I couldn't help thinking about 'Starbound' there and tentacle planets, where the vegetation attacks you. That would be an interesting planet i think, you land there and the PLANTS come after you, growing at a exponential rate covering everything unless you burn them away with fire or some forcefield.

I'm thinking of two things that are like that, the 'growth' in C&C Tiberian Wars, where it had the mouth at the center and if tanks when through the 'growth' (not sure of it's name) they would take damage and die, same as if it grow towards buildings.

The other one is Creeper world, constantly flooding planets that if it gets to you, you die and you need to fend it off.

Either way, I would love a planet that attacks you and tried to stop you from colonizing it.

I was going to make a post on this myself today, but I guess I will say what I wanted here.

First off, as nora said, we dont know the exact system. From the Dev blogs and the lore I gathered that it would be a time based training system more than a grinding system, think Eve online. Now I am not certain of this, but from what I read thats what I gathered it to be. I do hope there is no class system or restrictions, so one player could eventually learn everything. I want to say this was confirmed in some dev post, but I was reading so much at the time I dont even know where to go back and confirm that.

I had an idea that when players started the could choose some start of class that they will be engaging in the most. With that you would get a bonus to learning skills under that class. It could be low (a few percent) if it were a permanent boost or something larger (maybe 25-50%) if it was a temporary boost, maybe 1 week or until xxx skillpoints). This could fit in with the lore, you were a diplomat before leaving earth so rerouting your neurons to learn those skills becomes easier. Or the same goes for whatever classes they put in. This would help players get into the game and do more very early on, boot strapping the game when it launches and helping new players catch up a bit later on down the line.
An alternative would be you just gain so many skillpoints in skills associated with that class right away. So instead of waiting a day to train you would already know mining, or ore prospecting.

As far as level requirements, I believe it was stated that as far as things like mining, you can do it at once. But as you learn skills you become better at it. And the same applies all around. Although I would assume it would take some knowledge to be able to manufacture a warp drive over what you know immediately.

If you have not I would recommend reading the dev blogs.

    Welcome friend.

So.you have a lot of experience in the space games I see, hopefully they will help you here ..

This game will be great, and hopefully greater than all other space games combined, sure looks that way at the moment.

I wouldn't worry about the language barrier and how well you do, there are already plenty of people who are not native English speakers, so if you need anything g translated I'm sure someone can help. .. or we have Google translate if needed...

I hope you enjoy your stay in DU..

To be fair, the best way to think about ships is that there are no different siE ships... there are no large or small ships, only the size you decide to make them.

If you want a shop with 100turrets on and only 20voxel blocks, go for it, if you can get it to work at least.

All ships will be player designed, every voxel and every element. You want a small hole with 20thrusters and 1 weapon.. do it.

There is nothing (so far) stopping you building whatever you want.

As for mining vessels, again, they are just a ship... same as a ship with weapons, only your put a morning drill/laser on it. Ship design is 100% the player choice ..

Welcome to DU, I like how you chose to used your first post, I think i understand some of your concerns.

Large ships will be able to be piloted by more than one crew member at a time, I'm unsure if there is a negative effect on piloting a large ship with only 1 person, but multicrew ships are there so i would imaging its more that you get a benefit if you have more people piloting, rather than you get a negative if it's only 1 person.

DU will be a single shard game, meaning that every single player who logs in will be on the same server, regardless of time-zone or player amounts. Even if every single player is in the main Arkship on Alioth, every player is still logged into the same server. Also, the game will start with all players spawning on Alioth inside a arkship, so the centre of the universe for every player is Alioth and i imagine it will always be since the arkship on alioth will be the only respawn point for a long time.

DU is a emergent gameplay game. Meaning that we, the players, decide what is Law/ Politics/ Rules/ good/ bad ect.. inside the game, we build the buildings, we build the ships, we decide what the game will be, there is nothing pre-made by the devs other than a few select categories such as elements or arkships.

FPS and ground battles i would assume will only be in the very start of the game, once a player has a ship it will be very ship based combat unless you are attacking a base/space station or trying to board someones ship. Land based vehicles (using tracks/wheels) i do not know about, unless you can create it from the tools the devs give you, as there is anti-gravity devices and thrusters as your main vehicle elements to do with transport/movement.

