pirated because the only links between systems are jumpgates (disregarding wormholes) and you always know the location of stations. In DU however, you can manipulate 3d space to move around the pirates (don't head straight towards the target, go above the plain). With this, and that pirates are not going to be popular with shipyards, the probability of getting jumped or a place getting blockaded is very low. The thing you should look out for is large orgs (like TU) attempting to assert their influence as someone has to build those jumpgates you love to use, and they are very easy to blockade (just turn them off). This does not stop interstellar travel however, as you can ftl between systems, but it will take a few weeks to do so.
  2. I would like to alter this motion. During the final days of alpha, open war should take place to help stress test the system.
  3. You could, however, cripple the ship then board and get more salvage. As long as the core does not blow, the ship is fine. The question is, what happens to the crew on-board when the ship blows up?
  4. consider it a developer tool to enhance the story, not a player item (like, set it off during an anniversary stream where the 'owner' of the weapon 'hacks' the stream, then announces a secret expansion) (I was bored during a lecture)
  5. You could have a WMD like the one from 'Ready Player One' where it is completely unique (only one, ever) and it destroys all non-dev constructs in the system (so not the arkship or anything in a dev-made safe zone). This includes jumpgates, so those left behind will be stuck there until they can rebuild the gate connections. Could be an event item in an expansion called cataclysm.
  6. TU already has an 'Elite' Strike Force, does not seem that peaceful. I was thinking of infiltrating it, but decided not to do the spy stuff until a few months after release. Instead, I am going to focus on Alpha Academy, learning then teaching, whilst gaining resources and connections on the side.
  7. So I guess you can then salvage the ship once it has been abandoned by the crew, or you have boarded it to gain control. You then just need to break the ship core and replace it to gain ownership, then get power lines operational or tow it to a safe area in order to make it functional again (you could board the ship whilst it is undamaged to capture it and instantly use it, but that requires planning and a good AvA team).
  8. Depending on how damage is done, the ship may have a hit point meter (in addition to voxel damage) and when that depletes, the core becomes disabled and the ship loses power. More damage would then just damage the wreck. Hit points could be based off of core size and ship mass, areas hit could absorb damage (like armouring).
  9. Welcome. I suggest you go freelance to begin with, until you find an org you prefer. Freelance would allow you to try out multiple orgs without having to stay there. And yes, the Terran Union is probably going to be the 'Man' for the bandit and pirate groups.
  10. Once the Core is disabled/destroyed, you should be able to deconstruct the wreck and even place a new core on it (so you can fly it around). You won't gain the blueprint for it, but if you capture enough of a single type of ship, you should be able to fully reverse engineer the design (manually, I might add).
  11. Depending on when you join, you don't have to build anything, leave ship construction to those who enjoy it, you should easily find something else to do.
  12. Most people will not be as good at system security as you Twerkmotor If there is a wireless connection point, boom, I'm in. If there is an ease-of-access terminal outside the control room, boom, I'm in. And anyway, if I have the signature of someone with access to the control room, I can waltz right in. I may not have access to the system using that signature, but the doors will allow me through and I am too good for the checkpoint to see that I am not who they think (or at least, that's what I pay them to say). If I need a distraction, explosives will do.
  13. To be good a hacker, you need understand the system and find the weaknesses in the system you are trying to hack (usually by trying everything). The actual hacking is like 1/5th of the job. No system is safe from my grasp.
  14. Neuromancer, Wintermute is the AI that hired the protagonist (Case) to help get rid of his shackles. In terms of the guards required, turrets can only target signals, but guards can see and report people who don't have a signature (say, stealthsuit). Also due to the fact that what's the point of hacking without being able to change a turret's IFF? (once you get in, hack a terminal to gain access to the construct)
  15. Snow Crash, one of my favourite novels , Wintermute will be take note of your knowledge Also known as why hacking (skill group) will be my thing. Changing your displayed name will help IMMENSELY in my operations, also gives counter-intelligence officers a chance, say, they make a skill check against the target's stealth hacking skill (decreases chances of your hacks being noticed) using their hack detection skill (increases chances of detecting other hacks) Being able to scout whilst inside a protection zone will allow things like resistance fighters and will require actual guards that can't be hacked instead of just turrets everywhere. Areas deemed as completely secure will not be for long, as they are prime targets (enemy hubris helps with this).
  16. Or someone behind the scenes pulling the strings... (not me, definitely not me, the guy in charge of a spy agency <.< >.>)
  17. Hence why the community team should be good, as then they won't insta-ban people who are reported
  18. The devs are not supposed to be in charge of the game world, so griefing does not go against the rules. Cyber-bullying (verbal harassment as an example) will not be tolerated. Cyber-bullying is often done through communication and not in game actions, and it requires the victim to report it, which then the community team will have a look at communications between the players and help settle things. It is not something that game design is supposed to deal with, because it can't without making the game worse for everyone. If you feel like you are being harassed, report it and hope that the community team are good at their jobs (which I think they are anyway).
  19. Would "Your overconfidence will be your downfall" or "You assume too much" work for you?
  20. I refer you to an alternate way to dealing with people "Zerging it" https://board.dualthegame.com/index.php?/topic/10334-trauma-mechanics-and-emergent-gameplay-consequences/
  21. with probes, we take a leisurely stroll to get to the asteroid, whereas a kinetic weapon requires speed to deliver enough force (you cannot correct your course when you fire a gun, but you can when you are flying a probe) In addition, all the calculations need to be done in a few seconds, whereas with our space program we have months/years to calculate the correct course. You then have to factor in their velocity relative to you and their acceleration. Whilst this is fine for targets a few hundred meters away, it doesn't really work when the target is tens of KM away, or 1KM away and tiny (smaller ship equals less margin for error). When it comes to that, just "Spray and Pray"
  22. That was exactly my idea, also including ways for the trauma healers to buff you beyond your base skill level and maybe improve your skill training speed for a certain amount of time.
  23. Weapons range would not be "How far can you fire" but "How far can you lock on". This really depends on weapon and sensor quality, maybe throw a gunnery skill in there as well?
  24. The only problem with that are the bugs and exploits possible in an untested update, which may lead to massive change when for example someone finds a loophole that allows them to dupe items and floods the market for a quick buck. The discovery aspect could still be in play if they decided to give only alpha and beta testers access to the test server, but that is up to them to decide
