You should be happy to know there are Landmark devs backing Dual Universe then  (I mean to say they pledged, they're not working on the game).

Hello everyone, this is Shockeray, GM of Soul Nebula.

After waiting for an updated version of the original community map to show itself on the forums for a long time, I finally took it on myself to create my own up-to-date version. After a lot of original set up, my method now requires little time and almost non-existent server strain, allowing me to refresh it many times a day if there ever was a reason to. Due to my limited knowledge of this type of undertaking, TheGreatSardini helped me with the start up. Unless I missed one, this map should contain every organization with at least two members.
(Although Graph Commons may not be the best available method of displaying this node map, it is the best that I have found available to the public.)

And for those who can't load the page, I have attached a completely oversized screengrab below which will give you the general idea.

I think our hope is that DU becomes akin to a cult...club, in that everyone pays monthly dues so that the club can operate. People that hang out at the club all day and night pay the same dues as the weekenders. The subscription is less about cost per unit of game time, and more about being a member of the club. A $15 club membership fee isn't unheard of. Gym memberships are a good example. Pay the membership fee, get access to the gym. What you actually do with that membership is on the member.

Considering the setup of engines nothing will look exactly as IP builds, and yet because of setup you will take into account efficiency and function first of all.
Fuel consumption, how well it can handle, what's the purpose etc. There is many factors when applied, will determine almost naturally how the ships will start to look.

Remember for engineers there is no half empty/full glass. Glass is twice as big as it should be

As for the IP issue others brought up; it once was said in Ecclesiastes 1:9 (NIV)

Just be careful with the "replica" ideas.

Nobody will be any the wiser if you build a pixel-perfect copy of an X-wing in your single-player SE game.

But the moment that happens in an MMO where potentially tens of thousands of players will see it, buy and fly it, the owners of the original IP will quite likely have an issue with it.

The backer count decreased by 0.01957%
More interestingly, what was the amount they took with them /s

Seriously though.. with nearly €850K from backers it's irrelevant really.
the fact they updated the numbers in itself is more than enough with regards to NQ being transparent.

A spaceship massing 1 million tons with 500,000 tons of deuterium fuel with 1G acceleration will take 18 years subjective to reach a star 10,000 light years away.  But that would be 10,002 years objective.  It would get very close to the speed of light causing considerable time dilation.

There's going to be a large city built around the arkship just by virtue of it being a completely safe zone.  All the major organizations will keep stockpiles, R&D and civilian manufacturing facilities there, probably in skyscrapers.  Since that is where all new players spawn, that's where you'll have the main recruiting centers.  It may be that the rest of the planet is mined out but maybe by that time there'll be farming.  Maybe the planet will be covered in solar cells or fusion plants to power the city.  Those would have to be defended.  And since it will be the ultimte respawn center, organizations will want to have outposts supporting travel from the arkship city to their own power centers.  Mining will certainly move from the center outward but there will still be economic, energy collecting and military activity in the core worlds.

I don't think we're getting off on the right foot here.  I'm twice your age, so please don't call me son.  And asking if someone is braindead for making a suggestion in a thread about making suggestions is kind of rude.  I'm not being a jerk for you.

Perhaps the training system is inspired by EVE, but that could just be the starting point.  The business rules for skills training haven't even been written, so I'm pretty sure the alpha team will be in a position to make suggestions.  I've seen several organizations with mission statements that include education.  Unless that education is entirely devoted to player skills (how to build stuff, for example) then I am fairly certain that people will indeed want to apprentice to the master roboticist so they can learn how to build and repair higher tech mechs faster.  Personal interactions in order to get training create roleplaying opportunities.

I don't like the idea of training that is so passive that you don't even have to be online to train.  Uploading a skill directly to your brain is like reading and watching videos about blacksmithing and then claiming to be a master when you've never lifted a hammer.  You don't know the feel the hammer in your hand, the sound of properly tempered metal, the smell of forge, the heat on your face... there's a lot more to a skill than book knowledge.  But that's just me.  Maybe you want training to be fully automated, just plug your brain in to the ark and magic happens Demolition Man style.  That would certainly be easier to code, but it would shut the door on folks who want there to be a value in experience and effort.