Ships will be small to start with and they will grow in size, but the beginning of the game will be a long process of getting into space. The devs have stated that players made not leave the planet Alioth within the first few months because of the cost of building in the beginning, obviously it gets easier as you have machines to do the mining for you. So the length of time to get off the planet i think will be just for the first people into the live game.

Research is a topic that is going to be discussed more in the future, there is a DevBlog going to be coming out about it in the future, we just don't know when.

Your English is good, I would not worry about that, If I misinterpreted something you asked please just ask again, we are people from all over the world, many not being native English speakers themselves, so if we misinterpret something, just ask us again. We will try to respond with the correct answer, and if we can't, then there is always google translate or someone who speaks the same language

Anyway.. Welcome to DU, I hope you enjoy your stay.

    My thoughts on orbital physics:

Calculating the orbit of an object, and defining the best intercept point, or calculating your apoapsis and periapsis in order to define an orbit are due to our limited access to power, velocity, and resources.

I have no need to perform these functions when I have anti-gravity units or FTL drives or reactors powerful enough to power them.

I can create a static space station with that technology. And I can fly from a moon to a planet in seconds. No need to plot an intercept point.

Id prefer the devs focus on other things besides orbital mechanics.

This would be more applicable towards large organization posts, but what I propose (for these forums) is the ability to allow editing privileges for multiple people on a single post. This facilitates easier revisions and edits for posts concerning two or more people. Mostly this would encompass recruitment/introduction posts for organizations started by multiple users, so that User 1 may start the post, add User 2 in the "Able to edit" field, so that users are able to edit a post even with the original poster offline.

The only issue occurs when two or more people are editing the same post at the same time, which could lead to interesting revisions...

As much as I would love to play around with the various aspects of DU while waiting for full release, I hope they never cut it up into bits and pieces. I would rather them focus on the game and get it done a month sooner than toss us little scraps along the way.

I agree with Saffi that there could be a whole lot of different roles for spaceship crew members, but not with his estimates of how many people will be manning said ships. From the above, they are definitely not going half way with multiplayer ship crews. A battleship, I mean real huge ship like 250+ metres (820+ft) long really would require dozens or maybe even hundreds of real players to fly at full strength.
Automation will be relatively basic. Droids will be used primarily for simple repetitive tasks.

    EDIT
There's a caveat to all that though. Players will design ships themselves. So you could build a ship the size of battleship which has limited functionality such that its full complement is just 5 players but could be piloted by even just a single player. Would this ship be able to compete with a 100 man ship of a similar size? Would you be better off with a much smaller 5 man corvette?

I'll +1 this, There have been plenty times I've seen someone go from the nicest person alive to a dictator in one fell swoop just because they were given 'some power' to do something. Happens all the time in games actually, was playing MC(Tekkit) not to long ago and a friend was given Admin rights. He went from being a nice person just making there creations in the world setting up factories to progress a little bit, to making profanities and offensive constructions right outside peoples bases because well.... he could now. He is a little childish at heart I guess, but AlexWright is right, Absolute power corrupts, if you are not capable of handling it that is.

One thing is though, if there is going to be community moderators, set out a list of rules of when and when not they should use the powers given to them as a guideline and then give them the ability to use their own common sense on top of override these guidelines if needed.

But again as Alex points out, everyone so far seems to be of a mature mind, so there shouldn't be any need for the forums to be moderated just quite yet, but always nice to put in preventative measures I guess.

Problem is, you could ask all them questions but i think Nyz is bound by the devs to not say anything that can be taken wrongly, and only give out 100% accurate information.

So the chances that anything about the gravity and transferring from planet to planet will be confirmed is low for the time being sadly .. Unless Nyz's is feel generous

Excuse me.. I prefer the term, Independent Adventurer!...

But yeah, Ripper is right, you can have a ship any size you want (when you have the materials for it of course) with as many places for people inside it as you want, but that majority of actions that will be required are presumed to be able to be scripted, if you are good enough with Lua.

I'm going to stick to the small single player ships that i can nip around and potentially breach inside bigger ships and fly around inside them.. Think episode one!

@Astro - only till the oculus touch is out. How much do you think that will increase the price by so that it can have matching controllers to the vive?.. I'd say it will have equal price then, so no arguments there.

@Slaxx - do what I did and get two camera tripods for like £5 each and hold them up that way.

Also to point out, the oculus as far as I'm aware is stationary tracking, meaning if you move out your spot it stops tracking you, the vive has a tracking area of 5m**2, with controllers and front camera and bunch of other things...