So... when you're training, do you set up a queue for training?  Get all the level 1 and level 2 skills you want queued up, log off for a week and come back and you're as skilled as people who played 80 hours.  I just don't care for that.

Not really. It will though make sure the game is not full of multiboxers and bots.

It will also not overflow the servers if an idiot wanted to make a loop do 1000000000000000000000 loops a second. You might be sayng "but scripts run on the client's end", which is true, but the server has to receive those actions and register them.

Limited automation will keep the game tied to its core social interaction. You can have welders putting a ship together in your factory, or you can have machines that do it slower than them.

It's a risk to have people work for you and it's not a risk to have machines, but they have slower speeds than humans. It's a trade-off.

I believe membership in organizations and the appointment of legates are ultimately under the power of the founder, so unless the founder voluntarily shares or surrenders control, all organizations are autocracies at the moment.  And I'm sure if there are additional options made available in DU for organizational, er, organization, the founder would have to approve that transfer to a new organizational model.  Even if legates are able to accept and eject general members, I don't see any way they can do the same with other legates.

That raises the question, what happens if the founder stops playing?  If the founder fails to log in for several weeks and doesn't return messages from the other legates or members, will DU transfer control of the organization?  To whom?  What if there are no other legates?  Will organization assets be eternally frozen in their accounts?  Will the RDMS for objects managed by the organization be forever locked?

I hope that NQ has a plan to address the maintenance and inheritance requirements of organizations and provides alternative governance models.  I could imagine different models such as Monarchy, Republic, Democracy, Syndicalism, Corporation and Dictatorship having advantages and disadvantages in terms of stability, as well as the satisfaction of the membership in terms of participation in the government.  Once the RDMS is in place, we may see Republics and Democracies appearing, as well as the existence of Boards of Directors for corporations, but unless NQ wires control of the organization and its assets to the RDMS, whatever gets voted on can be rejected at the whim of the founder and the only choice members would have would be to vote with their feet.

Developing business rules for civil wars could be very interesting too, as well as regional governments at the planetary/system level, or even at the city level.  It all depends on how big things get.  I can't see one person effectively managing the affairs of a 10,000 member organization.

Pat answer - ours was the only one that hit a planet, the rest just kept going and going and going, forever ever.

(But non-pat answer - /shrug things could always change? The Aether backstory is a great example of where it's dangerously close to creating background that may not be in there (the "other" AI - Eidelon etc) because it is so damn cool and easy to use as a springboard in one's own stories).

Hi everyone!   @ghoster:   Despite how you might feel, we are not going in radio silence mode.   A few points that we want to clarify here:   - We never expected either to have a success as large as Star Citizen for many obvious reasons: we started to really communicate about the game a few months ago, we had no celebrity in our team and no big brand to put in front. That alone were legitimate reasons to keep our expectations realistic. We are already amazed to see how far we went in a such short amount of time and we are not going to stop there! - As Pang_Dread mentioned it, we communicated in the last Kickstarter update that the communication now won't be as intense as it was during the Kickstarter.  - A few things are coming soon:
    1) new forum sections will be opened on Wednesday 2nd of November 2) a newsletter for the end of the week (with some stuff that might interest more than one ) 3) a fan fiction contest that will take place from Tuesday 15th November to Thursday 15th of December! (more info very soon!)   @Anonymous:   We can understand that you are concerned about our current lack of presence. However, you should understand in return that you can't expect the same presence from a Community Manager in a big company or being a part of a big structure than one in a small company. Why? Because in small companies (like indie studios), people are generally brought to do more than the exact job written on their contract. If not, then the company might quickly run into some problems to work properly.    Just a few examples: - Apart the communication from JC, all the comm from the devs is handled by the CMs (who are doing the link between devs and the community). - Managing discussions on Facebook and Twitter is totally within the job of the CMs (it's really disturbing to say the contrary). - This might be shocking but yes, Customer Support can be something a CM has to do (and right now, this is also part of our job). - Internal, invisible tasks related to Kickstarter and hugely time consuming are also among the things we currently have to do. - Despite what you're saying, Reddit can also be an appropriate place where a CM might have to interact with people interested in the game.   All in all, we would love to interact a lot more with you guys than what we are currently doing. We will do our best to increase our presence in the coming months. A few replies are coming soon to some important topics.   Best regards, Nyzaltar.
